Chapter 10
“No! I don’t want to die! Let me see my uncle!”
She knelt on the ground like a dying dog, clutching at the guard’s trouser, weeping pitifully.
The medicine worked quickly. Within moments, a bloody, mangled fetus slid out from beneath her, but she had no time to care–she was too busy begging for mercy from the very guards she had once looked down on.
A senior guard kicked her aside. “The king said it himself–you killed Maryanne. You sent his sister to her grave. Now go atone for it in hell!”
“Take Sophia to the guillotine!”
A group of guards grabbed her by the arms and dragged her up. The blade fell.
Crimson sprayed across the wooden platform.
“Charlotte…”
As I stepped out of a jewelry shop, I found myself face to face with Leopold.
He had no money for a proper wheelchair, leaning instead on two crooked branches as makeshift crutches, hobbling toward me.
His eyes were full of regret and desperate longing

“I know you’ve returned too,” he said, his voice shaking. He reached out to grab my sleeve.
“It was my fault… I thought you’d drugged me, tricked me into marriage, and that’s why I blamed child…”

I sidestepped him, letting out a soft, mirthless laugh. “Chancellor, you were always a clever man. Don’t tell me you still don’t understand?”
“You and Sophia were already lovers. That night, I just happened to stumble in and became her scapegoat.”
“You hated me not because I harmed you, but because I interrupted your rise to power through Princess Maryanne. Even though my father gave everything to support your career- -it was never enough for you!”

His disfigured face twisted with shame. Because I had dodged him, he lost balance and stumbled to the ground.
“But Charlotte, we were once husband and wife. We had children together…”
I cut him off coldly. “Don’t you dare mention children. You’re not worthy.”
“You murdered them–one after another. In this life and the last, you will never have a child of your own.”
“The Beaumont bloodline ends with you. When you die, let’s see how you face your ancestors.”
Still trying to plead with me, Leopold moved closer, but suddenly he was kicked down again.
A royal guard had passed by–none other than General Courcy. When he saw Leopold harassing me, he gave him a hard kick and sent him sprawling.
“Are you alright?” General Courcy asked, his eyes firm and upright.
From that moment, Lucian Courcy and I grew closer. Not long ago, he had formally proposed to my parents.
The wedding preparations kept me busy day and night, and I had heard little of Leopold or Alice.
It wasn’t until I sat in the bridal sedan that word finally reached me.
Alice had stolen what little fortune Leopold had left and vanished–she was now a fugitive.
As for Leopold, crippled and penniless, he starved to death in bed. By the time someone found him, maggots had already begun

devouring his corpse.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please rise for the entrance of the bride!”
The emcee’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
“Do you, Lucian Courcy, take this woman as your wife…”
“Yes. I will.”
Those who had wronged me in the past had all met their just ends. Now, it was time for me to begin a new life.
“You may now kiss your bride.”
