Chapter 69
The days rolled by so quickly and Steve had now been gone for
six days. Megan had only been able to visit Veronica a few times
and those few times, she couldn’t stay too long because she
always had something important to do or somewhere important
to go to.
Back when Steve was around, she could decide to leave her
house and stay at his house for a full day without being
questioned, but since her dad thought Steve’s house would be
empty, he felt there was no point going to stay in an empty
house when the owner isn’t in.
Bored, Veronica was quietly and gently wiping the bookshelves
in the living room when she heard a slight sound of clicking
heels from outside. She froze, her heart skipping a beat.
Someone was approaching the main entrance.
Soon the footsteps became closer and louder. As the loud
footsteps echoed, her eyes darted towards the entrance.
“Who could that be?” She thought to herself. “Could it be
Megan?” She asked herself, whispering.
“But her footsteps have never been so loud. She always comes
Chapter 69
quietly.” She thought further.
As the footsteps grew louder as it came closer to the door, she
swiftly but carefully set the dusting cloth aside and tiptoed
toward the room, with her footsteps as silent on the plush carpet
as possible.
As she gently slipped into the room, she softly closed the door
behind her, and pressed her ears against the door to listen for
any further sound.
The footsteps finally paused at the door of the main entrance
and the next thing Veronica heard was the rattling of keys and
the doorknob.
Veronica held her breath and quietly ran to her hiding place,
under the bed. Soon she heard the door shut and the clicking
heels became louder on the floor. She closed her eyes, her breath
still held.
“Vee?” She suddenly heard a familiar voice whispering her name
and her eyes snapped open.
The voice called her again, “Where are you?” This time she
immediately recognized the voice, it was Megan’s.
She heaved a sigh of relief and slipped out from underneath the
bed.

“Megan?” She whispered and Megan who had been looking for
her, came back into the room.
“Where have you been? Were you in the room?” She asked,
looking worried.
“Yes, I was.” Veronica answered.
“Really? I checked the room, but you were nowhere in sight. In
fact, I was getting scared and worried that maybe something
had happened to you. I couldn’t pick your scent too.” Megan said
to her.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know it was you and so I went into hiding.”
Veronica replied, telling her why she wasn’t in sight when
Megan was searching for her.
Megan furrowed her brows, “Really? Who did you think it was?
No one else has access to this place aside from Steve, and I.” She
said, confidently.
“Yeah, right. That’s true, but I didn’t think about that. As soon as
I heard the clicking of your heels on the ground, I had to hide
because I don’t think I’ve ever heard loud footsteps.” Veronica
answered, her eyes gradually travelling from Megan’s dress and
falling to her shoes as she spoke.
“Oh wow.” She muttered, her eyes lit up and a slight smile
Chapter 69
formed on her lips as she saw Megan’s shoes. “These are really beautiful. Your dress looks really nice too.” She commented,
admiring her dress and the shoes too.
“Thank you.” Megan replied, blushing. “Actually, I’m attending
an important meeting with my dad outside the pack and so I had to dress up a little.” Megan said, smiling. “I know you’re
surprised.”
“You can say that again.” Veronica said, smiling too. “I was beginning to think that someone else had gotten the keys and was about to come in. I thought I was in trouble.” Veronica
whispered to her.
Megan laughed as she took her seat and dropped her keys and
her bag on a little stool beside her.

“Come and sit down too. You look too stunned.” Megan said, noticing how surprised Veronica still was as she kept admiring
her outfit.
Veronica snapped out of her zone, smiled and took her seat
beside Megan.
“I realized I haven’t really had much time to come here and so I
decided to come here today because I know I won’t be able to
come later today. You know I’m going out with my dad and I think we might stay out a bit late before we get back.” Megan
Chapter 69
explained, carefully.
“I understand. Thank you so much for always making out time to check up on me. I appreciate it.” Veronica thanked her with a
big grin.
“You’re welcome.” Megan replied with a smile.
“Although I know my dad will soon start blasting my phone
with calls any time from now. He was still trying to get ready
when I left the house. As soon as I was set, I just left. The
moment he doesn’t find me, he’ll begin to call me. I’m sure of
that. So, we just have a little time before he starts calling.” She
explained and sighed sharply.
“Okay. No problem.” Veronica nodded knowingly.
They soon began to gist, with Veronica telling her all that she
had been up to lately and how bored she gets sometimes.
Seborrow
“Don’t worry, you won’t be bored for too long anymore because
Steve should be back tomorrow.” She announced, and Veronica
turned to her, sharply.
“Really? Are you sure about this?” She asked, excitedly.
“Yes, that was what my dad told me.” She responded, nodding
her head.
“Okay. That’s great then. At least that way, you’ll be able to come around more, right?” Veronica asked her.
