Chapter 51
“Have you both gone deaf?” Captain Murphy asked as he walked
towards them, while the rest of his team stayed back and waited
for him.
“I just asked you both a question. I said, what are you doing here?” He asked again, now standing in front of them but they
were too embarrassed to speak.
“I believe that I’m not speaking to deaf and dumb guards, right?”
He asked. “Stan? Fred?” He called their names.
“Yes, Captain.” They both answered.
“Oh, they are not deaf, after all.” Captain Murphy said, as he
waited for them to start talking.
“So?” He urged them, raising his eyebrows, still waiting patiently
for them to begin to talk about what they were up to at Steve’s
house.
“Actually, we were trying to go into the house to search for-”
Fred began to talk shakily.
“Wait, what!?” Captain Murphy exclaimed, interrupting him as
he was unable to believe his ears. “You were trying to do what?”
Chapter 51
“To go into the house to search.” Fred replied, pointing at Steve’s
house behind them.
“To search for what exactly? Don’t you know whose house this is?” He asked angrily. “Are you planning to put us all into trouble
or what?”
“We are sorry. We just wanted to check to be sure.” Fred said,
his voice lacking confidence.
“ON WHOSE ORDERS?” Captain Murphy thundered and they
both lowered their heads, unable to say anything.
“Don’t go quiet on me now, I need an answer this minute! Who
gave the order for you to break into this house?” He yelled again
and Fred answered.
“No one, Captain.” He said, inaudibly but Murphy heard it loud
and clear.
“What?!” He couldn’t believe it. “Where is the rest of the team?
Where is Weston?” He asked them.
“They left already.” Fred answered, with a very low voice.
“They left? What do you mean ‘they left‘?” He asked, unable to
understand what was going on.
“They had to leave because we chose to stay back and search
Chapter 51
here. We were not sure if the traitor would be here, so we
wanted to see for ourselves if-” Fred tried to explain before he
was shut up.
“SILENCE!” His deep voice shut him up immediately and he lowered his head.”
“You were all distributed into groups so that you could work as a team. No one is expected to be flying solo, so I really need answers and I expect you both to start talking. Especially you, Stan, you have been unusually quiet and I have no words for
you right now.” He said, glaring at Stan who seemed like he had
become dumb and deaf all the while, leaving only Fred to talk.
“I… I,” Stan began to stammer.
“How did you become a stammerer all of a sudden, Stan?”
Captain Murphy asked with a frown on his face.
“I’m sorry sir, it was all my fault. I didn’t listen to Weston. I just
wanted to follow the Alpha’s orders. I’m so sorry.” Stan
confessed, but Captain Murphy didn’t seem pleased at all.
“I don’t care whose fault it is, all I am asking for is where the rest
of your team members are, and why you both are trying to
break into this house like thieves, seeing as the home owner isn’t
here.” He said, icily as he glared at them. “Or have you started
stealing too now?” He asked them.
Chapter 51
“No sir.” They swiftly answered, gesturing with their hands too.
“So, how do I know that you’re not just lying to me? How am I sure that you both weren’t planning to take the opportunity of
Steve’s absence to steal from his house.
“Oh no. Please Captain, that’s not the case. We had no intention
of such.” Stan pleaded. “We only wanted to search.”
“By breaking in?” Murphy asked him. “I must say, I’m highly disappointed in you both. In fact, being highly disappointed in you both is an understatement but for lack of a better word to use, I’ll use that way. There is a level of trust that I had in both of you, that was why I allowed you to be a part of this team, but you have shown that you can NOT be trusted. You’ve also proven to me that you aren’t worth it in any way.” Captain Murphy’s words cut deeper than a knife, his tone filled with disappointment. Stan and Fred, his partner, immediately began
to regret their actions.
“I’m sure that by now, you both know that rebellion and insubordination is not tolerated here, most especially when a special and important task like this is involved.” Captain Murphy said further and they nodded.
