Chapter 8
Matthew had always been waiting for me. The moment I opened my eyes, he was there.
This time, my vision wasn’t clouded–I saw the depth of his love clearly.
So, one week ago, I accepted his proposal. He treated me with such tenderness that my heart dared to hope again.
Stephen, meanwhile, looked as
joke.
if he’d just heard the punchline to a sick
“Jessica, we’re still married. How can you have a fiancé?”
“We are divorced.”
It happened exactly one month
ago.
Before Stephen left on his trip, I handed him a stack of insurance documents for him to sign. Hidden between those pages was the divorce agreement.
So yes, we were already legally divorced.
Stephen stared at me in disbelief, eyes quickly reddening.
“I didn’t agree to this! I never signed any divorce agreement–what right did you have to end our marriage on your own?!”
I didn’t want to argue anymore.
“The divorce papers should’ve already arrived at your house. From now on, your path is yours, and mine is mine.

“We have nothing to do with each other anymore.”
Hearing those words–my absolute, final boundary–Stephen’s hands curled into fists, and his voice trembled.

“Jessica, I’m sorry. I truly am. I know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have lied about the IVF. I’ll make it up to you, I swear.
“Whatever you want–whatever punishment you think I deserve–I’ll accept it. Please?”
And then, right in front of everyone, he suddenly dropped to his knees. He started slapping himself, one cheek, then the other, again and again.
“I’m a bastard. I did terrible things.
“But Jessica, please believe me–I never wanted a divorce. I never stopped loving you. Give me another chance, please…”
I stared coldly at him, feeling no joy, no pain–just apathy.
Matthew frowned and couldn’t hold back his scorn.
“Calling you a beast would be an insult to animals. You implanted another woman’s children in her during your honeymoon and let her carry them for seven months–only for her to find out they weren’t even hers. And now you have the nerve to beg for her forgiveness? If I were you, I’d find a wall and bash my head against it.”
“Someone like you doesn’t deserve her love, let alone her forgiveness.
“Get lost!”
Stephen’s fury boiled over. He turned toward Matthew, his gaze dark and
venomous.
“This is between me and Jessica. What right do you, an outsider, have to

Matthew chuckled coldly. “Jessica is my fiancée now. You’re the outsider here.”
That was the final straw for Stephen. Enraged, he lunged at Matthew, fists swinging.
But Matthew didn’t flinch. Part of him had been waiting for this chance to beat some sense into Stephen.
But I couldn’t bear to see Matthew get hurt because of me.
“Enough!”
I met Stephen’s gaze. “We’re over. I hope you won’t disturb my life again.

I linked arms with Matthew and was about to walk away when Stephen suddenly grabbed me with a desperate grip.
“Don’t go, Jessica.”
The spot where he touched me burned like fire, sending a jolt through my chest. My whole body trembled, and I couldn’t stop it.
Matthew sensed it immediately. Without hesitation, he kicked Stephen aside.
“I told you–don’t touch her!”
Stephen got up, eyes bloodshot, and lunged at Matthew in a blind rage.
But he was no match–Matthew had trained in martial arts for years.
Within moments, Stephen’s face was bruised and bloodied, yet he didn’t stop. He threw punches like a madman, completely out of control.
