Chapter 74
The silence in the room was deafening at that moment, heavy with shock and utmost disbelief. They were all too shocked to
say a word, their eyes fixed on Veronica who was still with the
guards.
“See? I told you that she was not the one you were looking for. You got the wrong person.” Scott spoke up, breaking the silence
in the room, his tone filled with conviction.
Even Steve, who was standing at a corner, couldn’t find the right
words. His expression showed that he was totally lost for words.
He found it shocking and surprising to believe that all the while
that the warriors had gone in search of Scott in the forest, he
had actually been with Veronica, and the little boy whom
Veronica was worried about when he found her, was actually
Scott.
“Unbelievable.” He muttered under his breath. “This is really
shocking.”
He recalled Veronica’s frantic concern for the little boy on that
day, and how she was really desperate to find him. How she was
worried that something bad had happened to him because he
went out looking for help on her behalf.
Chapter 74
His gaze darted towards Veronica, his expression warm. Then
his eyes slowly scanned the room, observing everyone’s
reaction. He could see through them all and he was so sure that
he could see a tiny bit of guilt in their eyes, and this made him
happy in a way.
Beta Richard straightened up and briskly walked towards Alpha
Marcus. He leaned towards him and whispered into his ear, “I
think we made a mistake. I don’t think she is who we think she
is.”
Elder Raymond suddenly cleared his throat, “So, what is the next
step? What do we do with her now?”
“Well, It’s already evident that she is not the spy, and she has
nothing to do with Shadow Moon.” Steve put in a word to
defend Veronica.
“Even at that, what you did was totally wrong.” Councillor
Maxwell Hill, Megan’s father interjected. “Bringing a total
stranger into the pack when you already know the rules and
how particular we are when it comes to strangers, was a really
wrong decision, in my opinion.”
“Exactly!” A member, Seth, spoke up in support, “It is totally
uncalled for.” Turning to Councillor Maxwell, he asked, “but
how come?”
Chapter 74
Looking confused, Councillor Maxwell asked him, “what so you
mean? How come what?”
“How come you know nothing about this whole thing?” Seth
asked again, throwing Councillor Maxwell into further
confusion.
“I don’t understand what you’re driving at, Seth. If there’s
anything you want to say to me, be direct.” Councillor Maxwell
said with a frown.
“It’s nothing.” Seth kept quiet and didn’t speak further.
“What do you mean ‘nothing‘?” Councillor Maxwell questioned,
his tone filled with complete displeasure, “You actually sounded
like you had something to say. Why are you strangely quiet
now?”
From his tone, It was obvious that Councillor Maxwell wasn’t
pleased by Seth’s action. He didn’t like the fact that Seth, who
was also a member of the council, was trying to come at him for
something he didn’t even know about.
Alpha Marcus cleared his throat and all attention was
immediately focused on him.
“Yes, Seth. Maxwell is actually right. If you have something on
your mind, why don’t you say it now that we are all here to hear
Chapter 74
it.”
“I’m just wondering how it is possible for him not to know anything about this whole issue when his daughter is Steve’s closest friend.” Seth’s words sounded like a bombshell landing
on the floor and exploding.
They all immediately began to exchange glances and whispered into each other’s hearing, while Maxwell looked so puzzled and
at the same time, having mixed feelings.
“I still don’t understand you.” Councillor Maxwell’s jaw clenched
as he spoke, “Are you trying to accuse my daughter and I?”
“I’m not trying to accuse you both. I’m just saying that it is quite
strange and almost unbelievable for you not to know about it.”
Seth said further and Maxwell clenched his fists in anger.
“I won’t sit back here and listen to you insult me.” Maxwell
uttered, his tone showing signs of anger.
“Insult you? How and when did I do that? I never said anything
insulting.” Seth said, looking surprised by what he heard.
“Don’t you know you’re indirectly accusing us of being traitors?”
Maxwell replied, his anger rising with every word.
“W… what?!” Seth exclaimed. He was taken aback by how
Councillor Maxwell read a meaning to what he had just said.
Chapter 74
Noticing the tense atmosphere, Alpha Marcus knew he had to
do something before it got out of hand in just a short moment.
