Chapter 110
Maxwell, Simon and I all graduated from the same university.
Back then, I willingly followed Maxwell around, saving seats and getting meals for him and Chelsea every day.
Our “trio” was quite the talk of the campus.
I used to worry that Maxwell would get the wrong idea, so I kept my distance from Simon.
Even though we were at the same school, we barely saw each other.
Looking at these familiar buildings, I felt dazed for a moment.}
It was as if I could see Simon secretly hiding in a corner, watching me.
I blinked and it wasn’t a hallucination. Simon was really there, sitting on a bench not far away.
My eyes lit up. I forgot all about Maxwell standing next to me. I was just about to call out when a large hand suddenly covered my mouth.
“Don’t be so quick. Watch first, then decide if you still want to return to him.“}
I froze, my eyes fixed on the bench.
A girl in a dress appeared out of nowhere, smiling as she handed Simon an ice cream.§
He didn’t turn her down. He accepted it gently, even fed her a bite himself.
I took a closer look. It was the same woman from the video yesterday.
She had traded her sharp business, suit for a more playful, feminine outfit.
“You probably don’t know, she is Julie Harris. She graduated from this university, too.“>
“She’s been into my brother for years. When she heard he was going abroad, she chased after him.“>
“She’s now his vice president.” Maxwell’s mocking voice came from above me.
“Tell me, do you think my brother would choose a childhood fiancée like you or a successful, powerful woman who’s his equal?”
Tears slid down my cheeks, failing onto Maxwell’s hand individually.
I had always believed Simon liked me, but I couldn’t gamble on whether he cared enough about my status.
Maxwell wasn’t wrong. I was just a childhood tagalong who had once shared a roof with him. Who in his circle would ever want someone like me?”
“He’s just a childhood friend …“}
Simon’s words from the video echoed in my mind again.§
What hurt more than the words was how he accepted a woman who clearly had feelings for him.”
Maybe Maxwell sensed my heartbreak and gently patted my shoulder, removing his hand from my mouth.
“There’s still time to change your mind.“}
“Marry me. I’ll make you Mrs. Ferguson.“}
“I’ll do my best to keep Chelsea out of your sight.”
I wasn’t in the mood to listen to Maxwell’s promises. I bit my lip hard, preventing myself from making a sound and stared at the two people on the bench.”
There was envy and there was regret.
The head of the Ferguson’s paired with a successful career woman, both alumni, a match from school uniforms to wedding gowns. Who wouldn’t say they were a perfect couple??
I let out a bitter laugh.
Back in college, my professor once said I had the most natural talent for design he’d ever seen.N
If I hadn’t given up my design career back then, if I hadn’t chosen to stay by Maxwell’s side out of some misguided sense of gratitude for saving me.
By now, Ill be standing at the top of my field.”
I’d be confident to stand beside Simon instead of lurking in the shadows like some pathetic outsider, watching their happiness unfold.N However, it’s all just what–ifs now.
I closed my eyes, my vision darkening as I suddenly fell backwards.
The last thing I saw before passing out was Simon’s gaze meeting mine from a distance.
He clearly hadn’t expected to see me here. Panicked, he dropped his ice cream and rushed toward me like a madman.
