Chapter 27
“Suzanne, will you give me a chance to pursue you?”
Since I was little, people have said those who break a sincere heart should swallow a thousand needles.
Lincoln’s eyes sparkled as he looked at me and I couldn’t bear to be harsh. I began hesitantly.
“You probably don’t know. I’m not just divorced, I’ve also … “M
“Suzanne!“N
He cut me off before I could finish. His gaze was full of pain and tenderness.
“Only someone who doesn’t truly love you would care about your past. Someone who really likes you would only feel sorry for what you’ve been through.“N
His voice trembled as he lowered his eyes.
“They’d just hate that they didn’t meet you sooner.”
Lincoln’s words made my heart flutter and an inappropriate image of Simon when he first met me flashed through my mind.
He had looked at me with the same pity, promising undying love amidst a room full of white roses.
Back in university, Maxwell casually tossed me the baby’s–breath that Chelsea didn’t want. He had also long forgotten his vow to care for me for the rest of my life.N
Alas, white roses were Julie’s favourite and baby’s breath was Chelsea’s.
They had never cared about my preferences, assuming I would be grateful if I received their gifts.
I wiped away tears that had unknowingly streamed down my face and heard my own voice, slightly choked.§
“Okay “N
Lincoln knew I wasn’t giving him a clear answer,
Still, the fact that I was willing to give him a chance made him practically burst with excitement.
I was carrying a big breakfast bag as we chatted and laughed our way out of the hotel.
Suddenly, two familiar figures rushed forward and slapped the bag out of my hands.
I frowned and looked over. This time, it wasn’t just Simon; even Maxwell had come.
They glared at Lincoln with furious eyes, like children whose candy had been snatched away.
Maxwell stepped forward and grabbed Lincoln’s collar as if breathing fire.N
“What kind of trash are you daring to steal her?“N
Simon stood to the side in silent, but the look in his eyes directed at Lincoln was full of anger and disdain.
In their eyes, Lincoln was nothing more than an ordinary person, not even qualified to compete with them.
Lincoln’s gaze swept over the three of us and he instantly understood our relationship.N
He punched Maxwell in the face without any hesitation.
Maxwell stepped back in embarrassment, covering his face and trying to rush up, but was scared away by the knife in Lincoln’s hand.
“No matter what kind of relationship you had with Suzanne before, from now on, you have absolutely nothing to do with her.“N
“If you dare to bother her again, I swear I’ll make sure you regret it, even if it costs me my life.”
Simon ignored Lincoln’s words and turned to me,
“Suzanne, you’re really going to choose someone with no background, no status?“N
I sneered. Being with people like them, with their so–called family backgrounds, had only left me battered and bruised. What else had I gained?%
“What he said is exactly what I want to say.“}}
I couldn’t even be bothered to give them another glance and I pulled Lincoln away from the hotel.
We walked silently and I mentally rehearsed my words for a long time before finally stopping.
“You saw it. I used to have feelings for both of those brothers.”
“It wasn’t just emotional. I had deeper ties with them, too.”
Lincoln didn’t say anything. When I thought he would finally give up, he suddenly pulled me into his arms.
“Suzanne, when you were chasing after others, why didn’t you ever look back?”
