Chapter 23
One of the companies I had sent my resume to finally got back to me.
Although it had been a long time since I was part of the workforce.
Thanks to my professor’s recommendation and the many awards I received during university, I was invited to an interview.
I gave a helpless little laugh. Was this what they meant by “unlucky in love, lucky in your career“?
I dug out a nearly forgotten business suit from the back of my closet, the fabric faintly dusty.
Looking into the mirror, I felt like I was again seeing the bold, confident version of myself.
I arrived at the company as scheduled and the interview went surprisingly well
When the interviewer heard I hadn’t worked in the design field for years, his tone showed clear regret.
“Miss Sullivan, if you had joined our company a few years ago, I have no doubt you’d already be one of the top designers, not just demestically but internationally.”
I smiled calmly.N
“It’s not too late now.“N
We had a great conversation and he insisted on introducing me to their CEO.M
Only then did I realize the CEO was another one of my university professors.N
He couldn’t recruit me back then and regretted it for a long time.N
“Suzanne?” he said, a little surprised but mostly delighted.
“Professor Coleman,” I greeted him politely with a nod.N
He said “great!” three times in a row, his eyes nearly disappearing with how wide he was smiling.
“Back then, your mentor and I were strongly against your decision to leave your career and return to family life,”
“I’ve heard about what happened to you. Don’t worry. Now that you’re ready to return to design, we’ll support you with everything we’ve got,”
“I know how talented you are. Our company will definitely focus on nurturing your growth.“W
I smiled at him gratefully. I left the office after confirming my start date for the following Monday.
Just as I left the company, I ran into the Ferguson brothers.N
“Suzanne, you’re really here!“N
My gaze turned colder and I pursed my lips without saying a word.
“Suzanne, can we talk?“N
Passersby looked curiously at our strange trio.N
I rubbed my aching temples and followed them into a nearby coffee shop.
After we sat down, my expression wasn’t pleasant. I looked at them coldly.
“How did you know I’d be here today?“N
“Were you guys following me?“N
Hearing my casual words, Maxwell and Simon both stiffened.N
“Suzanne, it’s not like that, “N
just wanted to talk to you.”
“Say what you need to say quickly.“N
I interrupted them.
A hint of hurt flashed across Simon’s eyes and he took a shaky sip of the coffee before him.k “Suzanne, do you really not want me anymore?“}
I took a deep breath, my fingertips clenching until they were almost whiteo.
“You were the ones who abandoned me first.”
‘Because of Chelsea, because of Julie.”
I swept my eyes over them. Seeing them shake their heads, I sighed.
“I hate being doubted. If you never truly believed me, what’s the point in staying together?“M “Maxwell, I’ve already repaid you for saving my life over the years.“}}
“Simon. I know you loved me, but that love couldn’t withstand a few manipulative words.“# I let out a bitter laugh
“You might as well take Maxwell and get him checked. See if he has the same illness I did.”
“You installed surveillance in our home. You could’ve easily reviewed the footage and seen whether or not I really hit Julie that Jay ”
“But no, you didn’t bother. A few of her words were all it took for you to believe I was a disgrace.”
Simon’s face darkened and he fled the café like he was escaping
He only left behind a promise to ‘give me an explanation”
