Chapter 14
Evelyn’s smile froze for a moment before she said, “She had unfortunate luck. A few years ago, she was in an accident… she’s no longer with us.”
Amanda sneered inwardly. Unfortunate luck? Yes–she was unfortunate,
Unfortunate enough to end up with a “mother” like Evelyn.
For all those years, she’d lived like a stray dog.
Her smile carried a trace of cool detachment. But if one looked closely, hate churned beneath her calm surface like molten lava. Her voice remained composed and measured. “That’s quite unfortunate. Same name, but different fates.”
Evelyn sneered in her heart. You were both orphans–same fate. You just don’t know yet, but you’ll be a widow soon.
That thought pleased her. As long as her daughter married Barry, one day she’d be the mistress of the entire Schmidt family.
Evelyn glanced at Amanda. Though her expression was calm and her words neither haughty nor humble, Evelyn couldn’t shake a strange feeling as if, despite her serene smile, a violent storm was raging invisibly around her.
There was an invisible pressure that made Evelyn uncomfortable. After a few minutes of small talk, she found an excuse to leave and took Carol with her.
Once the mother and daughter were gone, Amanda immediately began to cough. Taking advantage of the servants‘ momentary distraction, she quickly slipped upstairs to her room. Red rashes were already beginning to spread across her skin.
She was highly allergic to lilies–just the scent was enough to trigger coughing and
Fortunately, she had always been prepared. Barry knew about her allergy, too. She always carried her own specially formulated antihistamine–a drug she’d developed herself with remarkable results.
Amanda drank a glass of water and took the medication, then sank onto the sofa, waiting for the drug to take effect
A few minutes later, she finally began to feel better.
Amanda pulled out her phone and sent a message to Tara
(Amanda): Tara, I just saw Evelyn and her daughter. After leaving the Schmidt estate, with Evelyn’s personality, she’ll definitely head to the casino. Be ready on your end.
[Tara]: Got it, sis. I’ll report back later.
[Amanda]: Mhm. Be careful
[Tara Aye aye, boss!
At that moment, outside the Schmidt estate’s front gate, a sleek black car was parked Inside were three identical children–triplets–and a girl in a black hoodie sitting in the driver’s seat. She wore sunglasses, chewed gum, and had the streetwise swagger of a tough older sister. Cool and fierce.
Tod stared at the heavily guarded Schmidt estate gale security tortured his tiny, genius mind.
.Surveillance camems covered every angle with no blind:
The impenetrable
He tilted his head and asked Tara, “Tara, does the Schmidt estate have a dog hole?”
Tara paused mid–chew, narrowing her eyes at the little dumpling beside her. “Tod, is crawling through dog holes the only idea you can come up with
Tod’s big eyes swirled with thought. Beneath his handsome brows, his jet–black eyes gleamed with frustration.
“It’s been three days, and I still can’t crack the Schmidt estate’s security system. The moment I try to hack in, I get caught. So now l’in just thinking about crawling in through a dog hole to find Mommy!”
Tara narrowed her eyes. It was true–Benjamin himself had built the Schmidt family’s security system. She had tried breaching it before too. It was seriously tough.

Ted rested his chin on his hands, his big eyes blank and spiritless. “I haven’t seen Mommy in half a month.”
Terry’s bright eyes dimmed as well. He hugged his milk bottle tightly and took a sip. It was fragrant, but.. it wasn’t the formula Mommy made. It didn’t taste good at all. “I wonder if Mommy’s being bullied…”
Tara glanced at the three little rascals in the backseat–filial, clever, and freakishly gifted.
These were true prodigies.
And they were always trying to guilt–trip her into having babies herself!
She couldn’t help but gently lecture them, “My darlings, remember–of all trades, studying is the noblest. Let’s stop this nonsense and just go home and hit the books, okay?”
She was trying to get Tod to give up on the dog hole idea. What if there really was a dog behind it, jaws wide open, ready to chomp?
Just as she finished speaking, she saw the Wilson family’s car pulling out of the Schmidt estate.
Tara’s lips curved into a cold smile. “Kids, buckle up. We’re rolling out.”
She started the car and tailed the Wilson family’s vehicle from a distance.
