Chapter 28
That very night, Steve sneaked Veronica into the pack without
being caught, but there was a problem on their way to the pack-
Veronica got too tired and because she had been in so much pain
for a long time, she became unconscious just miles before they
arrived at Fire Dawn Pack.
Afraid and confused, he was torn between two options: whether
to keep going with her or to abandon her somewhere.
Abandoning her was dangerous but taking her like that to the
pack was equally dangerous. He had to stop for a moment to
think his decision through. He laid her on the bare ground and
began to do some fast but deep thinking.
If he was caught with an unconscious stranger in his arms, he’d
risk being thrown into jail but if he leaves her there, she might
be attacked and killed.
“Damn!” He lamented, kicking the dust.

After a long moment of pacing and thinking hard about it, he
placed his hand on the side of her neck and her wrist and felt
what seemed like a pulse.
“She’s still alive.” He gasped and finally decided to take her to the

pack regardless of what could go wrong after.
He carried her in his arms once again and began to walk
hurriedly to the pack to be able to at least get her help.
Being a member of the pack, he knew every shortcut and path
that led to the back of the pack where his house was situated.
Since it had already gotten so dark, it was easy for him to evade
the guards and he got to his house without anyone noticing him,
let alone notice he had a guest, a stranger.
He opened the door and shut it back as he got in. He walked to
his bedroom immediately and laid Veronica gently on the bed,
supporting her head with a soft pillow. Quickly, he pulled all the
curtains and locked the windows firmly.
He then swiftly ran back to the door. He opened it slightly,
silently and carefully and peeped out with one eye. He did this
to double check, and confirm that he had not been followed.
As soon as he was sure that he wasn’t followed or seen by
neither the guard, nor any member of the pack, he quickly shut
the door but in an attempt to quickly shut the door, he
mistakenly let it go before it closed completely, which made it
make a loud banging sound as it shut.
“Damn!” He cussed.

He quickly rushed and peeped through the window to see if
anyone was alerted by the loud sound, but seeing no one, he
heaved a sigh of relief.
He rushed back into the room and there, Veronica was still on the bed. He turned on his bedside lamp and moved close to her. He touched her forehead but immediately drew back.
“She’s burning hot.” He exclaimed quietly.
He rushed into his bathroom and got a bowl of cold water and a clean towel. He dipped the towel into the water, squeezed it and placed it on her forehead. He then kept monitoring her
temperature which kept fluctuating.
Although he wasn’t a doctor, he had first hand knowledge of
first aid and basic treatments.
He got another towel with warm water and used it to wipe her hand and face and other parts of her body which were visibly
dirty due to her ordeal in the forest.
He got a first aid box and after disinfecting the wounds, he then
began to apply ointments and band–aids to the wounds.

He checked her forehead again and noticed she was no longer burning as hot as she was before. He then replaced the towel with another wet one and placed his head on the bed as he

waited to change the towel again but ended up sleeping off.
He only woke up after he heard noises of the pack members
going about their daily activities, as it was their routine to leave
their houses early every morning. It was at that moment that he
realized that he had slept off while waiting to change the towel.
“I can’t believe I slept off last night.” He said to himself, yawning.
He quickly checked Veronica’s temperature and saw that she
was already stable but she wasn’t waking up, neither was she
showing any signs that she would wake up soon.
“I hope I have not pushed myself into something much more
than I can handle.” He thought to himself as he tried to hold her
hand, hoping that she would react to his touch.
Unfortunately, she didn’t react and this got him seriously
worried. He moved close to her nostrils and noticed she was
breathing, although weakly, but she was.
“Now what do I do?” He asked himself, biting down on his lower
lip.
Right at that moment, there was a loud knock on the door and
he held his breath, in shock.
“Who could be here this early?” He whispered to himself.

He didn’t respond and kept quiet, hoping that whoever it was
would leave if they didn’t hear anything.
He stood on a spot, without moving, for fear of being heard but
the knock came again, this time, louder than the first.
“I know you’re in there. Steve!!!” Megan yelled his name, giving
him a clue of who was at the door.
“What is she doing here at this time?” He asked himself.
“I know you’re there, Steve. Just open the damn door.” She yelled
again.
“How does she know I’m in here, with the windows and door
completely locked? This girl!” He hissed.
“I’ll not leave here and I won’t stop yelling until you open this
door.” She shouted from outside as she kept banging on the door.
Steve was left with no choice but to open the door. He closed the
room door and went to the front door.
“What the hell is wrong with you? Isn’t it too early for you to be here? Huh?” He asked as he opened the door.
“I knew you were in. You can fool others but you can’t fool me.”
She said with a frown.

“You’ve not answered my question. Why are you here this
early?” He asked her but she shoved him out of the way and
walked in, but Steve quickly ran towards his room door and
stood in front of it.
“Do I need your permission before I come here? It’s not like this is
my first time here anyway.” She replied, rolling her eyes at him.
“Besides, I haven’t seen you since you went hunting yesterday. I
needed to confirm that you were alright.” She added, blowing
into her nails.
She then tried to go into his room but he refused to move out of
the way.
“What is it? Why are you acting strange?” She asked him.
“Nothing. Am I acting strange?” He asked her, acting innocent.
“Of course! You’re acting strange and you know it.” She said,
staring at him.
She then suddenly gasped, “Did you bring a girl home last
night?” She shouted at him.
“What? No!” He replied, defending himself.
“Then get out of my way, I want to go into your room.” She
yelled at him but he refused.

She suddenly began to cough violently, scaring Steve who
immediately let down his guard to help her but she used that
opportunity to smartly rush into the room before he could stop
her.
Seeing Veronica on the bed, she screamed.
