Chapter 5
Joey immediately pressed forward anxiously, “What? What about the babies in her belly? Are they okay?”
The deliveryman, still within earshot, chimed in, “Yesterday I saw a pregnant woman get hit–carrying sextuplets, they said. One accident, seven lives gone… it was horrible.”
As he spoke, he handed the package over to them, and a wave of putrid stench hit them in the face.
Everyone gathered around, frowning in confusion.
Joey instinctively covered her nose in disgust. “What the hell is this? Who sent it?
“Is this some sick joke?”
Joey shoved the package into Stephen’s hands, clearly unwilling to touch it herself.
Stephen’s hands trembled, and the box slipped, crashing to the floor.
The lid flipped open on impact–revealing what was inside.
“Ahhh!”
Joey let out a blood–curdling scream. The others gasped in horror, their faces blanching as they got a good look.
“This is…”

in a sharp breath.
Stephen stood frozen, eyes glued to the contents at his feet. For a few seconds, he was completely stunned–until he suddenly lunged at the deliveryman like a madman.
“No! This can’t be! It’s not possible!
“Where is she?! Where’s Jessica?! Where is she right now?!”
The deliveryman looked utterly baffled. “Jessica? Who’s that? I don’t know anyone by that name.”
Stephen shoved him away and tried to steady his breathing. His face was like stone–he now understood. I knew everything.
That’s why I sent this box–to deliver my fury, in the most brutal way possible.

“These things can’t be my children,” Stephen growled. “And Jessica… she’s not dead! There’s no way she’s dead!”
He pulled out his phone and frantically tried to call me.
Joey, still shaken and pale, slapped the box away and shouted furiously, “So what if Jessica’s dead?! What about my children?! How could she be so useless?! Couldn’t she have at least waited until the babies were born before dying?! And now she even had the audacity to send this to me?!”
Her voice cracked as hysteria crept in.

Their friends, shocked at first, now joined in with angry outbursts.
“She was already seven months in. Just three more months and the babies could’ve survived. Now it’s all wasted!”
“Why’d she have to get into an accident now of all times? Six babies in

“And what about the bet we had on the side when we launched the project? We’ve all lost now!”

“Seriously! Do you think she found out the babies weren’t hers, and that’s why she did this?”
“Of couche found out.”

The voices around him buzzed and built into an unbearable drone. Stephen clenched his fists, his chest heaving. Every word grated against his nerves.
No one was picking up the call. The panic crept in, sharp and suffocating.
He roared, “All of you–shut
shut up!
Silence fell instantly. No one dared to speak.
Stephen turned to his assistant and grabbed him by the collar. “Where did you hear that Jessica was in a car accident?! Tell me where!”
Stephen tore through the city like a madinan, desperate to find me.
But all he found was a box of ashes.
“The patient suffered massive internal bleeding from the crash,” the hospital staff told him. “We tried to call her family, but she said there was no one. Before the operation, she left a will. She asked to be cremated immediately after death.”
Stephen’s hands trembled as he was handed the letter I had left behind.
Inside, there was only one sentence.
“Stephen, we’re even now.”
