Chapter 24%
I turned my gaze to the dazed Maxwell and raised an eyebrow.”
“What now? Do you have something to say, too?“}]
It was like he suddenly woke up from a dream. Out of nowhere, he produced several strawberry cakes.}
“Suzanne, I’m sorry.”
“Our child was lost because I forced you to eat this.“>
“No matter what I say now, I can’t compensate for your suffering.“}]
“I will suffer the same pain you did. Will that make you feel any better?“}
I frowned, just about to speak, when Maxwell’s actions interrupted me.}
Maxwell filled the table with cakes, picked up a spoon and started eating without regard for anything.}
As if remembering something, he threw down the spoon and frantically grabbed the cakes with his hands, shoving them into his mouth.
I remembered that day, too. I was also like this, crawling on the ground like a dog.
Maxwell wouldn’t let me use my hands, only allowing me to eat with my mouth while lying on my stomach.
The cakes on the table were smeared everywhere. In a short while, almost half of them were gone.”
He suddenly stood up, covering his mouth as he rushed to the bathroom to throw up.
Before finishing, he staggered back to the table and kept eating.
He ate and vomited, vomited and ate. I couldn’t bear to watch any longer and reached out to push the cakes on the table to the ground.>
“Maxwell, if you want to die, do it elsewhere.“}]
At those words, something flickered in his eyes. He looked at me like he used to in high school when he’d skip class to buy me bubble
tea.
“Suzanne, are you worried about me?“>
“Does that mean you still care?“}
I rolled my eyes. Noticing the growing crowd of nosy onlookers around us, I kept my voice calm.}
“Maxwell, whether you live or die has nothing to do with me.“}]
I glanced at the mess he made and the nervous ernployees hovering nearby.
“I just don’t want the police to show up and think a lunatic is on the loose and drag me into it, too.“>
Maxwell went pale in an instant. Still clutching a strawberry cake, his eyes rolled back and he fainted.
I gave him a cold look, then kindly called an ambulance before leaving the café.
Back at my apartment, I saw the news blowing up with headlines about the Fergusons‘ heir collapsing from food poisoning at a café. I frowned as I scrolled through my phone, relieved that no one had caught me in any of the photos.
Days passed with no word from Simon or Maxwell.
I didn’t know if Maxwell was alive or dead or when Simon would finally deliver his promise to “give me an explanation.”}
But by now, I didn’t care about them anymore.”
The company even threw me a welcome party on my first day at the new job.
After a while, I’d already gotten close with my coworkers.
“Suzanne, I’d like you to represent our company at this designer exchange event.“!
The boss handed me an invitation.
I glanced at the location. It looked familiar, but I couldn’t quite place it.”
Then he nudged a young man forward.
“This is my son. You two can go together. It’ll be good to have company.”
I hesitated for a moment but nodded anyway.”
I guessed that the boss wanted to set me up with his son. I had no interest in romance, but I didn’t want to offend him,&
Seeing me agree, the boss beamed and patted my shoulder. The young man’s ears turned red and he said in a voice as soft as a mosquito’s buzz.
*Just call me Lincoln, Suzanne.“%
I found it strange. Having spent so much time with the Fergusons brothers, I had subconsciously come to believe that all men in the world were like them.”
Now, seeing someone so innocent, I was a little unaccustomed to it.”
