Chapter 15
It was Dylan.]]
He looked like absolute shit–way too skinny, dark circles under his eyes, scruffy beard. Nothing like the confident golden boy he used to be.]
The second he saw me, his eyes lit up. “Avery!“]
He rushed toward me like he was gonna hug me. I stepped back.[]
“Hi sir, what can I get you?” I used my customer service voice.]]
His face fell completely. “Avery, it’s me. Dylan.“[]
“I know.” My voice stayed perfectly level. “What would you like to order?“]
“I…” He stared at me, eyes getting watery. “I’ve been looking for you for three months.“]]
“Hit every town within driving distance.“]
“Asked everywhere I could think of.“]
“I thought you were…“]]
He didn’t finish.]
But I knew what he was thinking. He thought something had happened to me.[]
“As you can see, I’m fine“]]
“What would you like to order? There are other customers waiting.“]
I kept my professional smile in place.]]
He stared at me for a long moment, then finally said: “A coffee. Whatever.“]
I turned to make his drink. My hands were perfectly steady, not even a tremor. When I finished, I handed it to him. “That’ll be four dollars.“]
He fumbled for his wallet, hands shaking so bad he dropped bills all over the floor.
I didn’t help him pick them up. Just stood there waiting.]
He scrambled to collect the money and handed it over.[]
“Avery, can we please talk?“[]
“Sorry, I can’t chat during work hours.“]

“Then after work…“[]
“After work I need to rest.” I cut him off and handed him his change. “Enjoy your coffee.”
Then I turned to help the next customer.
He stood there for ages. Coffee in his hands, hadn’t taken a single sip. Just watched me.[]
His eyes looked so sad and lost, like some abandoned puppy.[]
But so what? When he threw me away, did he give a damn about how I felt?]
Dylan didn’t leave. He checked into the motel across the street.]]

He came to the shop every single day. Ordered one coffee, then sat there for hours. Never said a word, just watched me.]
My manager caught on pretty quick. “Avery, who is that guy? You know him?“]
“Classmate from high school.“]]
“Doesn’t look like just a classmate to me,” she said meaningfully.[]
I didn’t explain. Some things are too complicated for people to get.[]
Dylan’s presence didn’t change my routine. I kept doing my job like normal.]
But sometimes I caught pieces of his phone calls.[]
“Mom, I found her. She won’t talk to me. But I’m not giving up.“]
Another time, it sounded like he was talking to Madison.
“Stop calling me! I told you to leave me alone!” His voice was so loud it made other customers jump.]
“What do you mean I’m crazy?“]
“I’m not crazy! I just want the most important person in my life back!“[]
“Go to hell!”
He slammed his phone down so hard it cracked. Then he buried his head in his hands, shoulders shaking.]
Customers started whispering.[]
“Is that guy mental or something?“]
“He’s freaking me out.“]]
“Maybe we should call someone?“]]
I walked over, keeping my voice steady. “Sir, you’re disturbing other customers.“[]
