Chapter 2
Olivia’s heart clenched tight.
She had never intended for them to find out about her cancer. But now, thanks to the doctor’s
words, they’d heard everything.
Her fingers gripped the edge of the blanket, knuckles white. Somewhere deep down, an absurd
flicker of hope stirred.
Now that they knew, what would their reaction be? Would they finally regret it? Would they feel
even a shred of guilt? Would they hold her the way they used to and whisper, “Don’t be afraid,
Olivia“?
“Ring”
The shrill ringtone cut through the moment, slicing off the doctor’s explan
Ethan answered the phone, only to hear Vivian sobbing on the other end.
“Ethan… I fell. It hurts so much…”
His expression changed instantly. “I’m on my way!”
Neither he nor Sebastian said another word. They simply tossed the doctor a command,
“Get a nurse aide to look after her. Use the best meds. Make sure the blood loss is replenished.”
And then they left without a backward glance.
The doctor opened his mouth, wanting to call after them, but they had already disappeared down
the corridor.
With a sigh, he stepped into the room and approached Olivia’s bed.
“Miss Sinclair, the cancer’s at an advanced stage. You need to start chemotherapy immediately.”
He paused, then added gently,
“Mr. Carrington and Mr. Sinclair didn’t seem to hear the full diagnosis. Would you like to tell them yourself? They might want to be by your side in what little time you have left.”
Olivia let out a soft, bitter laugh. A tear slipped down her cheek in silence.

“No need,” she said quietly.
“They don’t care.”
The doctor hesitated, then gave a helpless nod and left the room.
The next few days were pure agony.
The painkillers were losing their effect. Olivia curled into herself on the hospital bed, her hospital gown soaked in cold sweat.
And just then, as if the pain weren’t enough, her phone rang.
Ethan’s voice was ice–cold.
“It’s just a little injury. How long are you planning to stay in the hospital? Your punishment isn’t over. Get back here.”
Olivia’s hands trembled around the phone.
She knew they were only rushing her home so they could continue tormenting her while there was still time.
Fine.
Let them.
She, too,
wanted to know once she was broken beyond recognition and lying cold and lifeless and what kind of expressions would they wear?
She signed her own discharge papers, took a handful of painkillers, and returned to the place they still dared to call a “home.”
But the moment she stepped inside the estate, the housemaids blocked her.
“Miss Sinclair, Mr. Carrington and Mr. Sinclair said you’ve been in the hospital for days. God knows what bacteria or viruses you might’ve picked up. We need to disinfect you first, for Miss Locke’s safety.”
Before she could react, several maids grabbed her and threw her into the disinfection pool.
“What the-!”
The chemicals stung her wounds like acid. Her body convulsed in agony. Blood seeped from her

…
reopened injuries, staining the water red.
Panicked, the maids screamed and ran off to call for Ethan and Sebastian.
By the time Ethan rushed in, Olivia was half–unconscious from the pain, her face deathly pale and drenched in cold sweat. Her lips were bitten bloody.
His pupils contracted. Instinctively, he reached out to pull her out.
“Ethan!” Sebastian grabbed his wrist, holding him back. His voice was low. “Did you forget our
plan?”
Ethan’s hand froze in midair.
“I know you still care about her,” Sebastian said quietly, his tone terrifyingly calm. “But she’s only
got a month left.”
“She needs to suffer enough to never dare hurt Lillian again.”
He paused, then added with a touch of softness,
“I’m her brother. I feel for her too. But for Lillian’s sake, we have to be ruthless.”
Ethan’s fingers trembled, but in the end, he withdrew his hand.
Soaked in blood–tinted water, Olivia watched through a haze as they both turned and walked away.
What a joke.
She was dying.
And all they cared about was whether or not she’d hurt Lillian again in the future.
She spent the entire night submerged in that chemical bath.
By dawn, the maids came to drag her out like a piece of garbage and dumped her back into her
room.
Curled up in bed, Olivia trembled with every breath.
Only when the pain dulled slightly did she force herself to sit up. She began packing her belongings.
If she was going to die, she wanted to leave cleanly. She didn’t want to leave behind even a trace of
herself in this place.

That way, maybe in the next life, she’d never cross paths with them again.
She pulled out all the things she had once cherished: old photographs, journals, the gifts Ethan had given her.
One by one, she threw them into the fireplace.
The flames devoured the fragments of her past, just as they devoured what little remained of her.
Just then, the door creaked open suddenly.
