Chapter 26%
Simon’s eyes turned red and large tears rolled down his cheeks as he slumped against the wall.
“Suzanne, I thought you came here because you still cared about me.”
I rolled my eyes. If the company hadn’t assigned me here, I wouldn’t have come at all.
Moreover, I had long forgotten that Simon had stayed here before, let alone cared about him.
When I didn’t respond, he slowly crouched and buried his head between his knees.
Soon after, a low sob echoed in the room.
*Suzanne, I’m sorry.”I
I glanced at the time. It was already eleven at night.
I had no energy left to listen to this pointless apology, so I walked to the door, clearly hinting for him to leave. “Okay, I forgive you. Can you go now?”
Simon didn’t budge. He looked up at me, tears still in his eyes.
“Suzanne, someone stole my wallet and ID right after I arrived. I have nowhere to stay.”
I frowned, not believing him for a second.
“You have nowhere to stay? Really?”
He nodded quickly, eyes lighting up with hope like he thought I might take him in.Ë
I let out a cold laugh.
“You must be fortunate, huh? Mugged in a foreign country and somehow still managed to find your ex–wife’s hotel room without a hitch.“” Looking at his pitiful act, all I felt was disgust.}
“Suzanne, it’s not like that. I really .. ”
“Get out.“2
Simon’s frantic explanation was cut short by my cold words. He clutched his chest, gasping for air as if he couldn’t breathe.
“Suzanne.”
“Get out!”
Simon stood up hesitantly, carefully stepping in his muddy footprints as he walked out the door.
I slammed the door shut and looked at the endless stream of messages from Simon and Maxwell on my phone, feeling annoyed.” They had already chased me abroad. Why were these two brothers still haunting me?
I directly blocked all their numbers and my phone finally fell silent.\
At last, the Ferguson brothers were out of my head for good. I collapsed into bed and drifted into a deep sleep.§
When I opened my eyes again, it was morning. Today was the last day of the exchange program. I packed up and got ready to meet Lincoln and leave together.”
The moment I opened the door, I found Lincoln asleep outside my room.
Startled, I quickly shook him awake.
*Suzanne?” he mumbled, then got up and smiled as he handed me the breakfast he’d brought.
“What are you doing here?”
His expression turned serious. He pulled a small knife from somewhere and stuffed it into my hand.
“Suzanne, when I went out last night, I saw a homeless man lurking near your door. He looked suspicious, definitely not someone with good intentions.“2
“I was worried he might hurt you, so I stayed here to watch.“>
I instantly realized that the homeless man Lincoln was talking about was Simon. After a moment of silence, I looked into his eyes. “He’s my ex–husband.“%
Lincoln froze, staring at me blankly without saying a word.
I smiled to myself. My thoughts were correct. Once people knew about my past, they would avoid me like the plague.
Even Simon, who’d grown up with me, hadn’t stuck around. What chance did a young, impulsive guy like Lincoln have? “Alright, let’s go
I didn’t pay too much attention to Lincoln’s reaction. In my eyes, he was just an immature younger brother.
Lincoln grabbed my wrist from behind. He looked at me with sincere eyes and smiled.
“Since you’re divorced. Does that mean I have a chance, Suzanne?‘
