Simon nodded immediately and knelt beside the bed, tightly holding my hand.
“That day, you told me you would try on dresses, but I waited and waited and you never came out.“>
“I knew something was wrong, so I went in and the fitting room was already empty.“>
He brought my hand to his chest. I could hear the steady thumping of his heartbeat as he spoke.§ “Suzanne, I was so scared.“}
“I’ve made a lot of enemies overseas over the years and I was afraid they had come here to kidnap you.“} “Thankfully, you’re safe.”
I pulled my hand back.
“And that vice president of yours?“}
“You two… looked like a perfect match.”
Simon gave a helpless laugh.
“She’s just my business partner. Her name’s Julie. If you want, once you’re better, I’ll introduce you two.“>
“She agreed to help me with a little act. I gave her a promotion in return. There’s nothing romantic between us.“} An act?
I looked at him, confused.§
“After you were kidnapped, I suspected my enemies were involved. I needed to throw them off, so I pretended Julie and I were in a relationship.“>
“That way, if they thought she was important to me, they might stop targeting you and buy me some time to find you.“}
I frowned.
“What about that day at the university?“>
“I noticed someone was following me, probably one of the people watching me. I was trying to throw them off, but saw you with Maxwell.”
His face darkened with frustration.
“Suzanne, I failed you.”
“I had just returned to his city and wasn’t familiar with the roads. I lost track of you, which allowed him to retake you.“>
I gently reached for his hand and placed the other over my belly, feeling a pang of regret.
“I didn’t even know I was pregnant.“}
If I had known, I would’ve done anything to escape instead of letting Maxwell lock me up.
Looking back, I see that the sore back and aching waist I had a few days ago were probably early signs. I didn’t pay attention. I saw the guilt in Simon’s eyes and forced smile to lighten the mood.
*So, what about our wedding?“{

He finally smiled, too and the tension in the room eased a little.
He pinched my cheek playfully and said with warmth in his voice.”

For the next few days, Simon didn’t let anyone near me. He insisted on doing everything himself in the hospital room.
I looked helplessly at him, holding a spoon in front of my mouth.
“I haven’t reached the point where I need to be fed, have 1?”
Simon shook his head thoughtfully, stopping my attempt to take the bowl from him.
“No, your body hasn’t recovered yet. You can’t do any heavy work.”
“Besides, you’re my wife. If I don’t take good care of you, what if someone else takes advantage of the situation?” His words instantly reminded me of Maxwell. My heart sank a little. Would Simon mind my past?
He had rushed back from abroad at my call and we quickly got our marriage certificate. Then, Maxwell locked me up.N Simon hadn’t asked about my past. If he knew I had once had a miscarriage for Maxwell, would he still be like this?N Seeing my silence, Simon ruffled my hair helplessly.
‘Suzanne, I won’t let anyone hurt you again.”
I looked into his sincere eyes and nodded gently%
If it were Simon, I thought I could trust him again.
On the day I was discharged from the hospital, the driver who came to pick us up was someone I hadn’t expected.§
