Chapter 20
The sound of the ambulance siren gradually faded away.
Rain beat down on Adelia’s pale face and mixed with her tears.
She stood on the concrete in front of the villa, and her fingertips still had the sticky feel of Ethan’s blood.
A glaring car headlight cut through the rain.
The black Maybach braked hard in front of her, Vaughn didn’t even have time to open his umbrella before he jumped out of the car and wrapped her up in his coat.
“Adelia.” Vaughn held her tighter, like he wanted to pull her into his bones. “Don’t be scared, I took you home.”
Adelia’s face was buried in his shoulder, and she smelled the familiar
scent of cedar
This hug was so tight that her ribs ached, but strangely, it made her stop shaking.
The heater in the car was on full blast, and Vaughn wrapped Adelia up in layers with a blanket.
It wasn’t until then that he slowly said, “During this time, I contacted seven groups like Solvance Group and Prosperix Group, and teamed up with them to take all of the Fargeat Group’s market share.”
“Yesterday the court already froze all of Ethan’s assets.” In the rearview mirror, Vaughn’s eyes were as dark as ink that wouldn’t fade. “Ethan already had nothing left, no cards to play at all.”

Chapter 20
Adelia finally came to her senses and asked Vaughn softly, “How’s your injury?”
He just hugged her so tight, I don’t know if he touched her wound or not.
Vaughn smiled, and there was a gentle look in his eyes.
“I’ve been fine for a long time, but you…” He paused, “Adelia, you could try to trust me from now on. I always had a way to keep you safe.”

Adelia was settled by Vaughn in a hillside villa under his name, and she spent a long, peaceful time there.
Vaughn worked from home most of the time.
The two of them were often like this: one curled up on the couch, the other sitting at the dining table, each busy with their own stuff, but still able to feel each other’s presence.
In spending so much time together like this, Adelia’s feelings for Vaughn gradually changed in a subtle way.
She started to naturally accept Vaughn’s care, and sometimes thought about preparing little surprises for him.
That day Adelia woke up, slipped on her fuzzy slippers and went downstairs, and found Vaughn standing at the stove in the kitchen frying
eggs.
The cuffs of his white shirt were rolled up to his elbows, showing his well–defined forearms, and the top two buttons at the collar were left
open.
“I’ll help you.” Adelia reached out to take the spatula, but he dodged her.

Chapter 20
“It was my honor to make breakfast for the great writer.” Vaughn flipped the eggs, the golden yolk sizzling in the pan.
After moving into this villa, Adelia often curled up on the lounge chair in the sunroom to write, and Vaughn handling documents not far away.

Sometimes when she got stuck writing and looked up, she always met his smiling eyes.
One rainy night, Adelia was writing a key scene when the power suddenly went out.
In the dark, she heard a rustling sound, and Vaughn came over holding a candlestick.
In the warm yellow glow, he sat next to her and helped her analyze the character’s motives, word by word.
“You’re more like the author of this novel than I am.” Adelia joked with him at the time.
Vaughn just smiled and tucked her long hair behind her ear, “Maybe it’s because I knew the author pretty well.”
This answer made Adelia’s heart skip a beat.
At that moment, she thought Vaughn was just trying to cheer her up.
Until one snowy winter night, she found out who Vaughn really was.
