Chapter 53
“What is it, please?” Veronica asked, with eager eyes and Megan
gave a funny look.
“Really? Come on, guess.” Megan pressed, waiting for her to at least say something.
“I’m not good at guessing, Megan.” She said, seeing the look on
Megan’s face.
“Fine, since you’re not willing to guess. I guess I’ll have to keep
my information to myself.” Megan said, looking away.
“Come on, Megan. Please, don’t do that.” Veronica begged her
gently. “I really am so bad at guessing. And I’m not joking. I’m being very honest with you.” She said, further but Megan
refused to answer her.
She then got up and went straight to Megan, saying, “Please….”
with a cute little face.
“Fine! Just because of that cute little face, I’ll tell you.” Megan
said, smiling.
“So I spoke to my dad and he has agreed to speak to the Alpha.”
She continued.

“About what?” Veronica asked, looking confused.
“About Steve.” She revealed and Veronica’s eyes lighted up.
“Really? Are you being serious?” Veronica asked her.
“Of course yes. We spoke about it this morning and after much pleading, he agreed to speak to the Alpha and plead on Steve’s
behalf.” Megan answered.
“Wow. That is great news.” Veronica said, happily.
“Yes, it is. Let’s just hope that he comes back with a positive response.“. Megan replied as her mind began to wander off, her thoughts filled with Steve’s uncertain fate.
“Yes, there’s that too. I really hope that he gets a positive
response and Steve is released soon.” Veronica replied, her eyes mirroring Megan’s concern as she bowed her head a little.
“I can’t bear the thought of him being locked up for longer. He
did nothing so serious.” Megan said, her voice barely above a whisper as she gazed at the door as if waiting for him to pop out
of there.
Veronica’s head suddenly snapped up, looking at Megan again,
“But do you think the Alpha would listen, though?” She asked
her, worried.

“I really do not know. I guess we have to wait to find out.”
Megan said, worried and Veronica nodded in agreement.
Megan then suddenly remembered something and gasped,
startling Veronica.
“What is it? What happened?” She asked Megan, her tone filled
with intense concern.
“Oh my! I totally forgot.” Megan said, facing Veronica.
“Forgot what?” Veronica asked her, looking worried.
“About your injuries!” She replied, and Veronica sighed in relief.
“Phew! You really scared me. I thought it was something really
serious.” Veronica said with a now calm voice.
“Well, it is.” She replied, “How are you feeling now?” She asked
calmly as she remembered that she hadn’t asked about Veronica wellbeing, especially since she came into the pack with injuries.
Her expression turned apologetic as she reached out, her hand touching Veronica’s arm. “I’m so sorry I haven’t asked about
your health. I’ve been completely preoccupied with everything
that has been happening lately in the pack.”
“I understand, Megan. It’s fine. Really.” Veronica said with a
warm and reassuring smile but Megan refused to agree, her

guilt not letting her off the hook.
“No, it’s not fine,” she insisted, her voice laced with self–reproach.
“That’s too bad of me. I should have at least asked.” She said, with
her head bowed.
“I know that a lot has been happening, especially with Steve’s
situation and the pack’s lockdown, but I should have at least
made time out to ask about how you were faring even before
the lockdown. I’m so sorry.” She said again, beating herself up
over it.
Veronica’s eyes softened, seeing the genuine remorse in Megan’s
face, “Come on, it’s really fine. I really understand and I don’t
even blame you at all.” She said, covering Megan’s hand in hers,
gently.
“I’m so grateful for you and Steve. You both literally just met me,
less than a month ago, yet you’ve been a source of help to me.
You have both really helped me in ways I didn’t even imagine
and I do not take it for granted.” She continued, again letting out
a warm smile. “Thank you so much.” She said again and gave
Megan a quick hug.
“As a matter of fact, I feel much better now, in fact, I feel as good
as new. I don’t even feel the pain anymore.” She said pulling
back and sitting properly.

