Chapter 26
After Veronica’s outburst, she remained quiet while Steve just remained quiet because he felt like whatever he said at that moment could trigger her anger more, so he decided to stay by her side and allow her to cry it all out.
After noticing that she was a bit calm, he decided to speak to her, and so he cleared his throat before he began to talk.
“I’m so sorry for how I reacted and for every word that I said. I’m
genuinely sorry. It was because I didn’t know better and I jumped into conclusion without fully understanding your situation. I sincerely apologize.” He apologized and waited for her response but instead of saying anything, she only nodded in
acceptance and so he started speaking again.
“You know,” he began, “I won’t say that I understand exactly how you feel but I will still say what I said earlier: please don’t
think that you’re cursed. Don’t even say you are cursed. You’re a
beautiful young lady with a bright future ahead of you, If you’ll only just see it and walk in it and not allow naysayers ruin it all
for you.” He spoke so calmly but Veronica shook her head in
disagreement. She didn’t believe any of his words.
“I don’t believe that. I think you’re just trying to patronise me but
Chapter 26
you really don’t have to. There’s no point doing all of that. I know what I am.” She said to him as soon as he finished
speaking.
“And what are you?” He asked her, curiously.
“A cursed omega; useless and worthless.” She replied coldly.
“Don’t talk like that, please.” He said, facing her. “I know you said that you’ve been through a lot and I know I’ll never be able to quantify or understand all that you have been through, but
please don’t give up on yourself. Don’t be in a hurry to put
yourself down and believe other people’s opinions about you
just because things didn’t work out the way they wanted.”
“So how do you explain the rogue attack on our pack? My best
friend’s death? How?” She asked him.
“Coincidence, Veronica. It could have just been a mere
coincidence.” He answered her and unexpectedly held her hands
softly.
“Look, people always try to push the blame onto others,
especially the ones they know who won’t be able to fight back.”
He said again and she soon began to reason with what he was
trying to explain to her.
“That’s why you need to learn to be strong and not allow others
Chapter 26
to trample upon you. Don’t let anyone see you as a weak link.” He adviced, and she sighed after which she took her hands off his grip and they both became silent.
“I’m sorry for yelling at you. It came from a place of hurt and anger. I was angry that you didn’t know what exactly was going on, yet you already concluded and misunderstood me.” She
explained to him.
“I understand. I shouldn’t have concluded so rashly. I’m sorry
about that once again.” He apologized.
“It’s fine.” She replied with a little smile, and Steve smiled too as
he stared at her but this made her a little bit uncomfortable that
she had to look away. He also composed himself and looked
away as they were both thrown into another round of silence.
“Steve?” She called his name, breaking the silence again. “Thank
you so much.”
“What for?” He asked her.
“For being here with me, I guess.” She said shyly and he smiled.
“And being positive.” She added.
“I feel like you might be an amazing person.” She said, almost
whispering, but Steve heard her loud and clear.
“No way… Did I just hear you correctly? You think I MIGHT be
smiling.
“Come on, stop being dramatic.” She said, smiling cutely.
“Oh my, I’m so hurt. My head is aching. My heart is in pain. Oh
- no. Oh my.” He said in a funny way and she started laughing at
the way he was acting up.
She laughed so hard that she began to cough and she fell off the
tree they had been sitting on. She immediately screamed out in
pain.
“Oh no! Are you okay?” He immediately rushed to her.
“I can’t believe you laughed and fell off. Was I that funny?” He
asked her jokingly and she nodded, trying not to speak.
“Are you okay?” He asked again and she shook her head.
“I think I might pass out.” She said as he
Hearing this, his eyes widened, “I think we need to take you to
the hospital.” He said.
“I don’t think I can go anywhere. I have nowhere to go to.” She
replied, still in severe pain.
Steve looked around and at that moment, noticed it was already
Chapter 26
getting dark. He tried to check his wristwatch for the time but
realized he had left it at home.
“I can’t believe we’ve been talking and I lost track of time.” He
said and she noticed too.
“We need to go now.” He told her and she frowned.
“Go where? I told you I had no place to go.” She reminded him.
“I know. I’ll take you to my pack.” He said to her and she froze.
“I don’t think you can do that. Do packs just allow strangers
these days?” She managed to ask him. “Because if I remember
correctly, strangers weren’t allowed when I was a member of
my previous pack.” She explained and he bit his lips as he
remembered that that was the same rule in his pack too.
“But I can’t leave you here. It’s too dangerous and you can’t even
go anywhere on your own in this state.” He stated.
“Don’t worry about me. You can leave. Maybe the moon goddess
will find a way to keep me alive in this forest.” She said to him
but he disagreed.
An idea suddenly popped in his heart.
“I think I have the perfect plan.” He announced it to her.
Chapter 26
“Which is?” She asked, weakly.
“By the time we’re out of the forest, it will be totally dark. I’ll
sneak you into my pack and keep you in my house until I’m able to speak to someone to accept you into our pack.” He explained
to her.
“Is that possible?” She asked him.
“Of course.” He answered, not completely sure if it was going to
be possible.
“Are you sure?” She asked him and he furrowed his forehead.
“I think it is.” He answered and as she was about to protest, he
said again, “Don’t worry, we’ll find a way around this. It will
work out. Be positive, remember.” He assured her.
Deep down he wasn’t sure if it was going to be possible because
he knew the rules that guided the pack, ‘anyone, no matter who
it was, who brought in a stranger into the pack without the
permission of the Alpha or someone of authority, would be
punished and the stranger would be sent away or locked up
immediately‘, so he knew that he was making a very dangerous
decision, but he was willing to try his best to ensure that
Veronica got the help she needed and was not stuck and left for
dead in the forest.
Chapter 26
“Come let’s go.” He stretched his hand to her and as she grabbed him, he carried her, shocking her, and began to walk away.
“What… What are you doing?” She asked him, surprised that he
carried her.
“Carrying you. Isn’t it obvious?” He replied, rolling his eyes at
her.
“But I can walk.” She protested.
“I doubt you can. In fact, with how hard it is for you to walk
right now, and how weak you are at the moment, if you are left
to walk in this state, we won’t be able to leave this forest even in
three days. I’m sure you know that.” He stated and she
immediately kept calm as she began to hold in her pain.
**FIRE DAWN PACK**:
~AT THE HOSPITAL ~
Beta Richard and Lily remained by their son’s side throughout
the day and watched as he was still on the bed, not moving.
Aside from the beeping sounds of the monitors attached to his
body, the room was as silent as a graveyard.
They had earlier raised their concerns to the doctor about the
fact that he had been in that state since they got to the hospital,
yet he wasn’t awake yet, but the doctor had assured them that
Chapter 26
he was perfectly fine and they only need to be patient and wait
for him to wake up on his own.
“It’s almost nightfall, do you think we should alert the doctors of
his condition again? I’m getting scared, because why is he not
waking up?” Beta Lily whispered to her husband.
“I think we should just be patient just as the doctor advised. He is fine and will wake up soon, I’m sure.” He assured her, placing his
hand on her shoulder.
“OH NO!! VEE!!!!” Scott suddenly screamed Veronica’s name from his sleep.
