Chapter 21
The day Adelia’s novel won an award, light snow started falling outside the window.
She stood by the window watching the snow. Vaughn showed her at some point and put a cashmere coat over her shoulders.

“I booked a table at the revolving restaurant, we went to celebrate tonight.”
When the two arrived at the restaurant, the waiter led them to a private viewing room.
Three sides of the private room were floor–to–ceiling windows, so you could take in the whole city’s night view.
There was a red velvet tablecloth on the dining table right in the center, with crystal candle holders and Ecuadorian red roses carefully arranged
on top.
Vaughn clinked his glass lightly with hers.
Then, out of nowhere, he pulled out a letter tied with a faded four–leaf clover and pushed it in front of Adelia.
“Surprise I got for you, open it and see.
Adelia undid the four–leaf clover.
The pen marks on the envelope had already faded, but the “A.K.” in the corner made her catch her breath.
“These were…

“The letters you wrote to your pen pal V.H. back in high school. said quietly, “There were forty–three in total, and I kept every single one.”
Adelia casually opened the top letter.

When she saw the familiar handwriting, her pupils suddenly shrank and her fingers unconsciously gripped the edge of the letter.
This letter was clearly written by her when she was sixteen!
Adelia started writing novels back in high school, but she kept getting rejected by publishers.
Unwilling to give up, she found a pen pal with the code name “V.H.” and regularly sent her manuscripts to them for feedback.
That was a time when the internet was already everywhere, but Adelia just loved this slow way of communicating.
Luckily, V.H. had a lot in common with her, and they quickly became close friends who could talk about anything.
And every piece she sent out, V.H. read very carefully and made notes on the side.
With V.H.’s help, her writing got a lot better, and she felt more and more confident about writing.
Until the year he graduated from high school, V.H. suddenly told her in a letter, My family is sending me to a closed training camp. I can’t write back to you anymore.
He just disappeared from her world like that.
Right at that time, Jordan and Diana strongly supported Gwen studying art, and they also said the Keith family couldn’t have both daughters “not doing proper work,” so they burned all her manuscripts.

Adelia hadn’t bounced back since then, and she hadn’t thought about writing novels for a long time.
And now…
Seeing the letter she once sent in Vaughn’s hands, Adelia was totally
stunned.

She suddenly looked up at Vaughn, all her questions and disbelief frozen
in that moment.
J’At that time, I read your draft on the cruise and found your style really familiar.” Vaughn told the story of how he found out Adelia was his pen pal. “The way you wrote about the first meeting between the heroine and the hero was exactly the same as back then.”
“But I wasn’t really sure back then, so I took two days to compare carefully and confirmed what I guessed.”
Adelia suddenly remembered the look on Vaughn’s face when he told her on the cruise deck, “Your writing has a special vibe.”
So, back then, he was already suspicious.
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier that you were V.H.?” Adelia couldn’t help asking.
“At first I was afraid you’d find out who I was, and think I invested in publishing your novel just because of our past.” Vaughn paused, “Later, I felt that meeting again like this should happen on the day you really made your dream come true.
“And I remember you said in your letter that when you became a bestselling novelist, you would tell me first.”
Adelia heard that, and tears suddenly fell.

She remembered that on the night of her eighteenth birthday, she really did write something like that.
That was the last letter she wrote to V.H.
In the letter, she thanked him for his support over the years, and naively promised that if she became famous in the future, he would be the first person she’d tell.
With blurry, teary eyes, she saw Vaughn take a bracelet that shimmered from his suit pocket and slowly walk up to her.
“When I got that letter back then, I never found a chance to reply, and when I finally could, I found out you had already moved.”
The silver bracelet swayed a little in his palm, reflecting a gentle glow.
“Back then, I wanted to say something but didn’t get the chance. Now, I want to make it up.”
Vaughn gently put the bracelet on her trembling fingertips.
“Adelia, I always believed you would be a great novelist. In the days to come, please let me be your first reader, okay?”
Adelia looked into Vaughn’s eyes.
After a moment, Zheng nodded seriously, “Okay, I promised you.”
