Chapter 3 Do You Know Me?
The assailant hurled the bottle at an extremely tricky angle, and it was about to hit Synthia’s hand. She instinctively reached out to catch it, but a tall figure suddenly stood in front of her.
A loud bang rang out.
The bottle hit the back of Darion’s hand and fell to the floor.
Synthia was stunned and then looked up. Immediately, she recognized
him.
It was Darion.
She thought, “Seriously? My freshly divorced ex–husband?
“I ran into him? Yeah, just my luck.”
She was perfectly capable of shielding herself from a bottle and didn’t need his help at all.
“Mr. Raymond!” The expression of Eugene Conner, the CFO of DR Group, changed drastically. He shouted, “Mr. Raymond, are you OK? Doctor! See if he’s hurt! Quick!”
Darion shook his head, his deep gaze falling upon Synthia’s hands.
“It’s fine,” he said, sounding relieved. “This pair of hands can’t be hurt. whatsoever.”
Synthia frowned. What did he mean?
Why did he help her?

“We’ve got no time.” Time was pressing, and she couldn’t afford to dwell on it. She turned to Keshawn. “I must go inside and operate now.”
After the commotion, Eugene had already had people take the patient’s family aside.
Synthia immediately entered the operating room and started the operation.
More than four hours passed.
The surgery was over.
The operating room doors were flung open.
“We did it! It was a great success. The patient is no longer in danger!” Though exhausted, Manuel seemed thrilled.
The patient’s family all beamed.
Then Synthia walked out.
The patient’s husband’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment as he walked forward and bowed to her deeply. “I’m so sorry. I… Thank you for saving my wife, Doctor. I apologize on behalf of my family.”
Synthia took off her mask, her face slightly pale.
“I did my job. That’s all,” she smiled. “Congratulations. The surgery was a success. After a few hours of observation, the patient will be transferred to a regular ward, and then you can go in and check on her.”
“Thank you. Thank you so much!”
The man thanked her repeatedly before leaving.
Then the others left, too.
“Dr. Duffy, hi. I’m Darion Raymond.” Darion, who had been waiting aside, strode forward and extended his hand. “May I have a word with you?”
Synthia was stunned.
She thought, “Why is Darion still here?
“The surgery went on for more than four hours. As the CEO of DR Group, he must have been waiting here for a reason.”
“Do you know me?” she asked with a subtle trace of mockery in her
eyes.
She didn’t extend her hand.
But she didn’t explain why, and the smile on her face vanished.
“Yes. I’ve been looking for you for three years.” Darion withdrew his hand and curved his lips. “Dr. Sutton, it’s a pleasure to know you, the exclusive disciple of Dr. Becker, the world–renowned neurosurgeon.”
Synthia thought, “So, that explains it.
“He knows me as Alice Sutton.
“That makes sense–though we were married for three years, we never met each other. How could he possibly recognize me?”
She looked at him, seeming displeased. “So, you vouched for me and even shielded me from the bottle… because I’m Alice?”

Darion nodded. “Yes. Nothing can happen to your hands.”
“Why?” She didn’t get it. “For the sake of argument, let’s say I am
Alice. How are my hands related to you, Mr. Raymond? Why do you care so much?”
She sounded harsh.
Darion, being a business tycoon for years, naturally sensed her hostility. She treated others nicely but pulled a long face when facing. him.
But he didn’t dwell on it.
Because he figured that those with talents more or less struck others as odd.
“I’m hoping you can perform a surgery,” he said while handing over a file without beating around the bush. “This is the patient’s medical record. I’ve talked to a bunch of renowned doctors, but none of them agreed.”
Everyone said it was impossible.
But he didn’t want to give up.
His last, only hope was to find Alice, the famous surgeon.
After a moment of hesitation, Synthia took the file. Darion had shielded her, and she didn’t want to owe him anything.
She might as well accept the patient so as to repay him.
After the surgery, she’d have nothing to do with him anymore.
Opening the file, she saw a pretty face. The woman in the photo had

straight bangs, long hair, and two dimples, which made her smile even more radiant.
She thought. “Darion went all out just for her?
“I never saw him once when we were married, but since he’s the CEO of DR Group, I saw rumors about him online every day. Besides, when I lived in the Raymond’s villa, Tianna once brought up inadvertently that Darion has an unforgettable love.
“So, am I looking at her? Darion’s unforgettable love?
“Whatever. It has nothing to do with me anyway.”
After reading the file, she knew why Darion had been trying so hard to find her.
“She has three months left, tops.” She looked at him calmly. “The bullet in her head has compressed the optic nerve. I presume she no longer can see things, and she has problems with her hearing. Right?”
Pursing his lips, Darion nodded. “Yes.”
“From what I’m looking at, the best time to operate on her was a year ago.” She was confused. “Was there a reason the surgery was postponed?”
Darion was rich.
Even if they missed the window, they had several opportunities this past year. Why delay till now?
It didn’t make any sense.
Besides, given the medical record, even if she agreed to perform, she couldn’t say for sure she’d succeed.

She wasn’t omnipotent.
“Because I didn’t want to take chances,” Darion explained. “Other doctors were only half–sure about the surgery, and the risks were too great. I won’t be relieved unless the operating doctor is a hundred percent positive that they can succeed.”
Synthia thought, “A hundred percent positive? Gosh, it seems he does love her very much.
“But then again, if he loves her that deeply, why did he agree to marry me three years ago?
“Was he worried that if she didn’t make it, he’d end up with nothing, so he wanted a backup plan?
“In any respect, he’s a jerk.
“A total jerk!”
She cursed inwardly.
Then she sneered and said loudly, “Mr. Raymond, are you listening to yourself? Even if others weren’t completely sure about the odds, what if you couldn’t find me? Or, what if I wasn’t sure either? The surgery has been delayed for so long. Aren’t you worried that the surgery will be a failure, and she’ll die on the operating table?”
She wasn’t cursing his beloved.
The fact remained that he had wasted too much time. Coupled with the fact that the woman was so frail, it was pretty likely that she died on the operating table.
However, Darion was very certain. “I’ll find you sooner or later as long as you’re alive.”

What he didn’t say was he had plan B. The surgery must happen in two months, and if he hadn’t found her then, he had to take the chances.
Synthia wanted to laugh.
She thought. “Does he feel good about himself showcasing his love for her at the cost of putting her life at risk?”
“I’ve reviewed her medical file.” She gave it back to him. “But I can’t decide now.
“Why not?” Darion asked.
She rolled her eyes. “Mr. Raymond, you must think money can get you anything you want, right? But you’re wrong. For example, your
lover…”
Darion stared at her face and said word by word, “Say yes, and you can name any terms.”
