Chapter 1
My brother’s best friend Nathan Atlante took My V–card and made me pregnant. []
Meanwhile, his long–lost crush Rebecca Castillo who dumped him years ago–had come back.]]
Nathan scoffed dismissively: “How dare she showed her face here after disappearing without a word back then.“]
My brother Hunter Castillo’s gaze was even more distant: “She doesn’t deserve to be my sister. My one–and–only sister is you. Jessica Valence–the one we got back three years ago.”
I did believed them at all.
Until a video of me being abused by my adoptive parents was posted online.]]
I had an instant panic attack, trembling as I sought out the two people I trusted most.
But outside their office door, I heard Rebecca’s sweet and soft voice.
“Hunter, Nathan, wasn’t posting that video a bit too much… especially since Jessica is pregnant now?”
Hunter’s response came without hesitation: “That’s exactly we took advantage of her pregnancy. They say pregnancy makes women more loving and softer, but she was still cruel enough to keep you from coming home.“]]
Nathan was equally indifferent, letting out a cold laugh.[]
“Don’t worry about her. Our bond of twenty–plus years is something she could never replace. Besides, she’s always been soft–hearted–she won’t do anything to hurt the baby.”
My fingernails dug deep into my palms as the truth finally hit me. Like lost in mind, I walked away in a daze.
A taxi pulled up in front of me.

“Where to, miss?“|
I stared blankly for a moment, then parted my lips and spoke with eerie calm.
“The hospital.”
…I
After the doctor confirmed everything multiple times, I scheduled the abortion.j
Nathan’s call came through right after, but instead of picking up instantly like I always did, I just watched it ring until it stopped. Then Hunter’s phone started buzzing.]
Their calls kept going back and forth–they actually looked pretty worried about
- me.
I forced a bitter smile and finally answered.[]
Both of them let out a relieved breath at the same time.[]
“Jessica, you really scared us! Don’t worry about that video online–we’re already getting it taken down.” Their voices were rushed and panicked, Nathan was so nervous he was practically gasping for air.
For a second, I nearly lost it: If you fucking hate me so much, aren’t you exhausted putting on this act?
But the words died in my throat. I just mumbled a quiet “mm–hmm.“[]
Nathan caught on that something was off. “Are you okay?“]}]
My brother blamed me in a rare tone when I stayed silent: “Don’t just disappear like that again. Mom and Dad entrusted you to me, which means you’re my responsibility.“]
I let out a hollow laugh. So spreading your real sister’s trauma all over the internet was being fucking “responsible.“]
The year Mom had ine, she was in the same hospital as the Valences. However, Connor and Delilah were miserable old bastards who didn’t want their daughter suffering with them, so they switched me out.
That started eighteen years of nightmare for me.[]
It wasn’t until Mom died that anyone discovered I’d been swapped. Dad immediately brought me back and we moved abroad for good.
Rebecca threw her tantrums, and finally dumped Nathan–who was crazy about her–to run off with some race car driver.
Nathan was completely shattered. That night he got drunk and grabbed me when I brought him water to sober up.

He wasn’t that drunk, and I was stone sober. But we both got lost in the romantic dream anyway.
But three years later, I finally woke up from the dream. Turns out I was the only one who got lost in that dream.
When I came back from the memory, the car Nathan had sent to take me back at the Castillo Villa was waiting outside and the staff greeted me with their usual respect:
“Miss Valence.”
I stopped dead in my tracks. Right–I was still Jessica Valence, not Jessica Castillo.
I’d actually asked about changing my last name back once. Dad was all for it, but Hunter and Nathan both shot it down.
“Jessica Valence sounds perfect. It’s where you came from–whether you change it or not, it doesn’t really matter.”
I did believed them back then.
But now I finally got it. It was never fucking about “remember where you came from–they just rejected me.
They were sending a message to everyone in their own subtle but obvious way that:
Rebecca Castillo was still the only family they’d ever acknowledge.
And I–Jessica Valence would always be an outsider.
But I was done giving a damn anymore.
