“Sawyer, investments are supposed to generate returns, right? If the project isn’t profitable, I’m pulling out. What’s the problem?”
He paused, his tone mellowing slightly.
“Who says the firm isn’t profitable?”
“Then where’s my cut? Haven’t seen a penny in dividends.”
His bluster deflated.
“Come on, we’re married. It’s all marital assets anyway–what’s mine and yours?”
I let out a cold laugh, dripping with sarcasm.
His voice pitched higher again.
“You’re doing this because I lost your case, aren’t you? You think losing feels good for me? Instead of comforting your husband, all you care about is money?”
“Aria, your resort didn’t maintain safety equipment properly, and a guest had a medical emergency that went undetected. That’s on you. You don’t even need those millions–why make this a thing?”
“Look, I already poached their lawyer for our firm. Don’t worry, we’ll win way more cases now and make serious bank. Just wire five hundred thousand right now–we can’t look like deadbeats who can’t make payroll,
Just as I was about to respond, I heard a soft voice in the background.
“Maybe I should explain things to Ms. Channing? You should eat something–you haven’t had anything since this morning. It’s bad for your stomach.”
I smiled.
“Mr. Blake, you better go eat before you starve and try to bill me for medical expenses.”
I hung up and blocked his number.
Finally, some peace.
I drove out to a countryside retreat to clear my head.
But my phone kept buzzing with messages from firm employees, all asking about their paychecks.
Sawyer had obviously put the word out that I was the villain.
These people weren’t exactly polite about it either.

I blocked every single number.
Threaten me? They wish.
I took my time driving, stopping to enjoy the scenery along the way.
By the time I reached the retreat, it was dinner time.
I’d just finished checking in when my assistant called.
“Ms. Channing, your husband just withdrew a million from the company account. Said you approved it.”
My grip tightened on the phone. “He what? It’s already gone?”
“Yes.
I almost hurled my phone across the room.
The audacity of this man.
Using my name to steal from my own accounts!
I took two deep breaths to center myself.
“Freeze all joint accounts immediately. Stocks, funds, everything.”
“Then call the police.”
My assistant hesitated. “Ms. Channing, involving law enforcement will blow this up. The company has other investors–maybe
I should keep this quiet while you get your husband to return the money? Minimize the fallout?”
I thought it over and decided to head back to the city.
By then, my phone pinged with a notification from Quinn’s INS:
[Boss is treating us to celebratel First time at a 3–Stars–Michelin!]
The video showed everyone from the firm dining at a place that runs ten thousand per person.

Guess whose money funded that little party.
Without any hesitation, I drove straight to the restaurant.
When I arrived, they were just finishing up and planning to hit a second location.
With a sharp drift and a sudden brake, I skidded to a stop just ten centimeters in front of the crowd..
Several people screamed.
Quinn recognized me and stepped in front of my car.
“Are you trying to kill us, Ms. Channing?”
Looking at her self–righteous expression, I just smiled coldly.
“Quinn Rivers-”
Sawyer emerged from settling the bill.
Quinn, who’d been acting so fearless a second ago, suddenly collapsed in front of my car.
“Sawyer, if you hadn’t come out, I might be dead right now.”