“Calm down everyone, Silence!” He ordered, his voice
authoritative, and they all became quiet.
“Maxwell, you really can’t blame Seth in all of this. I think his
assumptions are quite right. We all know how close Megan is to
Steve, and how often she visits his house.” Alpha Marcus began
and hearing this, Steve’s head snapped in his father’s direction.
Noticing it, his father turned to him, saying, “What? Did you
actually think I don’t know much about your movements in this
pack? You think I know nothing about you because you think
you stay far away from me?” He smiled with a corner of his lip.
He then scoffed, and continued, “although I’m still surprised at
how no one noticed that you brought a complete stranger into
this pack and she has been staying in your house for weeks now,
but that is a story for another day.
He then turned back to the members, “As I was saying,” and
turned to Councillor Maxwell, “So, Maxwell, it will be very
difficult to not believe that she was also an accomplice.”

head.
“Have you asked her about it?” He asked him, but he shook his
Chapter 74
“I didn’t expect the whole case to turn out this way so I never asked her anything about it, but I highly doubt that she knows anything about it. I think I can trust my daughter on this one.”
Maxwell said, a bit confident.
“Hmmm! You can’t be so sure about it.” Seth whispered, but they
all heard him loud and clear. Councillor Maxwell glared at him
and he raised his hands in surrender.
“You think your daughter doesn’t have a hand in this?” Alpha
Marcus asked him, and Councillor Maxwell nodded
affirmatively.
“I’d advise that you shouldn’t be too sure about it, just like Seth
said.” Alpha Marcus replied, furrowing his brows.
“Alpha, I’m surprised that you’re taking Seth’s side on this.”
Maxwell complained with a frown.
“I’m not taking his side. I’m just being realistic. These children of
ours can sometimes be up to no good, especially with the things they do behind our backs.” Alpha Marcus answered him and he
sighed.
“I understand, but I trust my daughter. There is no way she’ll be
a party to all this and I won’t know about it.” Councillor
Maxwell said, speaking highly of his daughter.
Chapter 74
Beta Richard sighed loudly, “Bear in mind, that these offsprings
of ours are really secretive. In most cases, if they don’t tell you
anything, you won’t know.” Beta Richard said, buttressing the
point made by everyone else, but Councillor Maxwell was still
bent on sticking to his own point.
“Megan will never do a thing like that.” Councillor Maxwell said
firmly.
He believed so much in his daughter and in the fact that she’ll
never do such a thing.
“Well, there’s only one way to find out if she knows anything
about it or not.” Beta Richard said, shrugging.
“Which is?” Councillor Maxwell asked him and Beta Richard’s
eyes fell on Steve who was already looking guilty.
“Her best friend, right here. All we have to do is to ask him.” Beta
Richard replied, walking up to Steve.
As he approached Steve, he bit his lips in guilt because he knew
he couldn’t dare to lie about anything. If it was any other person
who asked him, he would have been more than ready to tell a lie
and cover it up, protecting Megan, but he couldn’t lie to Beta
Richard because he was one of the few people who trusted and
believed in him.
Chapter 74
“I know you won’t lie to me, Steve. I want you to think about
what you want to say. Think about your answer perfectly
before you give an answer. Is that clear?” Beta Richard asked,
with his hand pressing on Steve’s shoulder.
“So, tell me, does Megan know about her?” He asked, gesturing
with his head to refer to Veronica.
Steve bit his lip as his guilty eyes travelled round the room and fell on Veronica, who was looking as guilty as he was.
It wasn’t his intention to put Megan in trouble, especially after all she had done for him and how well she had helped him take
care of Veronica.
It pained him so much that he would not only put her in a tough
spot but she was definitely going to be in trouble with her dad if
he decided to tell the truth.
His eyes scanned the room one more time, observing every
expectant eyes waiting for his answer at that moment.
Getting impatient with Steve’s silence and unwillingness to talk,
Beta Richard’s out pressure on Steve’s shoulder, “Answer the
question, Steve. We don’t have all day.”
“Does Megan know about her?” He asked Steve for the last time.
Slowly throwing his head backwards, Steve closed his eyes as he

finally answered, throwing them all off balance.
