Chapter 4
With just three days remaining until the launch of her new book, Lina took to Instagram to announce she would retire from writing on the day of the event. The following evening, Eric rushed home and
immediately asked Lina, “Honey, what did you mean by that post? Why do you want to stop writing?”
Lina let out a bitter laugh. So he did check Instagram. Had he noticed Bonnie’s provocations against her? Or was he so lenient with Bonnie that he chose to overlook them?
In recent years, several of Lina’s books had been turned into films and TV series, establishing her as a rising star in the literary world. Producers were eager to adapt her work. Quitting now would be a huge setback for her career, and even Eric recognized that.
“I just don’t want to write anymore. I’m completely worn out.”
She didn’t mention that since discovering his affair, she hadn’t been able to write a single word. The love she once cherished had plunged her into despair, making life feel unbearable. It felt as if she had lost her soul overnight, with no drive left to create.
Eric grinned and embraced her warmly, gently running his fingers through her hair.
“You gave me quite a scare. I was worried something might have happened. If you’re feeling exhausted, Honey, just take a break from writing–your husband has more than enough money to support you.”
Lina returned the smile. Indeed, with Eric’s status, he could easily provide for many women like her. However, she no longer wished to

be known as Mrs. Absom. She wanted to be Lina, her true self.
“Tomorrow is your birthday. How would you like to celebrate?”
Lina shifted the conversation. She wasn’t interested in watching Eric put on a show for her. Every year, his birthday was marked with a large gathering, and this year seemed no different.
“Andy and the others have planned a get–together. It’s the same as always, nothing new.”
Eric gazed at Lina with curiosity. There was something different about her today, though he couldn’t quite figure out what it was. Despite her gentle smile and soft words, a hint of unease lingered within him, unsure of its origin.
“Alright, celebrating with everyone will surely be festive!”
On Eric’s birthday, he still went to work as usual. Lina gave the household staff the day off. While the house was empty, she hired a moving company to donate all her useful belongings and sell the rest. In no time, half the house was emptied, and the sight of the bare rooms left Lina feeling just as empty inside.
That evening, Lina arrived at the meeting spot half an hour early. As she was about to enter, she overheard Eric speaking.
“Lina will be here tonight. Be careful with your words, everyone. If anyone mentions Bonnie, don’t blame me for not being nice.”
Andy scoffed, saying, “Eric, you’re such a jerk. You act like the perfect husband while having an affair with that mistress. Aren’t you worried Lina will eventually find out and leave you?”
Eric paused before responding, “Andy, you’re single, so you wouldn’t understand how mundane marriage can become. I used to think I’d

never get bored, but once I experienced something different, I realized I’d been wasting my time. Other women offer something unique. Lina has always been my favorite, but who says you can’t appreciate someone’s body while still loving them?”
Laughter filled the room, but Lina’s tears had already started to fall. Hearing Eric’s words hurt her more deeply than Bonnie’s Instagram posts ever had. It seemed that in this world, true loyalty was a myth. Despite the fact that Eric had once risked his life for her, he was still capable of loving other women, wasn’t he?
Lina took a moment to regain her composure and adjust her smile before entering the private room. As soon as she walked in, everyone fell silent, afraid of saying something they shouldn’t.
“Honey, what took you so long? I was about to go out and get you.”
With a polite nod and smile, Lina sat next to Eric. She would play along–for both his sake and hers.
“There was a bit of traffic.”
The table was covered with over 20 dishes, all of Lina’s favorites. She liked mild flavors, so nearly every dish was free of chili, even though Eric’s friends loved spicy food.
The room was free of tobacco and alcohol because Lina had a sensitive trachea and couldn’t tolerate the smell. Eric had declared that no smoking or drinking was allowed while Lina was there.
The conversation at the table was courteous, without any profanity or crude jokes, as Lina was averse to foul language.
Everything seemed unchanged, yet Lina felt everything had shifted. It was as if everyone’s eyes were filled with mockery and disdain when

they looked at her. They all believed she was unaware of Eric’s affair and were aiding him in maintaining the facade. However, they didn’t realize that Lina now saw them as part of the charade. Each one had played a role in bringing her and Eric’s relationship to its breaking point.
“Eric, I’m finished eating. Please take your time.”
Lina had never been unreasonable. She appreciated everything Eric did for her and always allowed him enough freedom. Just like every birthday dinner, she understood everyone felt restricted by her presence, so she would always set her utensils down and leave early. The moment she spoke, everyone at the table visibly eased.
“Is that all you ate? Didn’t you like the dishes? Or are you feeling unwell again? Should I order more of your favorite dishes?”
Eric felt uneasy when he noticed Lina had barely touched her food. He checked her forehead, relieved to find she didn’t have a fever.
“Thank goodness you don’t have a temperature. Is the smell bothering you? It’s alright–I can take you to our usual spot,” he suggested, ready
to leave the table.
But Lina caught his arm and shook her head, “It’s okay, really. I’m just full. You all should stay and enjoy yourselves–it’s not often everyone can meet up. I’ll be heading out.”
As she left, everyone stood to see her off. Eric attempted to follow, but Lina pushed him gently back into his seat.
“You’re the birthday boy–you can’t leave. I’ll call when I get home. Don’t worry.”
Eric reluctantly kissed her hand, wishing her a safe trip home. Lina

smiled softly and turned away, thinking to herself, “This is the last performance I’ll do for you, Eric. Are you happy now?” Once outside, she leaned against the wall to compose herself, worried she’d break down if she stayed any longer.
“Wow, Eric, that was tiring. Let’s get the drinks flowing! Why is Lina so high–maintenance? She’s nothing like Bonnie.”
“Yeah, she’s gone now–let’s invite that little minx over!”
As the group laughed, Lina exited the restaurant, finally feeling a sense of calm. She no longer cared if they brought in anyone else. From this point on, it didn’t matter to her anymore.
