Chapter 12
Spent some pretty shameless days at home glued to Damon.[]
He was bright and energetic every day.[]
I was bedridden every day.[]
While doing my usual corpse impression at home, I suddenly got a call from an old coworker.[]
A girl I’d worked with since starting at the company.[]
She got straight to the point.]
“Elowen, didn’t think you were really serious about quitting for good.“[]
I answered weakly.[]
“Yep.”
She sighed.
“Well, we’ve all been missing you. If you’re really not coming back, a few of us wanted to take you out for dinner. Like a farewell thing.”
Didn’t see any problem with that.]
“Sure, just send me the time and place.“[]
After agreeing, it hit me.]
“Which people? Harrison won’t be there, right?”
Mentioning Harrison, she got evasive.[]
“You were technically his direct report, so we can’t really not invite him…]
“But he’s so busy, probably won’t even show…”
She seemed worried I’d back out.]}
But thinking about it, so what if Harrison was there?
Just a stranger now.]
“Fine then ”
I was totally chill about it.
At least I thought I was.]
Chapter 12
But…
On the day of the dinner, Damon mentioned he had a business dinner that night.[]
Then asked if I wanted to go out to eat.[]
I shamefully hemmed and hawed.[]
“I’m also going out… dinner with friends.“[]
“Which friends?“]
“Just old coworkers, you don’t know them.“[]
“Not a single one I know?“]]
Nope.”
I denied it pretty firmly.[]
Damon stared at me for a long moment.[]
“Okay.“[]
Then turned and left.[]
I knew I shouldn’t feel guilty about hiding this.[]
But he was someone I’d chased so obviously for so long.]
Mentioning him to my current husband… just felt awkward.[]
Besides, he probably wouldn’t even show.[]
Just one dinner, it’d be over quick![]
However…]
When I arrived at the restaurant address any coworker gave me.]]
I saw Damon’s car.]
My first instinct was to run.[]
But that car seemed like it was specifically waiting for me.
The window rolled down immediately
Revealing Damon’s face
The moment our eyes met, I knew I was screwed.]
Chapter 12
His cold voice drifted out.[]
“Wifey.“]
“You’re having dinner with friends here too?“]]
I wiped nonexistent sweat from my forehead.
“Yeah…”
Before I could figure out how to explain, Damon nodded toward the entrance.]
“The coworkers you mentioned–wouldn’t happen to be them, would it?“[]
I followed his gaze.]
Sure enough, it was my coworker and her group.]]
As if trying to make sure I died, she jumped up and waved at me.[]
“Elowen! Over here, over here!”
I thought I could’ve explained all this.]
If Harrison hadn’t been standing in the back.]
When Damon spoke again, his voice was full of disappointment.[]
“Ellie ”
“Why did you lie to me?”
My palms were sweating.]
“It’s not like that, hubby, let me explain…“]
But Damon didn’t patiently listen like he usually did.]
He got out from the other side of the car.}
Watching him walk away on those long legs. I almost crying