With heads lowered and shoulders dropped, each one of them
muttered, “I’m sorry, sir.”
Chapter 51
“You’re sorry? I’m sure you know that sorry doesn’t cut it. Sorry
doesn’t solve problems.” He said with a cold expression.
“Actions have consequences and you know this, don’t you?” He
said to them again, disappointment still audible in his tone.
“We do, sir.” They replied in unison.
“And so, for rebellion and insubordination, you are both off the
special search team, effective immediately.” He said sternly and
their faces dropped as they both their lips in regret.
“You’ll be punished too.” He added and they both looked up at
him, swiftly.
They really thought they had escaped. They thought he was
going to let it slide and will just leave it at taking them off the
team, but it seemed like they were completely wrong because he
had more for them.
“What? Did you really think you were only going to be taken off
the team? Just that?” He asked, furrowing his brows, and the
young men became speechless. “You must be really silly if you
had that thought. Do you know the severity of what you were
trying to do?”
“We do, sir.” They answered again, terribly disappointed in
themselves.
Chapter 51
“Even with all of these, I’m being lenient with you both because if the Alpha gets to find out about this, no one knows what will become of you two.” He said again they nodded because they knew how true his words were.
“So, report yourselves to Captain Jake immediately after now. You’ll probably receive new assignments, far below your present ranks.” He said to them on a final note.
“Understood sir.” They muttered, their hearts filled with pain and regret.
With that, Captain Murphy dismissed them and he and the rest
of his team went their way as they began to round up with their
search.
As soon as it was the dawn of the next day, their search was
done and they had already been able to search the whole pack.
Captain Murphy reported to the Alpha’s palace. Alpha Marcus
and his Beta were already present in the palace.
“Any news, Murphy?” Beta Richard asked as soon as he entered
and bowed before the Alpha.
“I’m afraid, we searched all round the pack but we didn’t find anything.” He reported.
“Are you sure about this?” Beta Richard asked him.
Chapter 51
“Yes, Beta Richard. All the special search teams searched every nook and cranny, including all the blind spots, but we didn’t find anything.” Murphy confirmed as he checked the records of
every area that they checked and then handed it over to Beta
Richard to check for himself.
“How can this be possible?” Alpha Marcus muttered to himself.
“I think the traitor might have escaped. Seeing as we have
searched everywhere but couldn’t find anything. That’s the
conclusion that we were able to come up with.” Captain Murphy
said further.
“Yes, there is the possibility that they escaped right after the fire, before we suspected anything.” Beta Richard said, handing the
in th
record back to Captain Murphy, and Alpha Marcus nodded in
agreement.
“Still we should not let down our guard. The pack’s security has
to be heightened all the time. From now on, there should be
guards on patrol around the pack during the day and at night
too. Report any suspicious actions or movement.” Alpha Marcus
gave out further instructions, while Captain Murphy noted it all
down.
“Noted, Alpha.” Captain Murphy nodded in agreement. “But
what about the order for everyone to remain indoors? Is it still
in place?” He asked, unsure if what the decision of the Alpha
Chapter 51
was going to be.
“Oh no, at least not for now.” Alpha Marcus said, gesturing with
his hands. “Tell the Pack’s Heralds to announce to the pack. They
are free to leave their houses and go about their daily activities,
but if they find anything suspicious, it should be reported
immediately.” He instructed him and Murphy nodded in
response.
“You can go now. If anything comes up, report to me
immediately.” Alpha Marcus ordered.
“I will; Alpha.” He replied and left immediately.
Veronica was awakened by the sound of the door which was
shut loudly and she jerked awake out of her sleep. She had fallen
asleep while waiting for her fate the previous night and didn’t
know that it was now morning already, so she didn’t hear the
pack herald’s announcement.
Hearing the sound of rushing footsteps approaching the room
made her heart skip a beat as she wondered who could be there
at that time of the day.
“I’m done for. This is the end.” She thought to herself as she held
her breath and closed her eyes.
