Chapter 6
“Who do you think you are? You dare dream of marrying my daughter?”
“I’d rather see her on the executioner’s block than let her marry a filthy commoner like you!”
Maryanne ordered Leopold dragged out for execution.
He was pinned to the ground by royal guards and hauled away like a naked dog, kicking and screaming.
“No! Maryanne! Sophia, save me!”
“Mother!” Sophia sobbed uncontrollably, snot and tears running down her face. She clutched at Maryanne’s skirt. “Please don’t kill
him! If Leopold dies, I’ll leave this house and become a nun!”
Maryanne could take no more. The emotional onslaught overwhelmed her, and she collapsed in a dead faint.
No sooner had General Courcy left the Clair estate than the scandal spread like wildfire across the streets of Caerwynd.
Everyone was talking about it—how Chancellor Leopold and Princess Sophia had engaged in public indecency, even forcing the maid of House Thorne to join in.
“I heard the princess goes both ways–dragged the maid into bed with her too!”
The king was furious and ordered a full investigation. Answers were to be delivered before the day was out.
“Turn Clair estate upside down if you must. I want the truth–who dared frame the Chancellor and Princess Sophia!”
Court officials and physicians rushed to the scene.
But as the investigation progressed, the chief inspector’s expression grew more and more peculiar.
He hesitated, glancing at the now–awake Maryanne, unsure if he should report his findings.
“Out with it!” she snapped, her face like thunder. “What are you mumbling for?”
“Yes, ma’am…” The inspector bowed his head and finally spoke. “The drug in Chancellor Leopold’s wine or in ph
Princess Sophia’s personal maid, Ashley.”
At his words, the entire room fell into uneasy silence.
The servants exchanged awkward glances. A lowly maid wouldn’t dare drug a Chancellor unless she
herself, most likely.
“Ashley! Why would you do this to me?!”
Now dressed, Sophia flew at her maid, clawing at her in a fit of rage.
Ashley was utterly dumbfounded.

Sophia had always been arrogant, often bullying both men and women. Ashley assumed this was just another one of her games.
How was she supposed to know it was a drug that would stir desire and cloud reason?
“Your Highness, you said…” Ashley stared at her in a daze, but before she could finish, Sophia cut her off.
“Ashley, think carefully before you speak!”
Sophia glared at her viciously. “Don’t forget–your parents are still working for me!”
A blatant threat.
The room was filled with noble ladies of Caerwynd. No one there was foolish.

They all knew perfectly well who had truly ordered the drugging.
Maryanne looked like a strangled rooster. Her old face flushed deep red, and she nearly passed out again.
“You shameless wretch!”
She finally snapped and slapped Sophia across the face.
The blow sent Sophia reeling, and she collapsed to the floor. Blood seeped through the hem of her freshly changed dress.
“Blood?!”
The ladies around gasped in unison.
Bright red, and flowing from below–it was unmistakably a miscarriage.
But the princess was unmarried. She had only been defiled by Leopold today. So how could she possibly be miscarrying now?
Unless… she had already been pregnant.
