Chapter 68
“Once Tessa hits rock bottom and ends up on the streets, she’ll come crawling back for help.” Come back to them?
That was never going to happen.”
After all, just before returning to collect my things, I had already accepted Charles’s proposal.
The wedding was set for three days later.§
Back at his villa, Charles looked a bit hesitant, his eyes flicking uneasily.
“Tessa, to be honest, what Peter said earlier wasn’t entirely wrong.“>
“Our Xavier family is indeed facing a serious financial crisis. Bankruptcy is very likely.”
“The wedding hasn’t happened yet. If you want to back out now, there’s still time.”
His honesty moved me.§
But I simply tightened my grip on his hand.
“Don’t worry, they say my birth chart is extremely auspicious. that I bring fortune and ward off misfortune.“} “Maybe once we’re married, your financial problems will magically resolve themselves.“}
Charles chuckled softly, clearly not taking my words too seriously. But then he pulled me into a firm embrace. “Tessa, I promise you, no matter what happens, I won’t let you suffer even a hint of injustice.“>
The wedding proceeded as planned.”
What I didn’t expect was to run into Peter at the hotel, just as I entered wearing my custom wedding dress.
He was dressed in a sharp suit, holding Yvonne’s hand. His eyes flickered with mockery.
“Tessa, didn’t you leave so decisively?“}
“What’s this, then? Heard I was getting married today and showed up in a wedding dress to steal the groom?“}
His words drew the attention of nearby guests, who began whispering and turning our way.”
Peter stared at me without blinking, as if he had been waiting for me to make a scene.}
But the next moment, his smug expression froze.
Charles was approaching from behind, steady and composed.
Peter’s face darkened.”
“Why is he here?“}
I lifted my gaze and replied coolly, “Charles is my groom. Why shouldn’t he be here?“}
Without sparing him another glance, I turned and walked into the hotel.
But Peter seemed to lose all composure. He suddenly charged toward me, shouting, “Tessa! You love me the most! Why are you marrying him?!”
Yvonne panicked and tried to pull him back, only to be shoved to the ground in the scuffle.
I looked at Peter’s distorted face and smiled faintly.
“Mr. Arthur, I never said I would marry you.”>
Peter stood frozen, stunned.}
“No… Impossible…”
“In our last life, you clearly… loved me.“>
His emotions boiled over, and in his frenzy, he stumbled, tumbling down the stairs. Blood trickled from his forehead.
At that moment, his assistant burst in, panicked.
“Mr. Arthur, something’s wrong! Several of our major projects just collapsed. Our stock price is in freefall!”
Peter felt the world spinning, his assistant’s voice blaring in his ears. But amid the chaos of the wedding hall, he couldn’t make out a word.”
All he could see was the image of me, dressed in white, walking farther and farther away..
“Tessa…”
That was the last thing he uttered before everything went black.
When he woke up, he heard his assistant and grandfather’s voices outside the room urgent and grim.
“Mr. Arthur, the company is in critical condition. Major shareholders are pulling out. If we don’t find a solution in three days…“}
“We might go bankrupt!”
“That’s not all. The doctor just gave the results, years of drinking and sleepless nights have taken their toll. You’ve developed advanced–stage stomach cancer.“}
Mr. Arthur staggered backward from the shock, nearly collapsing to the ground.”
