When I sat down at the table, I realized my coworker had lied to me.]]
This wasn’t a farewell dinner for me at all.]]
It was a business dinner between Harrison’s company and Damon!]
My coworker said they tricked me into coming because my name was still on some proposal they’d sent to Damon.[]
Plus Harrison wanted me there too.]]
Said since I’d lied to him using Damon’s name before, if they could get me to this kind of meeting, they had to.[]
So they came up with this scheme.
I was too speechless to even get angry.[]
Damon and I sat at opposite ends of the table, neither looking at the other.[]

He was radiating “pissed off, stay away” energy.[]

After realizing I’d been tricked, I really wanted to flip the table and storm out.]

I poured myself a full glass.]
Everyone looked at me, and Damon glanced at me for the first time tonight.]]

The alcohol hit me and my brain got fuzzy for a second.[]
I steadied myself.]]
Poured another glass.[]
A coworker nearby couldn’t help speaking up.[]
“Elowen, we haven’t even started eating yet, you shouldn’t drink like that…”
I ignored him.
After recovering, drank the second glass too.
I’m not usually much of a drinker.[]
Two shots of hard liquor hitting my system.[]
This time felt even more intense than before.]]
When I opened my eyes again, everything was blurry.[]
I looked at Damon.]
He was looking at me too.[]
I could tell his expression was complicated.]
But I couldn’t see clearly.[]

The private room went dead silent.[]

Some annoying coworker spoke first: “Haha, Elowen’s so obsessed with chasing Harrison she’s lost it.“[]
Then scattered laughter started around the room.]]
Harrison looked at me with a dark expression.[]
“Can’t control your mouth? Put the drink down!“]

Damon, who’d been silent all night, let out a cold laugh.[]
“She was calling me.“[]
“Why the hell do you even care?”
