On Emma’s birthday, I proposed to her, and we set our wedding date for the following spring.”
I promised to give her the most beautiful wedding.
Our marriage received overwhelming support from both families, who were thrilled with our partners and eager to provide us with the best of everything, even helping us try on wedding outfits at several shops.
While Emma was trying on wedding dresses, I went out to buy her favorite coffee. To my surprise, I ran into Ethan and Sophie outside.
Ethan was with a wealthy woman, and Sophie was chasing after him, confronting him angrily. “Ethan, how could you cheat on me? I’m working hard to pay off your debts while you’re out here kissing another woman! What do you think of me?” she shouted.}

Sophie smiled bitterly and replied, “You didn’t want a divorce when I wanted one; you dragged me into your financial mess. Now that you’ve found a rich woman, you want to leave me? Dream on, Ethan! I’m pregnant with your child. If you want a divorce, I won’t agree to it, so you won’t be able to divorce me.“>
The wealthy woman’s expression changed as she pushed Ethan away. “If you can’t get a divorce, then don’t expect me to be your mistress. If you ever do get divorced, then come find me.” With that, she grabbed her bag and got into a luxury car.
Ethan couldn’t catch up to her. He turned back to Sophie with a menacing look and said, “Sophie, if you ruin this for me, do you know what happens if I can’t pay my debts? I’ll go to jail! You’ll be left alone with a kid who won’t even know his father.”}

Ethan pushed her hard enough that she nearly fell. I rushed forward to steady her just in time.
Ethan looked at me in surprise and sneered, “Oh look, the old flame comes to the rescue! Still hung up on her? How about giving me a hundred grand? Then I’ll divorce her today. His words were laced with disdain.}
Sophie didn’t expect to see me there; tears streamed down her face as she collapsed into my arms. “Kyle, please help me!“}]
“I never imagined Ethan would turn out like this–drowning in debt and gambling more away instead of paying it off. He’s only thinking about quick money now; he even suggested selling our child for cash,” she cried.}
“He’s lost it; all he cares about is money now. Kyle, please save me!“>
I glared at Ethan and said coldly, “You know human trafficking is illegal; think carefully about your next moves.“>
I handed Sophie a business card. “This is for a friend of mine–a renowned lawyer who specializes in divorce cases. If you want a fresh start, reach out to him; it’s the least I can do for you.”

Sophie grabbed my arm desperately. “Kyle, don’t you remember our past? Does it mean nothing compared to what you have with Emma now? Does she know how crazy in love you were with me? How you searched the city for my favorite flowers or flew across the country just to see me?“}
I interrupted her frantic pleas, “Sophie, that was then. My life now revolves around Emma and will only include her moving forward. All those romantic gestures are reserved for her.“>>
“No one stays stagnant forever, Sophie. Wake up and think about what kind of life you want,” I concluded before turning back toward the bridal shop.
Emma emerged from the fitting room in her wedding dress, radiating happiness beneath the veil as she looked at me from afar and asked, “Do I look beautiful?”
I walked over to her and replied sincerely, “Yes, you’re the most beautiful bride I’ve ever seen.”

I first met Professor Kyle in his classroom. He was refined and articulate, and I thought, this must be what love at first sight feels like.
However, he had a girlfriend who was also the daughter of my mentor–beautiful and poised, they looked like a perfect couple together. I could only keep my admiration hidden deep inside.
Before I could even wait for their wedding, I heard the shocking news that it was called off. Sophie had reconciled with her ex–boyfriend the night before the wedding and shamelessly posted about it on Instagram.
I could only imagine how heartbroken Kyle must be; it was clear he really cared for Sophie.
Every time I saw my mentor, I would ask indirect questions about Kyle. It seemed like the professor and his wife sensed something, because one day at their home, Kyle arrived. The professor smiled and said, “Kyle, come meet my star student, Emma. If you have any questions, just ask your senior brother Kyle. I’m getting old and don’t have the energy to guide you through your thesis.”
I felt my face flush but tried to stay calm as I handed him my phone. “Kyle, let’s connect on phone number.”
Finally, I got Kyle’s number. During the half–hour he spent driving me back to my dorm, I felt like I was floating on air, my heart racing as if everything was a dream.§
Kyle was both a professor and an older brother–gentle and considerate. I bombarded him with questions every day; he probably knew my feelings but smiled and accepted them.
Eventually, I gathered the courage to ask him, “Kyle, would you be my boyfriend?” Luckily, he asked me the same thing at that moment. We exchanged smiles–was this what they meant by a connection of hearts?”
On my birthday, Kyle proposed to me at a campus music festival. I had no idea he could sing so beautifully! With the band playing in the background, he walked towards me singing love songs, making me feel like the most cherished princess in the world.”
