Chapter 17
Edmund’s first instinct was to rush over to Nyasia and pull her
away.
Meanwhile, Kaneeta stood in place motionlessly.
She knew she should’ve leapt aside, but the unfolding scene
petrified her. The scene of the car accident two years ago
flashed across her mind, and she couldn’t move at all.
“Neeta!” Edmund’s panicked scream cut through the air.
In that split second, a man rushed over and yanked her into his
arms so violently that she felt the whoosh of air against her
cheeks.
He gripped her so hard that she could almost feel his fingers
digging into her bone. With a sharp tug, he staggered backward,
barely dodging the truck.
The screams of the onlookers rang out as the truck finally
screeched to a halt before it hit the hospital building.
The driver stumbled out and apologized incoherently, “I’m… SO
sorry. I didn’t know… The brakes, they… I’m sorry…”

But Kaneeta could no longer hear him. The memory of that car
crash crashed over her again, and all she could see was twisted
metal, shattered glass, and blood.
It hurt so much….
She lost her leg and could never dance again.
Looking up at the sky, she seemed to see her mother’s smiling face. Would her mother be disappointed to know she could never dance again?
“Ms. Drayton? Ms. Drayton?”
An anxious voice snapped her out of it, and she turned around,
her face pale. In the next second, Woodrow’s face came into her view.
It was him…
Her mind was still a mess. She wanted to thank him, but couldn’t utter a word at all. Her lips kept trembling violently.
Woodrow frowned, and for the first time, a trace of panic flashed in his eyes.
“Are you OK? Ms. Drayton? Kaneeta!”
“Neeta!” Edmund rushed over. “Are you alright? Talk to me!”

Just then, an inexplicable chill ran down his spine.
He looked up and met Woodrow’s razor–sharp gaze.
What was Woodrow doing here?
Under Woodrow’s stern gaze, Edmund couldn’t help but feel
panicked. He could only try his best to appear calm and said,
“Thank you, Mr. Hartwell, for saving Neeta. She seems pretty
shaken. I’ll take her from here.”
With that, he reached out, wanting to pull Kaneeta back.
Yet Woodrow clutched his wrist before he could do so.
Woodrow used so much strength that he was in great pain, his
face twisting.
“Mr. Hartwell, what’s this supposed to mean?”
“Scram.”
Woodrow’s tone was more dangerous than ever. He then
shoved Edmund away like the latter was nothing but filthy
garbage.
After that, he picked Kaneeta up and walked into the hospital.
Behind him, Edmund’s pupils shrank violently. Kaneeta

belonged to him. How could Woodrow hold her in his arms like
this?!
“Woodrow, put her down!”
He wanted to chase after Woodrow, but Nyasia grabbed his
sleeve.
“Ed, are you gonna leave me alone here?” Her eyes reddened, brimming with tears. “I… I’m so terrified. The truck rushed toward us like that… And I think my wrist is hurting again. Don’t go. Stay with me, alright?”
“But… Nya…”
Glaring at Woodrow’s retreating figure, Edmund gritted his teeth.
“Ms. Drayton will be fine. She wasn’t hurt, was she?” Nyasia sobbed. “Ed, she snatched away my project, and I’m already devastated enough. If you leave me, I might do something impulsive again…”
“No, Nya.” He quickly held her in his arms. “I’ll stay with you, OK? Don’t do anything stupid.”
He thought, “Nya’s right. Kaneeta wasn’t injured. She was startled, at most. She’ll be fine in a minute.

“Besides, she loves me so much. Woodrow took her to leave,
yeah, but so what? She’ll never fall for him.”
Woodrow came back to the ward with Kaneeta in his arms,
leaving his subordinates stunned at the sight.
