Chapter 64
“Are you alone?” Beta Richard asked Steve through the phone.
“Not really, sir.”
“What do you mean? Who is with you?” Beta Richard asked
him.
“Megan is with me.” Steve answered, and Megan’s eyes widened.
“What is going on?” She silently mouthed so that Beta Richard
wouldn’t hear her voice.
“On speaker.” Megan silently mouthed again and Steve put the
phone on loudspeaker, so they all could hear what Beta Richard
was saying to him.
“Just Megan? Are you sure there is no one else with you?” He
asked again and this time, it was Veronica’s turn to be shocked.
Steve and Megan’s eyes slowly turned in Veronica’s direction.
Her eyes widened as she held her breath as if he would be able
to hear her breathing from where he was.
“Steve? Are you still there?” Beta Richard asked, noticing the
sudden silence.
Chapter 64
“Yes sir. I’m still here.” Steve quickly answered to avoid any
suspicions.
“Why did it take you so long to answer?” He questioned him.
“I’m sorry, sir. I was doing something when your call came in, so
I was just trying to round it all up.” He lied, closing his eyes as the
words came flying out of his mouth.
“So, I was asking. Aside from Megan, is there anyone else with
you?” He asked the question again as this time, Veronica felt like
running back into the room to hide herself.
She thought about getting up and leaving the living room, but
she desperately fought the urge to do it as the fear of causing an
unintentional accident kept her glued to her seat.
“Uh, no sir. There is no one else with me.” Steve answered him,
still with eyes closed.
“Are
you sure?” He asked, “because you sound like you’re not sure of what you are saying.” He added, leaving all of them
surprised as they wondered why he kept asking if Steve was
truly with Megan alone.
It was as if he knew that someone else was with them.
“Are you sure?” He asked Steve again.
Chapter 64
“Positive, sir.” Steve answered, this time, confidently.
“Okay, then. I’ll be at your house shortly.” He said to him and
they all sat up in their chairs.
Megan began to gesture to Steve not to accept, but Steve didn’t
get what she meant.
“Hold on a moment. I need to attend to something quickly.” Beta
Richard said again and Steve made use of the opportunity to
swiftly mute the call.
“Give him an excuse to leave the house.” She suggested,
hurriedly. “If he comes here and sees Veronica, we’re done for.
We all will be in big trouble, and you? A bigger one.” She said,
almost screaming in fear.
“He already suspects that you’re with someone else. What if he
shows up here with a bunch of guards and they begin to search
this place?” She continued, her tone filled with worry and fear.
“Just tell him something else.” She whispered and Steve quickly
unmuted the call. Thankfully, Beta Richard was still busy and
didn’t suspect anything.
“I’m sorry about that. It was important and I needed to sort it out
really quickly.” Beta Richard said as soon as he got back on the
call.
Chapter 64
“Oh, it’s fine. I understand how busy you are.” Steve commented
in understanding.
“Yeah, so I said I’ll be there shortly. Let’s say in ten minutes time,
I should be there.
“Uh, sir? I’m about to step out now.
“Oh, where are you going to?” Beta Richard asked him.
“The market. I just noticed that some of my things have gone
bad because I’ve been away from home for so long. So I need to
restock. Can we meet somewhere else?” Steve said, tapping his
chair, quietly as he waited for Beta Richard’s response.
“That’s okay. We can meet at the pack’s park.” Beta Richard said, his voice accommodating. “Since it’s not too far from the market, you can go to the market right after we’re done.” Beta Richard
added.
Steve’s face lit up, a hint of relief flashes in his eyes. His shoulders relaxed, releasing the tension he didn’t realize he had
been holding.
“Alright sir. That’s fine. Thank you.” He replied, as he rejoiced
deep down that Beta Richard accepted his suggestion of meeting
somewhere else.
“Alright then, I’ll be at the pack’s park in fifteen minutes. See you
Chapter 64
then, Steve. Don’t be late.” He instructed and ended the call.
Steve immediately sighed in relief. “Phew! That was close.” He
muttered.
“What did he say?” Megan began to ask immediately.
Steve stared at her, his expression as cold as ice, “Megan, the call
was on loudspeaker. You can’t tell me you didn’t hear
everything that was said. Come on.” He rolled his eyes at her.
“I’m sorry, I just didn’t know what to say.” She replied, “So, what are you going to do now?”
Steve sighed, “I’m going to meet him now. I guess he is going to
talk about what my fa-”
He suddenly almost blurted out that Alpha Marcus was his father, but was quick to realize his mistake and so, he cleared his throat, loudly, acting like he had something blocking his throat.