“Really?” Megan asked with a puppy face and Veronica
chuckled.
“Yes, really.” She then proceeded to stand up and walked around
the room, showing Megan that she was perfectly fine.
“I couldn’t do all of these before, you know. I used to be in so
much pain but now, I can even work out without feeling any
pain.” Veronica said and from her tone, it was evident that she
was so glad about the positive progress of her health.
“I’m so glad. If I was in your shoes, in that kind of pain, I would
have lost my mind a long time ago.” Megan said and Veronica
laughed.
“I must say, you really are strong. To be able to go through all
that pain all alone? Nah, you’ve got to be a very strong person.”
Megan said, sounding convinced.
“I doubt that.” Veronica said, her smile disappearing
immediately and she looked away, trying to hide her sad
expression.
Noticing the change in her demeanor, Megan asked her, “What
is it? Is anything the matter?”
“No, it’s nothing.” Veronica lied, facing her.
“Are you sure?” She asked, to be sure.

“Of course.” Veronica replied with a fake smile which Megan
didn’t suspect.
“Okay, if you say so.” Megan shrugged and cleared the remnants
of their breakfast from the table.
THE ALPHA’S PALACE
Alpha Marcus was just finishing up with his breakfast in his
inner chamber when Beta Richard walked in.
“Good morning, Alpha.” He greeted and Alpha Marcus nodded
his head as munched on the last portion of food in his mouth. He
then gestured with his hand for Beta Richard to take his seat.
“Good morning, Richard. Have you had breakfast or should the
maids get you something to eat?” He asked, wiping his mouth
with the paper towel.
“Oh no.” Beta Richard shook his head to decline the offer. “I ate
before coming here.” He revealed.
“Okay then. How is Lily?” He asked him as the maids cleared up
his plates and he got up, and walked to his throne to take his
seat.
“She is doing well. At least her mind is at rest since the lockdown
has been lifted.” He said and continued, “Do you know that she also wanted to join the special search team?”

“Really?” Alpha Marcus asked, surprised. “She really wanted to
do that?”
“Yes, she did, but I kicked against the idea. I didn’t want Scott to
be home alone.” Beta Richard answered.
“But there are maids, aren’t there?” Alpha Marcus asked him.
“Yes, I know but no one can be trusted these days. It’s better to be
safe than sorry, you know.” Beta Richard said, leaning back into
the chair.
“Good call. That’s true though, especially with everything that
has been going on in recent times.” Alpha Marcus replied,
nodding his head in agreement with Beta Richard’s decision.
“That’s typical of Lily. She hasn’t changed one bit.” Alpha Marcus
said jokingly.
“I agree with you totally.” Beta Richard replied and they both
chuckled.
“Speaking of Scott, that reminds me, how is he holding up since
the news about his missing friend?” Alpha Marcus asked as he
remembered Scott’s forest friend. “What did he call her name
again? Was it Tee or Vee?” He asked, trying to remember the
name Scott mentioned to them.
“Yes, Vee. He speaks about her every single day.” Beta Richard

stated. “Hw keeps asking us when we think she will be found. In
fact, he now has a journal where he writes the number of days
since she went missing. He also devises plans and schemes.” He
added, rolling his eyes and shaking his head.
“Really? That young man is always up to something.” Alpha
Marcus said, laughing.
“You can say that again. He is always up to one thing or another.
Now he keeps saying he will find her and will do whatever it
takes.” Beta Richard said.
“He really means business.” Alpha Marcus said jokingly. “For
him to say he is ready to do whatever it takes. Does he even
know what that means?” He asked and Beta Richard just
shrugged.
“At this point, I’m done convincing him otherwise. Even his
mother has given up trying to make him channel his energy into
something else. We have accepted his words as it is because
there is really no point arguing with him.” He said with a tone
that showed that he was done with all of Scott’s tactics.
A guard suddenly knocked on the door.
“Yes, come in.” Alpha Marcus instructed and he came in and
immediately bowed.

“Yes, what is it?” He asked the guard.
“Council member Hill is here to see you, Alpha.” The guard
announced to him.
“You mean Councillor Maxwell Hill?” Alpha Marcus asked him
to be sure.
“Yes, Alpha.” The guards replied and the Alpha and Beta
exchanged glances.
“Is everything fine?” Alpha Marcus asked him.
“I have no idea, Alpha. I don’t have the full details. He only told
me to tell you that he came to see you.” The guard revealed.
“Where is he?” Alpha Marcus asked.
“He is waiting for you in the general palace meeting area.”
“Okay, then. Tell him that I’ll be there shortly.” He said to the
guard who nodded and left immediately.
“We should go.” He then said to Beta Richard and they both
headed for the meeting area to see Councillor Maxwell.
