Chapter 9
Maryanne was dead–driven to her grave by Sophia.
The king was devastated. No matter what had happened, Maryanne was still his sister. In his grief and fury, he stripped Sophia of her royal title and sentenced her to a forced abortion followed by execution.
“A woman so shameless and immoral is unworthy of being a princess of the royal family!”
As for Leopold, he was dismissed from his position as Chancellor, banned for life from ever entering the royal castle again. His political
career was completely shattered.
Alice, who had been defiled by Leopold and lost her chastity, was given to him in marriage by my arrangement.
“Miss, please don’t! We grew up together. We’re like sisters–how can you bear to throw me into the fire like this?”
Upon returning to the castle, Alice knelt before me, sobbing with snot and tears, banging her head on the floor in a desperate plea.
But I felt nothing as I looked at her bloodied forehead.
I had once begged her too- to spare me, to spare my unborn children.
- 20.
Yet she had handed my babies over to Sophia without a shred of hesitation, allowing her to crush them to death. She had drugged my food with abortifacients, helped Leopold abuse me—and did she once consider that we had grown up together like sisters?
“Alice, you’ve lost your purity. If you don’t marry Leopold, what decent man would ever take you?”
I smiled as I said it, watching her with mocking amusement.
Perhaps it was my smile that finally pushed her over the edge. Alice collapsed in a fit of hysterical sobbing.
“Why wasn’t it you?! That night–it was supposed to be you!”
“I drugged your handkerchief–I made sure you’d get heated and reckless and lose your virtue! Why
Watching her unravel, the smile on my face only deepened.

Alice slumped to the ground, speechless, her face frozen in despair.
.
Leopold had been beaten severely. The royal guards, feeling sympathy for General Courcy, had shown him no mercy. His legs were broken, and without tirely treatment, he was now crippled and confined to a wheelchair.
Word had it that some guards had taken special care to destroy his manhood. He was now impotent.
Married to a disgraced, disabled man with no future–Alice’s life was all but ruined. But it was her own doing. Hadn’t she once claimed
I was holding her back from high society? Well then–I was feeling generous and decided to help her achieve it!
On the day Alice married, the people of Caerwynd looked at me with nothing but sympathy. In their eyes, I was the most innocent party in the entire scandal.
“Miss Thorne, what a terrible ordeal you’ve endured…”
“A fine young lady, dragged into such filth through no fault of her own… what a tragedy.”
I had merely stumbled upon Sophia and Leopold’s affair, sullied my eyes with their filth, received a beating, and lost my personal maid in the process. Though none of it was directly my fault, being caught up in such disgrace inevitably damaged my reputation and future prospects for marriage.
I dabbed at the corners of my eyes with a handkerchief. “Oh, I’m not worried about myself… It’s poor Alice I pity.”
The crowd marveled at my kindness, praising my compassion toward a servant. It was clear to them that the whole mess was the doing

of those two shameless wretches–Sophia and Leopold.
I secretly watched as Sophia was led to the scaffold.
A guard brought a vial of abortive medicine, forced her mouth open, and poured it down her throat.
Sophia thrashed wildly, crying in terror. There was nothing left of the arrogant princess she once was.
