Chapter 60
As Steve approached the door, he began thinking about what
Veronica said. Could he truly be in trouble this time?
“I haven’t done anything wrong this time. As a matter of fact, I
just got out of the dungeon.” He thought to himself.
“Who is there?” He asked as he got to the door but there was no
response.
He peeped through the peephole, but there was no one in view.
“Is this a prank or something?” He hissed and turned to go back
in without opening the door.
As he got back into the room, Veronica, who had been waiting
anxiously, asked him with a very low tone, “Who was it?”
“I don’t know.” He shrugged, taking his seat beside her. “No one
answered me.” He added.
“Didn’t you open the door to check?” She asked him, but he
shook his head.
“I didn’t. I asked who was there but no one responded. Maybe it
was just a prank.” He replied, shrugging again.
Chapter 60
“You can’t be so sure. What if someone is actually out there waiting to see you?” She asked, with an unsettled look on her
face.
“Well, that’s why people should learn to answer when they are
being asked questions like, ‘who is at the door?‘, else they might
have to stay there longer than they expect.” He explained,
defending himself.
“So, you won’t check who it is?” She asked one more time.
“No, I won’t. Since the person has refused to say anything, they’ll
just have to leave or stay there for longer.” He said firmly, and
Veronica frowned.
Her brows furrowed in slight displeasure, “Come on, Steve.
What if it’s someone who can’t answer? What if they’re mute,
hurt, or… or worse?” She asked, with concern for whoever was
at the door.
“I promise you, you’re just overthinking this thing.” He said to
her, but she just kept staring at him as if his eyes had answers.
He sighed, his expression becoming slightly soft as he began to
speak, “I know you’re worried, but I’m telling you, it’s probably
just some kids messing around. They do that sometimes.” He
tried to explain to her, but she just wasn’t at peace.
Chapter 60
She leaned a bit closer, her voice lower than a whisper, “What if
it’s not? What if someone is in danger and you just ignored
them?”
Steve hesitated for a moment, but seeing that Veronica wasn’t
ready to leave him be, he decided to do what she wanted. “Fine,
I’ll check.” He said as he got up, and began to leave the room.
He was yet to completely leave the room when he heard the
knock again. Frustrated, he began to walk out of the room.
“Now, I’m going to give whoever that is, a piece of my mind.” He
said, as he stormed off, while Veronica just watched him go.
This time, he slowly turned and swung the door open. He was
about to yell when he heard a happy squeal from none other
than MEGAN.
“Megan!” He exclaimed and she flashed her beautiful set of teeth
at him.
“Tada!” She exclaimed, throwing her hands open wide.
“Wait, don’t tell me you were the one knocking earlier.” He
uttered.
She raised her eyebrows, folded her hands across her chest, a hint of amusement visible on her lips as she tried to maintain a
serious face.
Chapter 60
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She said, trying to hide
her amusement.
He narrowed his eyes as suspicion showed on his face, “So it was
you?” He asked, surprised. “No way. Now, I’m very positive that
it was you. I’m sure that I’m right.”
“Guilty as charged.” She chuckled as she held her hands up in
surrender. “Who else did you think it would be?” She asked,
laughing as she watched as he just stood there still surprised.
His expression then changed from being surprised to being
annoyed, “What didn’t you answer me when I asked who was at
the door?”
She shrugged, her grin still etched on her face, “Well, let’s just
say I wanted to scare you.”
He scoffed, “Scare me? You’re so silly.”
“I know.” She replied, smiling as she gently shoved him out of
the way and walked in with some plastic bags.
“You’re really annoying, you know that, right?” He said jokingly
as he shut the door and walked in too.
“I know.” She replied with a big grin and Steve just shook his
head at her naughtiness.
Chapter 60
“Come here.” She stretched her hands to him and before he could
stop her, she embraced him.
She suddenly pulled back, “Yuck! You stink so bad.” She said, her
tone laced with slight irritation. “Don’t tell me you have not showered?” She asked and he shrugged with guilt.
“What the actual hell!” She sniffed her clothes and frowned.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Well, I tried to, but you were too fast. It’s not my fault.” He
replied in his defense.
“Whatever!” She sneered at him as she took her seat in the living
room.
Right after sitting, she suddenly sprung up, “Where’s Vee?” She
whispered.
He motioned with his head and she immediately ran off to the
room, still holding the bags, while Steve just smiled as he
followed her.
Hearing the door open and seeing Megan, Veronica smiled.
“Vee,” Megan squealed a little too loudly.
“Whoa! You’re too loud. Are you trying to bring the house down?” He cautioned her and she shot him a deadly stare. He
Chapter 60
sneered at her, jokingly.
Megan proceeded to hug Veronica, “I’m sorry that I haven’t
come to visit for a few days now.” She apologized, and Veronica
replied, “It’s fine. It’s nothing.”
“Are you sure?” She asked, staring straight into her eyes and
Veronica nodded.
“I’ve just been super busy with a lot of things.” She said again
with a puppy face, making Veronica smile because of how
funny she looked.
Steve scoffed, and Megan turned to look at him, “you still stink,
by the way.” She said coldly, but playfully.