Megan understood what was going on and she maintained a
serious expression.
“I guess he is going to tell me the Alpha’s instructions concerning my journey.” He said, glancing at Veronica, to be sure she didn’t catch on to the fact that he almost revealed who he truly was.
Seeing that she didn’t catch on to it, he sighed slightly, in relief.
Chapter 64
“I’m also going to make a stop at the market to get some things
for the house.” He added. “Do you need anything? I can get it on
my way back.” He asked, turning to Veronica.
“No, thank you.” She answered, “I’m fine.”
“Are you sure?” He asked further and she nodded affirmatively.
“Alright then. If you say so.” He said, “I’ll be on my way now.” He
got up and grabbed his car keys.
“What about me? Aren’t you going to ask if I need anything?”
Megan asked and Veronica smiled at Steve’s reaction.
“Why should I ask you when you can always get whatever you
want, whenever you want it.” He said with a joking sneer.
She rolled her eyes, shaking her head as she responded with a
frown, “You’re just stingy.”
“Oh my. Really?” He asked, clutching his chest in an exaggerated
gesture. “Did you just find out?” He teased her, a playful grin
spreading across his face and she nodded.
“I’m surprised at how I didn’t realize all these years.” She
answered him, with her hands folded across her chest.
Veronica just watched them, with a smile on her face as they
kept up with their banters.
Chapter 64
“I’m glad you have finally found out. I’m glad you have finally
seen me for who I am.” He teased her further, and as she shot
him a deadly stare, he laughed at her, obviously enjoying the
lighthearted exchange between them.
“You guys are really hilarious.” Veronica commented, laughing
too.
“I have to go now. I don’t want to keep him waiting.” He stated,
and they nodded.
“Alright. Stay safe.” Megan said, bidding him goodbye but before
got to the door, stopped him.
“I might leave before you get back though. I have some things to
do for my dad.” She quickly said before he left, while ensuring
that he heard her.
“No problem.” He replied.
“I also need to change my precious dress, which you ruined with
water from your mouth. Yuck!” She added with a frown,
reminding them of what Steve did minutes earlier.
Right after she spoke, there was an awkward silence in their
midst, lasting for a few seconds, leaving Steve and Veronica,
trying hard to hold in their laughter as they remembered the
scenario which Megan had just brought up.
Chapter 64
They all then suddenly burst into laughter.
“You had to bring it up again, Megan. Didn’t you?” Veronica said as she laughed her heart out.
“Of course, I have to. I’ll always remember today and remind him of what he did to me and my precious dress.” Megan replied and they found what she said funnier.
“In fact I’ll tell it to our kids when we have them.” She added, and they all laughed again, reading no particular meaning to what
her words.
“If I stay back. I’ll get in trouble with Beta Richard.” Steve said,
wiping tears from his eyes. He had laughed so much that his
eyes had tears in them.
He checked his wristwatch and saw that he had already spent five minutes out of the fifteen minutes he was given, laughing
and talking with Megan.
“I really have to go now, guys. Lock the door once I step out, Megan.” He said again and after bidding them good–bye, he
walked out and shut the door.
Steve got into his car and drove off to the park. Megan got up and walked to the door to lock it with its key.
“Sincerely, I really admire the genuine friendship between you

both. It makes me wish I still had my best friend, Kiera.”
Veronica said, as Megan walked back to take her seat.
“Oh, what about her?” Megan asked
Veronica’s eyes narrowed as she asked, “I thought I told you
about her already, or didn’t I?”
“You might have told me, but honestly, sometimes I tend to
forget things easily. So in case you told me and I can’t remember,
I apologize.
“And in case I didn’t tell you and I thought I did, I apologize too.”
Veronica replied in the same manner in which Megan spoke and
Megan chuckled.
“So, tell me. What about her?” Megan inquired, finally sitting
down.
“She unfortunately passed away.” Veronica revealed, her tone
filled with sadness.
“Oh my goodness.” Megan exclaimed.
“She was killed by rogue wolves when they attacked our pack.”
Veronica revealed, memories of her best friend flooding her
heart once again.
“I’m so sorry. That must have been a very difficult time.” Megan

said, trying to sympathize with her.
“It was. It was terrible. I just hope she is in a better place in the afterlife.” She muttered, and silence filled the air.
Shortly after, Megan’s phone rang, breaking the silence in the
room. And seeing the Caller ID, she immediately grabbed her
bag.
“It’s my dad. I have to go.”
