Chapter 52
“Veronica?” She heard a familiar voice, whispering her name
and she immediately opened her eyes and waited to be sure that
she wasn’t hallucinating and that she heard clearly.
“Veronica, where are you?” She clearly heard it the second time
and she immediately recognized the voice. She sighed in relief as
she realized that it was none else but Megan.
“I’m here.” Veronica answered, whispering too.
“Where?” Megan replied, her eyes scanning through the room
for any sign of Veronica. “I don’t see you anywhere.” She said
again as she didn’t find her anywhere visible.
“I’m right here.” Veronica said again, slipping her hand out from
under the bed and waved at Megan, startling her.
“Oh my goodness!” Megan screamed and immediately covered
her mouth to avoid getting unnecessary attention from people.
“What are you doing there?” Megan asked after she composed
herself.
“I was hiding.” Veronica revealed and slipped out from under
the bed, with Megan lending her a helping hand as she got up.
Chapter 52
“Hiding from who?” Megan asked her, raising an eyebrow.
“The guards.” She replied and was about to speak further when
Megan interrupted her.
“Hold on, how long have you been hiding under there?” Megan
asked, pointing at the bed.
“Ehmm, since last night.” Veronica answered and Megan’s jaw
dropped.
“Wait, what? You mean you’ve been there since last night? So
you literally slept right there on the floor?” She asked, unable to
believe her ears.
“Yes, in fact, I just woke up. You woke me up.” Veronica said,
stretching herself.
Megan was speechless. “But why were you hiding? Did anything happen?” She asked further.
“Yes, a lot happened.” Veronica replied and paused, taking her
seat on the bed.
“Really? Talk to me, please. What happened?” Megan asked, taking her seat too, totally interested in what Veronica was
about to say.
“The search team were around this axis last night and I could
Chapter 52
hear them ordering people out of their houses, in order to search
the house.” She revealed and Megan listened carefully.
“Okay,” Megan pressed, her eyes keenly focused on Veronica.
“Soon after, I heard them having a misunderstanding but I don’t
know what it was about. I couldn’t find any other spot to hide in
case they decided to come in here and so the only option I was
left with was under the bed. But at some point, I guess they were
trying to break into the house but that is the only thing I can
remember right now.” Veronica narrated everything to Megan.
“I’m guessing you slept off while hoping that they wouldn’t
come in, right?” She asked Veronica.
三
“Yes, exactly.” She nodded affirmatively. “I was so shocked when
I heard the door this morning. I thought they finally broke in.”
Veronica added and Megan chuckled.
“They wouldn’t dare break in.” Megan then said and Veronica
was left a bit confused.
“What do you mean by that?” Veronica asked her, “you know if
they were to follow the Alpha’s orders to search every single
house, they would have broken into this place. You know that
right?” Veronica said further.
“Yeah, you’re right. If it was some other random person, they
Chapter 52
probably would have broken in without batting an eyelid. But
for this house? No, they wouldn’t even dare to do such a thing.”
Veronica explained, leaving Veronica more confused.
“But why?” Veronica asked, trying to clear her confusion.
Megan paused for a brief moment and with a little, she then
answered, “Let’s just say Steve enjoys certain privileges.”
“Really?” Veronica said, thinking about what Megan just said.
“But what kind of privileges?” She asked as she couldn’t
understand what privileges Steve could have.
“Uhm, I can’t go into details because Steve wouldn’t like that.”
Megan answered her.
“But he isn’t here now.” Veronica said, expecting Megan to at
least give a hint.
“It doesn’t matter if he is here or not. I won’t say anything.”
Megan responded.
“Come on, Megan, you can just give me a little clue, I promise I
won’t tell Steve that you told me anything.” Veronica said,
trying to smartly get Megan to speak about it.
Megan then squinted, “Don’t tell me you’re trying to smartly get
information out of me.” She said and Veronica’s eyes darted
from side to side as she realized Megan had caught up to her
Chapter 52
plan.
“Well, is it working?” Veronica asked expectantly.
“Of course not.” Megan answered, and Veronica sighed, giving
up and Megan smiled slightly.
“But-” Veronica again tried to protest.
“No buts, Veronica. Enough with the talk about Steve.” Megan
cut her off before she could talk again.
“That reminds me, why are you here anyway?” Veronica asked her. “I thought nobody was allowed to leave their houses.” She
said, remembering the Alpha’s orders.
Veronica then suddenly gasped and with wide eyes, asked
Megan, “Did you run away from home?”
