I hung up.
I knew Nick was going to get angry, and start
throwing a tantrum.
Then he’d ignore me for a few days before
coming back to take it out on me.
But today, Nick started calling me over and
over.
I kept hanging up.
Finally, Frank told me to answer.
“Answer it. Give me a chance to make fun of
him.”

I rolled my eyes, I didn’t understand their
beef.
As soon as I answered, Nick’s voice exploded
through the speaker.
“Are you going to keep this up? When are you coming back?!”
I held the phone away from my face and
replied:
“I quit, why would I go back?”
“I didn’t approve it.”
“You told me to get out, Nick.”
Nick couldn’t catch his breath.

Then he said, “Summer’s family is in trouble,
and the firm is understaffed. You need to
come back.”
So that’s why Nick suddenly remembered me.
“Are you done? “I asked.
“Yeah.”
I dropped the phone, I couldn’t believe it.
Summer’s stuff didn’t matter to me.
Did he really think I was going to help him
out?
I tossed the phone aside and turned to Frank
to explain.

message can go in one ear and out the
other.”
I pulled out a file and got back to work.
But Frank took the file away. “Go. Why not?”
