On the second day, I went to work as a
design manager.
The rumor mill was already on fire.
Ashley found a way to get back at me, saying
that “the new design manager has some
secrets”
“My brother is too innocent, and she is taking
advantage of him.”
“She isn’t good enough for our family, and
she’ll be gone soon!”
“Are we going to let someone like that order
us around? We should write a letter…”
People were looking at her like she was crazy.
One person told her to shut up. and that I
One person told her to shut up, and that I went to Stanford, and was the Chairman’s
daughter, and that I was running the
company.
“So what if they came from the same car? Stop trying to fantasize about nonsense. “Ashley, you are not a Jiang.”
All the workers were finally standing up to
Ashley, since she had been bullying them for so long.
“And you can’t even figure out the printer, you
are a disgrace.”
The whole lunchroom erupted in chaos.
Ashley ran into my room and started yelling.
“You’re so full of yourself. You’re so
obsessed with your last name.
“All you did was win the genetic lottery.
“Stanford is easy, just give them enough
money, and you’ll get in.”
I was relaxed and sipped on my coffee.
“Why shouldn’t I talk about it? I am not going to hide and let you slander me.
“You are not even related to this family, but
you are acting like it.”
Ashley’s face started getting dark. “You
shouldn’t assume that you can get away with everything.”

Chapter 2
“People are emotional. You’ve been out of the
country forever. Mom, Dad, and Jake have
probably moved on. This is just a phase for
them.”
She slammed her hand on my desk, a smug
look on her face. “Just you wait.”
Wait?
I was actually kind of stoked.
The next day at work, I was making coffee in the breakroom when Ashley suddenly shows
- up. Gone was the attitude from the day
before. She bites her lip, acting all pitiful. “Liz?”
I look her up and down. “You okay? Get hit in
the head or something?”
Ashley’s face twisted, but she didn’t bite.
Instead, she burst into tears. “I know, you hate me. I’m just some country bumpkin who’s never seen anything nice. I promise I’ll
stay out of your way from now on. Just don’t
come after me, okay?”
Ashley started crying, loud enough to draw a crowd. Everyone was staring, like they’d seen
a unicorn riding a skateboard.
I crossed my arms and watched for a minute.
Then it hit me: Dad was flying back from his
business trip today.
Perfect timing for Ashley to play the victim.
Ashley sobbed louder. “I know you’re the real Jiang family member, and I’m just some
charity case. You’re better than me. But I just
want to live my life. What’s wrong with that? Please, just leave me alone!”
She reached for my sleeve, like she was going to drop to her knees.
Just as she was about to go down, the
elevator doors opened, and Dad stepped out.
I took that opportunity, and then slapped Ashley across the face.
The sound “PA“, echoed across the room, and
everyone went silent.
I slowly pull back my hand, and smirk to
myself.
Since she wants to act, I will help her out.
Ashley was still tearing up, but then I saw my
Dad walk right towards her.
“Dad, it’s probably just a mistake, it is okay.”
She was begging for attention.
“Maybe I didn’t make myself clear, but I’m just some country bumpkin. So it’s my fault.
“If you are going to be mad, don’t be mad at
her. Actually, you should just let her rest for a few days, since we are working on something important.”
Ashley was acting nice.
Sure enough, my Dad frowned even harder, and I saw Ashley beam. Ashley grabbed my Dad’s arm, saying, “Hey, don’t worry about her, you are so generous…”
My Dad waved and shook her off. “She is my real daughter, it isn’t like I’m going to let you have your way“.
Ashley was stuck, and then said “I’m some
hillbilly…”
I just laughed and cut her off. “At least you’ve
said it five times now. You must be proud of
it.”
Ashley was all teary again. “It is not true, I’m
some child who-
Someone interrupted and said, “This is the
sixth time“.
My Dad paid her no mind and hugged me. “When did you get back?”
I tried to pull away, but my Dad talked to the other executives, saying, “This is Jiang Zhi, my daughter. Just graduated from Stanford“. He emphasized the “Stanford” part. “It’s not a big deal though.”
The executives took the cue, and tried to
please him.
“Oh Stanford! If my boy turns out half as
good as Jiang I will be happy.”
“Mr. Jiang, you are just being humble. Miss
Jiang is one of a kind!”
“She is perfect, capable, and beautiful.”
“Yes, and she got everything done at work, it
is so impressive.”
My Dad grinned, but said, “Okay you guys,
don’t praise her too much, that will go to her head“.
Everyone got louder, and Ashley got stuck in
the corner.
She yelled “It’s just Stanford, it is just a check“, but nobody heard her. Someone
grabbed her, yelling “You are not high enough to talk here“, and shoved her away.
I went back to the office, and my Dad tried to put on a stern face, but just said, “I know you don’t like her, but you can’t go around hitting people, you will get a reputation“.
I agreed, and asked what Dad thought. “That girl?”
My Dad rolled his eyes. “She is just here to
make your Mom happy“.
I started laughing, and he said, “If you don’t
want her around, she can leave.”
I shook my head, “I don’t mind giving her a
chance, or she can just burn herself”.
