Chapter 10
The next day, the police contacted me.
I learned that Caspian had chased the man in black for over a dozen blocks trying to recover the ring.
When he finally caught up, the humiliated robber pulled out a knife and stabbed him, leaving him in a pool of blood.
Lying in the hospital bed, Caspian was deathly pale.]
But when he saw me, his eyes lit up:
“Posey, you came!“]
His hoarse voice carried tender affection]
As if he’d finally waited for his beloved to come home.
I quickly shook my head to clear these ridiculous thoughts:
“I already contacted Ruelle. She should be here tonight to take care of you.”
“Posey, why did you call her? I only want you with me! You don’t have to do anything–just let me see you and I’ll feel at peace!”
In that moment, Caspian’s selfish coldness was on full display.
He wanted peace of mind, but seeing him just made me annoyed and disgusted.]
My revulsion showed plainly on my face.]
“Posey, you still… can’t forgive me?”
Hope sparkled in his eyes.
“No.“]]
The light shattered.
“I’ll cut ties with Ruelle right in front of you. I promise to love and protect you like before…]
By the end, his voice was barely audible.
I’d already spent ten years of my youth repaying his past love and protection.]
I couldn’t gamble the next ten years on him loving me like before.
Especially since he was no longer the hero who’d protected me in the darkness.[]
“Caspian, leave yourself some dignity. Don’t make me regret ever loving your”]
“Posey, what do I have to do for you to forgive me? Why are you being so heartless?“]
“Because I don’t love you anymorel
Caspian in the hospital bed completely collapsed.[]
After staring at me for a long time, his already saw clearly that there was truly no trace of love left in my eyes.[]
“Posey, we loved each other so much–how did we get to this point?”
“It’s all my fault for being confused and deceiving myself. I shouldn’t have sought thrills or trampled on your feelings and made you sad…”
“Posey, Iregret it… If you had been the one kissing me under the northern lights, if you had been the one watching penguins with me in Antarctica, if you had been the one accepting my proposal–would you not have run from the wedding?”
put down the fruit I’d bought for him and turned to leave.
Life doesn’t have so many “what ifs.“]
The moment the door closed, I heard him sobbing like a trapped animal.]
I didn’t stop walking–I continued toward the lab, toward my bright future.]
Later, Caspian completely broke with Ruelle, making public the ugly truth about how she and her mother had abused me and mistreated my father.]
He hoped that when I heard about it, I might look back at him one more time.[]
But that was just his delusion.[]
