- 17.
The next morning, I got the signed divorce
papers and the offer to represent her family.
I wasn’t surprised.
Nick cared about his reputation.
He had to take this case.
And to win, he needed me.
So he signed the papers. It was that simple.
Frank had to go back early.
I stayed behind to work on Summer’s case.
I didn’t go to the firm, everything was done in
the hotel.
Nick came to see me.
“Your stuff is still at the house. You can come
back.”
I shook my head. “That’s not my home
anymore.”
“Just throw it away.”
Nick looked at me.
He wanted me to stay, but he didn’t know
what to say.
Our marriage lacked passion.
Nick knew that he neglected me.
He thought that he was fair, that the firm was
fair, that everything was fair.
But it was a lie.
“Don’t come here so often, I might wear
makeup, and you can’t stand it.”
But Nick took care of me.
While running the case, Nick was the most attentive he’d been in five years.
I didn’t know who he was trying to impress.