“Yes, finally.” She replied with a smile.
She then suddenly remembered something, “Oh! That reminds
me.”
“What is that?” Veronica inquired, staring at her, waiting for
answers.
“There might be an increase in guards on patrol from tonight. I
heard it’s the Alpha’s orders.” She informed her, and Veronica
nodded in understanding. “So just be careful to not make any
loud noise” She warned.
“Okay. I’ll do just that. Thank you so much.” Veronica
appreciated her for the information.
“But don’t get too worried, they won’t come here as long as you
do nothing loud or suspicious.” She assured her, and Veronica
heaved a sigh of relief.
While they were still speaking, Megan’s phone began to ring but
she didn’t hear because it was on silent and they were so
engrossed in their discussion.
They kept talking for about ten more minutes when she
checked the time and noticed that she had been there for almost
Chapter 69
thirty minutes.
“I’m surprised my dad hasn’t called me. He is taking longer than
usual.” She mentioned, checking the time once again.
“Why don’t you call him?” Veronica suggested to her and she
nodded.
“I’ll do that now. Why didn’t I think about that?” She then began
to search her bag for her phone.
As she took it out of her bag and unlocked it, her jaw dropped
and her eyes widened in shock. “Oh no!” She exclaimed.
“What is it?” Veronica asked with concern. “What happened?”
She looked at Veronica, “He has called me continuously. I have
nine missed calls from him alone already.” She lamented, and
Veronica’s eyes widened in shock too.
“But we didn’t hear it ring. How come?” Veronica stated as she
realized that they both didn’t hear the phone as it rang.
“Oh no! It was on silent mode.” Megan said, noticing that she had
put the phone on silent mode earlier in the day.
“Uh, that explains why we didn’t hear anything. I’m so sorry
about this.” Veronica apologized to her.
Chapter 69
“Come on, it’s not your fault.” Megan said, “I’m sure he is going to be very mad at me. I should call him back now.”
As she tried to call her dad back, his call came in and she sprung
to her feet. “I have to go now.” She said hurriedly.
“Hello dad. I’m so sorry. I’m already on my way.” She said into
the receiver as she grabbed her bag in a rush.
“Later.” She mouthed to Veronica and rushed out.
As Veronica made her way back to the chair and sat down, she
thought about what Megan said for a while.
“At least I’ll no longer be bored when Steve gets back.” She said to
herself with a smile.
“I need some water.” She got up and headed to the kitchen to
grab a bottle of water and a cup.
As she got back into the living room with the bottle, she sat on
the chair which Megan sat on. She poured the water into the cup, and as she dropped the bottle on the stool, she was shocked
at what she found lying on the stool. It was Megan’s key to
Steve’s house.
She hurriedly dropped the water in her head and began to pace.
She then rushed to the door and locked it and then began to pace
again
Chapter 69
“She forgot her key in a rush. What do I do now?” She asked
herself, panicking quietly.
She ran into the room to grab her phone, turned it on, and thought of calling Megan’s number.
“What if her dad is with her? Won’t I put her into trouble that
way?” She thought to herself and immediately discarded the
idea.
“I’ll send her a text instead.” She said to herself. “That way, we
both don’t have to talk.”
She immediately began to type a message to Megan and it read,
“Hi Megan, it’s Veronica. You left Steve’s key here when you
rushed out.”
As soon as she sent the message, she began to pace as she hoped
and wished that Megan was with her phone and would respond
soon.
A few minutes later, her phone vibrated and she hurriedly
checked it.
It was a message from Megan, “Oh no. I’m so sorry. I didn’t
realize I forgot it. Don’t worry, I’ll come over to collect it tonight
when we get back. I’ll knock thrice.”
Seeing Megan’s message, Veronica sighed in relief.
Chapter 69
“Thank goodness.” She muttered and responded an ‘okay‘ to the message and turned off her phone again.
Hours rolled by and Veronica couldn’t stay at peace. She also
couldn’t leave the living room because Megan had stated in her message that she was going to knock on the door thrice.
“If I stay in the bedroom, I won’t be able to properly hear the knock on the door.” She told herself and decided to stay back in
the living room where it would be easier for her to hear the
door.
Soon it was night, and Veronica had shortly fallen asleep on the
couch, when she suddenly heard three loud knocks on the door,
waking her from her slumber.
Without asking who it was, she got up.
“That must be Megan.” She thought to herself as she got up.
She grabbed the key and she rushed to the door.
As she opened the door, the key in her hand dropped to the
ground with a tingling sound, piercing the ears.
She couldn’t believe her eyes. What she saw, sent shivers down
her spine; IT WAS THE PACK GUARDS ON NIGHT PATROL!
