Chapter 6
“I also heard Claire’s been planting her people in Kyle’s company lately,” Summer said. “She’s got it easy now. The moment she sealed the mate bond with Kyle; her old pack finally recognized her. And their family business in the human world is taking off too.”
“Riding someone else’s coattails must be so convenient. Just thinking about how hard you worked to bring Kyle resources, only for Claire to reap the benefits, drives me crazy.”
I didn’t pause flipping through the project files, my phone on speaker while I chatted with Summer.
“I didn’t exactly lose out,” I said calmly. “I earned my share while I was in the picture.
“But Kyle’s probably not having such a great time either. Sure, he has operational control, but the real decision–making still lies with his father. There’s no way Claire’s people will just take over the company completely. And don’t forget, Kyle isn’t the only heir to the blood stone pack”
It was hard to say, but I knew Kyle well enough to understand his ambition.
Whether in the company or the pack, he was never the sole authority. I suspected Claire was pulling a fast one: slipping people in without asking, hoping to get things done after the fact.
Thanks to the drama at that bonding ceremony, domestic business partners were well aware of the fallout between Kyle and me.
Some of them even reached out to quietly update me, like how the blood stone pack had just promoted Kyle’s cousin as acting Alpha.
The pressure was very real.
Between love and leadership, Kyle was stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Summer clearly didn’t appreciate my neutral tone.
“What’s that supposed to mean? Why did you suddenly become so empathetic after going abroad? I could feel your pity for him through the screen. What now? You feel sorry for his miserable life? What’s next? Are you going to warm his heart with your kindness?”
I smiled faintly.
“No. But I was thinking… maybe this is the perfect time to make some money.
“I really underestimated you, Heather. I thought you were just some lovesick fool, but it turns out

you’re a capitalist at heart.”
What I didn’t expect was to actually receive a call from Kyle two months later.
“Heather,” he said.
Hearing his voice after all this time sent a cold shiver down my spine.
“Kyle? Mr. Hall? No wonder Professor never told me the client’s full name. He kept saying it was an ‘old acquaintance.‘ So it was you.”
To be honest, my reaction to Kyle finding me was indifferent at best.
I’d gone a
gone abroad, not died.
The werewolf circle, even internationally, wasn’t exactly huge. And in business, there weren’t many barriers either. It was just a matter of effort if Kyle wanted to track me down.
“Heather, I…”
His stammering instantly made me silently roll my eyes in irritation.
Whatever he wanted to say, it didn’t matter.
There was nothing left to talk about with a cheating ex–mate. Not wishing him to spiral into oblivion was already me being kind.
Honestly, the fact that I was even answering the phone was just because he was now a client.
I cut him off coldly.
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll go ahead and introduce the project to Alpha on your behalf.”
But Kyle was still stuck in his own head, trying to drag up the past.
“Heather, I’m really sorry about what happened. I know I hurt you. That’s why you left, why you ran from the bonding ceremony and disappeared overseas. Sorry, I owe you that apology. I just…”
I stayed quiet for a moment, then let out a soft sigh.
“Kyle, did you get what you wanted?”
There was a long silence on the other end.
When he finally spoke, his voice had lost all its former certainty.

“I don’t know.”
“Claire’s changed so much, I’m starting to wonder if she’s even the same person I once loved.”
“I’m sorry. I know I shouldn’t be disturbing your life. I just suddenly wanted to talk to you. I went to an Alpha gathering today, and it reminded me of how we used to fight side by side.”
I let out a small scoff and decided to end the surprisingly civil conversation.
“If Lily found out you’re still contacting me, I doubt she’d find it appropriate. Sasha, could you come here a second? Please go over the project details with Alpha Kyle for me. I’ve got other things to handle, excuse me.”
Even the most heart–pounding first love grew dull with time.
Perhaps every person had experienced two, or at least two, kinds of love, which were first love and true love.
When you sealed the mate bond with your true love, over time, the passion could wane amidst the routines of daily life, while the memory of your first love remained as ‘the irreplaceable love that never faded.‘
However, if you sealed the mate bond with your first love, that love could become mundane and fail to fulfill your desires, while your true love still lingered, hidden within your heart.
Whether it was a true love or a first love, in the end, it was always the unattainable love that stirred. people’s hearts and lured them in.
People, no matter how loved they were now, always seemed to long for the love they never got.
