Never thought things between Damon and me could get awkward.[]
Leaning against my floor–to–ceiling window at home, feeling bummed.[]
Even though we were both trying to keep things normal, this weird tension suddenly appeared between us.]]

Damon was great, treated me amazingly, and I really liked him too.
So why did being with him still feel so far away?
Lost in thought when my mom suddenly called.[]
She was practically shouting the second I picked up.[]
“Honey, have you really been dating Damon Cross this whole time?“]
I quietly turned the volume down.]
“Yeah.”
Mom was breathing heavily on the other end.[]
“Sweetie, why didn’t you tell Moni sooner?“]
I pouted.
“You might not have believed me anyway.“[]
“Plus we haven’t made it official yet, so I didn’t mention it.“[]
Mom got all excited.[]
“Not official? You trying to hide things from Mom again?“]
“Honey, I did my homework before calling you this time!“]
“That Damon Cross has been crazy about you forever! How could you not be official?“]

Mom made several hmph sounds.[]
“Exactly.”
“Your aunt couldn’t help asking Damon’s nephew how things were going with you, and the poor kid looked miserable, said his uncle wouldn’t let him go and went himself instead! Nearly gave me and your aunt heart attacks!“[]
“Then I remembered what you told me, and it all clicked.“[]
“But we couldn’t figure out why someone like Damon would steal his nephew’s blind date.“[]
“So we did some digging–asked all the ladies, old friends, finally pieced it together.“[]
I was confused as hell.[]

Mom sounded smug.
“Let me tell you everything.“[]

“The Cross family aunt said Damon’s been like a monk for years, but there was one weird period–start of some college şemester. Guess what? That’s when my precious daughter became famous dancing at the welcome party!“]]

“But the real proof is those two doll figurines in his room for years. The girl doll has ‘EH‘ carved under the base… your initials! Can’t be that much of a coincidence!“]
“There’s so many more details. His nephew said when his uncle heard about the blind date with you, his face went black as thunder, scared that kid to death…“[]
The more Mom talked, the more shocked I got.[]
With that many coincidences… they really weren’t coincidences anymore.[]
Plenty of guys liked me in college.]]
But I was so obsessed with Harrison back then, I was cold to everyone who pursued me.]
If Damon was one of them…]
I probably wasn’t very nice to him.[]
And he still care enough to get my graduation photo?]
Thinking about how he acted around me…[]

So when I started getting attached to him, I kept trying to be rational about it.[]