“You really should take a shower.” She added, laughing at
him, while Veronica tried so hard to hide her laughter.
“Do you think I stink too?” He asked, facing Veronica but she
shook her head, denying it.
He then faced Megan again, “Really? Is that how you’re going to welcome me after almost a month? Really, Megan?”
“Oh I didn’t know that I had to throw a welcome party for you. I
think it’s too late now.” She sounded so serious that one would
think she would actually throw a party, but Steve, who knew
her, knew that she was totally teasing him.
Chapter 60
They went on with their banter, while Veronica watched them,
and she began to remember her playful periods with Kiera. She
was still reminiscing on the old times with Kiera when Megan’s
touch on her hand snapped her out of her thoughts.
“Are you okay? You were so lost in thoughts.” Megan said and
Veronica nodded.
“Are you sure you don’t want to talk about it?” Megan pressed,
but she shook her head.
“I’m okay. It’s nothing.” She said with a slight smile.
“Okay, if you say so.” Megan uttered.
“So why did it take you so long to come here?” Steve asked her, “I
actually thought I was going to meet you here.”
L
“I’m so sorry. I apologize. Truth be told, I didn’t know you were
going to come back today, because I lost track of time. I had
actually planned to come here to say hello to Veronica and just
keep her company but the moment I saw text messages on my
phone from you, I knew you were out already.” She explained.
“And that brings me to the question, what happened to your
phone?” He asked her, “I tried calling you countlessly, but I was
unable to get through to you. I even tried to send you a text, but I
got no response.” He complained.
Chapter 60
“I sincerely don’t know what happened. It’s been like that all day. I couldn’t call anyone as well. I don’t know if there’s an issue with the cell towers, or something.” She replied, explaining what
happened.
“Probably. It’s possible.” Steve said, finally taking his seat on the
single couch in the room.
“Tell me, so did he come here?” Megan asked him, but the look
on his face showed that he didn’t understand what she was
saying.
“Who?” Steve asked, confused.
“Beta Richard, of course! You mentioned him in the text that I
got.” She answered.
“Oh yes, he brought me home.” Steve replied to her calmly
“Uh, that’s so nice of him.” Megan cooed but noticed Steve’s
expression was somehow plain.
“But that’s not all.” He said and Megan raised her eyebrows,
waiting for what he had to say.
“He came into the house.” Steve revealed, and Megan gasped in
shock.
“He did what?” She asked, her eyes moving from Steve to
Chapter 60
Veronica and back to Steve.
“How could you let that happen? Why didn’t you try to deny him access?” She kept asking continuously.
“You think I didn’t try?” He inquired, making her keep quiet, and he continued, “I tried but that man was so persistent. He insisted
on coming in despite the fact that I told him there wasn’t any
need to.” He explained and Megan turned to Veronica.
With concern, she asked Veronica, “Are you okay?” She nodded
affirmatively.
Facing Steve, she asked further, “Are we safe? Are we in
trouble?”
“Don’t worry, he didn’t see her. It was a close call but thankfully,
she actually hid properly.” Steve cut in, and Megan heaved a sigh
of relief.
“Thank goodness. I was scared for a moment. I thought we had
all gotten into trouble.” She said, thankfully.
“I thought you always said that you’re fierce and feisty? Did that
side of you disappear all of a sudden?” Steve teased her and she
sneered at him, not saying anything.
“You guys can take your time, I need to shower and take off these clothes. They are killing me, honestly.” He complained, and
Chapter 60
Megan gestured with her hands for him to leave. He left the
room and went to his other room to freshen up.
Shortly after, he was back again. Clean and neatly dressed,
smelling really nice.
“Oooouuu.” She cooed, “you look nice.” She complimented him
with smiles and he nodded.
“What about you, Vee? What do you think?” He asked her and
she nodded gently. “Just as Megan has said, It’s okay.” She said
and he smiled, mouthing, ‘thank you‘.

As he was about to take his seat, he noticed the bags which
Megan had brought to the house when she arrived. She seemed
to have forgotten all about it.
“Megan,” he called her, “what’s in the bag?” He asked her, and
that was the moment she realized that she had brought them.
“Oh my. I can’t believe I actually forgot these.” She said, picking
them up. The bags weren’t transparent, so the contents were
concealed.
“I’m not surprised. You’re sometimes forgetful.” He teased her,
and she sneered at him.
“Anyway, I brought you some fruits on my way here. They
looked fresh and attractive and so I bought them at the pack

market.” Megan said to him as she began to unpack the fruits
which had been in the bag all along.
“Wait, Megan. Where were you coming from? Since you’ve
established the fact that you were coming here, I need to know
where you were coming from. Because I know you, Megan, you
hardly go to the market. You only go there whenever you’re
opportuned to, or sent by someone important.” Steve said to her.
“You know me too well.” She said, blushing and Veronica couldn’t help but smile while Steve just rolled his eyes, seeing no
big deal in what just happened or what he had just said.
“Well, I had to go to the hospital first before coming here.” She
said, and as she said that, both Steve and Veronica’s heads
snapped at her, surprised.
“Hospital?”
