He wrapped his jacket around me.
“Don’t worry. I’m getting you out.”
Sirens wailed across the prison.
Clark carried me through gunfire. Our blood left a trail behind us.
“Put me down… you don’t have to…” My voice was barely audible.
He didn’t say a word. Just ran faster.
We hit a dead end. Flashlights lit up the walls.
Clark pulled me close.
“Heidi, I lo-”
Boom.
The blast swallowed his words. He covered me with his body as the heat rushed in.
Back in the now.
‘What is it?”
Clark wiped my cheeks–I hadn’t even noticed the tears.

The same finger he’d lost for me.
“Just remembered something.” I smiled through the tears and leaned in.
The doctor showed up soon after and patched me up.
When he saw my back, Clark’s fists tightened till his knuckles cracked.
“I’ll make them pay.”

His eyes looked like a storm was coming.
I squeezed his hand.
“Don’t get your hands dirty. Let the law handle it.

After the doctor left, Clark insisted on applying the ointment himself.
It was cool on my skin, but his fingers burned as they moved over each scar.
“Does it hurt?” His voice was low, tight with rage.
I shook my head, but he kept going.
“When I found you!
last time… you were hurt too…”
His voice just stopped–like the memory hit too hard.
I turned and wrapped my arms around him, head resting on his shoulder.
“It’s over now. All of it.”
He held me like he never wanted to let go.
“This time, no one’s laying a finger on you.”
After Simon and Nancy got hauled off, I really thought it was over.