“What!? Of course not! Why would I even do such a thing?” Megan replied sharply, and Veronica heaved a sigh of relief.
“Then what are you doing here? Does your dad know that you
have left the house?” Veronica asked, concerned.
“Calm down, Veronica. Just take a chill pill. I didn’t run away
from home and my dad knows I’m here.” Megan answered
boldly.
Chapter 52
“Oh, okay. I’m quite surprised though.” She muttered.
“Surprised? About what?” Megan asked, wondering what
Veronica was surprised about.
“I’m surprised that you left your house despite the Alpha’s
orders.” Veronica answered, trying not to think too much about
- it.
She thought that Megan was able to leave her house despite the
order because her father was an important personality in the
pack.
“No one dares to go against the Alpha’s orders no matter who
they are. I haven’t left my house since the order was
announced.” Megan said, clearing the air.
“But how are you here then?” Veronica asked her again and at
that moment Megan realized what the issue was.
“Wait, don’t tell me that you didn’t hear the new announcement,
despite the fact that the Pack Heralds were yelling it into every corner of the pack?” Megan asked her, with raised eyebrows, and Veronica’s confusion became completely evident.
“What? There is a new announcement? I didn’t know. I didn’t
hear anything at all.” Veronica said, quite surprised as she tried
to remember if she heard anything prior to when Megan came.
Chapter 52
“Of course, you didn’t because you were busy sleeping away.” Megan said jokingly and they both laughed heartily.
“Sincerely, I didn’t know. I was just wondering why you could be
here when the whole pack was ordered to remain indoors.”
Veronica said, “So what is the new announcement? Is the pack
now back to normal?” She asked.
“The pack is back to its normal activities.” Megan said excitedly.
“Really?” Veronica asked, with excitement all over face.
“Yes!” Megan said with a joyful squeal. “The past week has been
one hell of a week. Being stuck indoors and not leaving the
house when I want to. I’m happy that it’s over now.” Megan said,
happiness evident in her voice and Veronica smiled.
Even if she wasn’t leaving the four walls of Steve’s house, at least
she knew that she was safe and off the hook and she could
finally be free from the fear of the pack guards finding her.
“But how do you cope though?” She suddenly asked, turning to
Veronica. “I mean, being cooped up indoors all day without the opportunity to go out and take in some fresh air.” She continued,
“How do you cope? I really want to know.”
Veronica sighed and said, “I really don’t have a problem with it
because back at my previous pack, I hardly went out. I only
Chapter 52
usually go out with my best friend.” She said, intentionally
keeping Beck’s name out of the conversation, because there was
no point in talking about a man who rejected her?
“So, what about your best friend now? Is she cool like you?”
Megan asked, interested in knowing about Veronica’s best
friend.
N
“Oh yes, she was so cool. Even cooler than me.” She forced a
smile. “She was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Veronica added but Megan frowned.
W
“Was? Why do you keep using ‘was‘?” Megan couldn’t help but
notice the use of a past tense in Veronica’s words.
“She passed away. Right in my arms.” Veronica said, trying to
fight back her tears, while Megan couldn’t contain her shock.
“Oh my, I’m so sorry. Come here.” She pulled Veronica, whose
tears had now begun to pour out, into a warm embrace. “I’m so
sorry, I didn’t know. I shouldn’t have asked.” She muttered, still
hugging her.
“No, it’s fine. You didn’t know.” Veronica said, pulling away and
wiping her tears. “Honestly, I miss her so much.” She added and
handed Veronica a paper towel to wipe her eyes with.
Megan then gave her some minutes to calm down. She then
Chapter 52
suddenly remembered something and ran off to the living room,
saying, “Oh no, how could I forget.
“What is it?” Veronica asked hurriedly as she watched as Megan
went into the living room.
Shortly after, she came back with two bags.
“What are those?” Veronica asked, squinting her eyes.
“Breakfast. I totally forgot that I stopped by at the Mart to get us
some breakfast to start the day.” She said as she began to
unwrap the contents of the bag and set it on the bedside stool.
“Thank you, Megan. That’s so thoughtful of you.” Veronica
appreciated her.
“You’re welcome.” Megan replied with a smile.
They soon dived into the food and began to devour it. They were almost done eating when Megan remembered something she
had wanted to say since she got there but forgot.
“That reminds me,” Megan said, calling Veronica’s attention to
her, “I’ve got some great news. Guess what…”
