Chapter 10
He drove like a madman all the way there.
Flashes of memories about Olivia kept rushing through his mind, the way she’d looked at him
lately, void of love; how she barely reacted anymore to the torment he and Sebastian had put her
through. Then there was the incident at the hospital when she coughed up blood, even from a light
bump.
The painkillers she always carried in her purse.
The vague words from the doctor, the ones they hadn’t quite caught at the time…
Now, every detail came back in vivid, excruciating clarity.
It had all been there, right in front of him.
By the time he pulled up in front of the police station, his knuckles were white from gripping the steering wheel.
But now, faced with the doors, he couldn’t bring himself to go
- in.
He stood there stiffly for a long time until his limbs went numb. Only then did he finally force himself to lift up his head and open the door.
A staff member came to greet him and led him to an office.
The officer handed him a small bag.
“These were Miss Sinclair’s personal effects.”
Inside were a medical report and a flash drive.
Ethan unfolded the report, and his gaze landed on the words at the bottom:
[Late–stage Cancer]
The words pierced his chest like a blade.
He seemed unable to withstand the shock and his body swayed slightly, and the hand holding the thin sheet of paper trembled uncontrollably.
He had no idea what was on the flash drive, so he stuffed it into his pocket without thinking.

…
“Where is Olivia?”
It took him a long while to choke out the question, his voice hoarse and barely audible.
They brought him to the coroner’s examination room.
“When we arrived, she was already gone. According to surveillance footage, Miss Sinclair jumped off the bridge around 8 PM. Her body wasn’t discovered until 11 PM by a fisherman nearby.”
She lay on the cold metal table, a white sheet covering her. Ethan stared in a daze, his head
pounding like something inside him was being torn apart.
He stood frozen in front of the table, unable to summon the courage to lift the sheet.
In his heart, he kept praying, begging that it wasn’t her. That it was a mistake.
But the dress peeking out from under the sheet told a brutal truth.
It was her.
She’d worn the same dress they had lovingly picked out for her and then jumped straight into the
river without hesitation.
He didn’t know how much time passed before he finally reached out and pulled the sheet away.
Olivia’s body was soaked. Her face was pale and lifeless.
Every ounce of hope in Ethan’s chest shattered.
Olivia was truly gone. It wasn’t a lie, and it wasn’t some cruel joke.
His childhood best friend. The girl he’d grown up with. The woman he’d once held like treasure. She
was gone.
Ethan couldn’t take it anymore. He collapsed at the edge of the platform, clutching her cold, lifeless
hand, and broke down in sobs.
“I’m sorry, Olivia. I’m so, so sorry.”
“Please wake up, okay? I’ll take you to the hospital–I’ll get you the best doctors, the best treatment.”
“When you’re better, we’ll get married, okay?”

Beside him, Sebastian also collapsed, tears brimming in his eyes.
“I was wrong, Olivia. I’m so sorry… I was wrong.”
Those were the words she had longed to hear most, but now, she lay there motionless, no longer
able to respond.
The staff had seen this kind of thing before. When Ethan’s sobs finally subsided, someone gently
pushed a box of tissues toward him.
“Did she… leave any message for me?” he asked, voice shaking.
“I’m sorry. There were no letters or recordings found. But…”
The officer paused, then added, “Her last phone call before she passed was to you. Are you sure she didn’t say anything?”
Nothing.
Ethan clutched his head in agony.
She hadn’t left him a single word, not even a goodbye.
Did she really hate him that much?
Hate him so deeply that she couldn’t spare him even a single word, just left behind a cold, lifeless
body and called it a surprise.
Hate him enough to throw away all those years they had shared.
Hate him so much she wanted nothing more to do with him, not even the smallest connection.
Ethan had no idea how he got through the paperwork or how he managed to bring her ashes home.
He slumped onto the couch, staring blankly at the urn.
It wasn’t until the phone rang that he snapped out of it.
“Hello, is this Mr. Carrington?” a voice said. “This is the groundskeeper from Willowrest Cemetery. Miss Sinclair reserved a plot here some time ago and listed you as the contact. She asked that we call you today to arrange for her ashes to be placed in the plot she selected.”
Ethan hung up without a word.

He didn’t move.
He looked around the room, once filled with their shared memories, now hauntingly empty.
The photos of the two of them on the shelves and the table had long since vanished.
The cushions they had chosen together on the sofa were discarded, and everything related to Olivia had disappeared without a trace from this space.
He unlocked his phone, wanting to see Olivia one more time, but after scrolling through the entire album, he couldn’t find a single photo of them together.
His album used to be fill
