Chapter 70
That night, the guards on night patrol had decided to knock
doors randomly, not announcing their presence, while being as
strategic and quiet as possible to avoid any suspicions. They
didn’t expect to get any response from Steve’s house since they
knew he wasn’t in and they were about to leave when they
heard the door being unlocked.
They had coincidentally knocked thrice, making Veronica think
that it was Megan at the door. Hence why she opened the door
without asking any questions.
Seeing the guards, Veronica knew she couldn’t have been in
more serious trouble. She knew she was really done for. How
and where was she going to begin to explain who she was,
where she was from and how she got into the pack, talk less of
how she got into Steve’s house.
A raging and intense battle with her emotions immediately
began inside of her.
“How could I have been so stupid? How couldn’t I figure out that
it wasn’t Megan who was at the door?” She thought to herself,
feeling overwhelmed.
Chapter 70
“Now I’m in trouble. I’m in a big mess. And not just me, but I have also put Megan and most especially, Steve in trouble.” Veronica’s
voice rang in her own head.
“People who have helped me so far. I’m really good at running other people’s lives. Such a cursed wolf who has nothing going well for her, apart from ruining other people’s already–good life.” She cursed herself in her thoughts.
“If it wasn’t that I was definitely cursed, I probably wouldn’t be here today, but what do I do now? Is this the end?”
“Who are you?” The guards growled at her fiercely, snapping her out of her thoughts, and at that moment Veronica’s tongue felt like it was tied as she couldn’t find any words to explain
herself.
“Are you deaf? Can’t you talk? I said who the hell are you and
what are you doing here?” He yelled angrily at her and she just
stood there unable to say anything.
Hearing the sound, different pack members began to peep from their houses and their windows to see what was actually going
- on.
“Captain!!!” The guard who had found Veronica, shouted, “we
have found someone. I think this is the spy we have been
looking for.” He added, and immediately the rest of the guards
Chapter 70
ran towards them.
Seeing Veronica, especially her silver–whitish hair, which was
previously tied into a tight bun, now flowing over her shoulders,
they immediately knew she wasn’t one of their pack members,
and they immediately assumed she was a spy and possibly the
one who was giving information to the rival packs.
“Isn’t this Master Steve’s house?” Captain Murphy asked,
surprised and wanting to be sure he wasn’t mistaken.
“Yes, it is.” The guard answered him, confirming it.
“What is she doing here?” He asked further and the guards
shrugged.
“I don’t know sir. I’m as confused as you are, sir.” He responded,
looking truly confused.
Noticing that Veronica wasn’t saying anything, neither was she
pleading, he turned to the guard, “Is she deaf?”
“I have no idea, sir. She has stayed mute since she opened the
door.
“Are you an intruder?” Captain Murphy asked Veronica and
surprisingly, she remained quite like she had truly become
mute.
Chapter 70
“Do you live here?” He asked again, and this time, she nodded, leaving them all shocked as they exchanged shocked glances.
“Arrest her and lock her up immediately!” Captain Murphy
ordered the rest of the guards.
“I’ll inform Beta Richard immediately. Just take her away.” He
added and the guards hurriedly grabbed Veronica and before she knew what was going on, they were on their way to lock
her up in jail.
As they left, Captain Murphy immediately called Beta Richard
to inform him of what had happened.
“What? Where did you find her?” Beta Richard asked through
the phone.
“We found her in Steve’s house. It seems she has been living
there.” He replied and Beta Richard became quiet, out of shock.
“Okay. I’ll inform the Alpha. Just lock her up. It’s already late
now. The Alpha will do the needful by morning.” Beta Richard
said and ended the call after commending them for a job well-
done.
As the rest of the guards finally left the premises, a little silence
was restored, but some other pack members still had a few
things to say to each other about how Steve harboured a
Chapter 70
stranger, who was a spy in his house, despite knowing the rules
of the pack.
While that was still going on, Megan arrived and to her shock,
the door to Steve’s house was wide open.
“No no no.” She muttered under her breath, hoping that what
she was thinking wasn’t the truth.
She rushed into the house, yelling Veronica’s name but no
answer came whatsoever. She searched every one of Veronica’s
hiding places in the room but found nothing.
As she was about to step out of the house, she found the key on
the floor, and it was then it dawned on her that what she feared
had happened.
She rushed out of the house and headed towards the pack
members who were still gossiping outside of their houses.
“What happened here?” She asked them and they shook their
heads.
“Did you know that Master Steve has been keeping a stranger in
his house all this while? The guards caught her tonight.” The
person explained to her.
“She should already know, seeing as she comes to the house
almost every day. She is an accomplice.” Another one said and
Chapter 70
Megan shot her a deadly stare.
“Where is she now?” Megan asked the first one, impatiently.
“I heard that they’ve taken her away.” He responded.
“To lock her up in jail. I’m sure she will be punished. In fact, she deserves to be punished!” The second one chipped in, with a serious tone.
Megan rushed back to Steve’s house and locked it with the key. She then hurriedly headed back to her house.
THE NEXT DAY
AT THE BORDERS
The warriors stood alert, their senses heightened, and their
hands on their weapons, as they looked to and fro, waiting to
attack any intruder instantly.
They had all been on high alert since they were deployed from
the pack to that spot and its environs. Since they were the best
out of the best, they had to act like it, and live up to their names,
and tasks.
“Make sure to deal with anything suspicious. Nothing must go
wrong and ensure you escort Steve back safely.” The voice of
Beta Richard echoed in their hearing and they stood, determined
Chapter 70
to take down any opponent who might come their way, trying
to hinder them from their work.
“He should be back today. We don’t know what time exactly, which is why we must be alert. The rival group might also try to catch us unaware, but we must not let that happen.” The leader of the group, Captain Jake, firmly said to the others, who nodded
in understanding as silence filled the air.
Shortly after he spoke, the silence was broken by the crunch of dried leaves beneath footsteps, approaching them. Their heads snapped towards the sound and they stood alert.
As the footsteps drew closer, Captain Jake noticed that the
footsteps were slow but calculated. He signaled to the rest of the
warriors and gestured to them to take cover and camouflage,
just in case it was a trap.
As they quietly did as they were told, he narrowed his eyes, his
gaze locked onto the entrance of the border. Positioned
strategically, the warriors had their hands on their knives
sheathed at their belts, ready to launch an attack immediately if
there was a threat.
The footsteps stopped right at the other side of the entrance of
the border. Next was a pause and then a tired figure gradually
emerged, his view, becoming clearer the closer he got.
Chapter 70
“It’s Master Steve, sir.” One of the warriors called out to Captain
Jake. “He is back.” he announced excitedly.
After making sure that they weren’t mistaken, they all rushed
out to meet Steve who was surprised to see them.
“Welcome back, sir.” They all greeted him in unison.
Tired, he sat on the bare ground.
“I didn’t expect to find anyone here. I must say, I’m so surprised.” He revealed, still looking surprised.
“We received instructions to come and wait for you here and
safely escort you back to the pack, just in case the unexpected
happens.” Captain Jake explained to him, and Steve sighed.
“Thank you all.” He said with a slight smile and then asked,
“How long have you guys been here though?”
“It’s been a few days.” Captain Jake replied, and Steve’s jaw fell,
in further surprise.
“Would you like to rest a little or should we be on our way back
to the pack now?” Captain Jake asked him, and seeing how tired
he was, he handed Steve a bottle of water which he gulped
down instantly.
“Just give me a few minutes. We can head back right after.”
Chapter 70
Steve replied, handing the empty bottle back to him.
After resting for a moment, he got up and the journey back to
the pack then began.
