Chapter 23 A Crying Woman
Outside room 6088, a woman in a bright pink off–shoulder dress stood nervously, her face full of unease.
She took a deep breath, raised her hand, and gently knocked on the door.
After two knocks with no response, she felt a little discouraged but wasn’t ready to give up.
Just as she was about to knock a third time, the door opened from the inside.
The man who opened the door didn’t immediately recognize who was standing outside. His voice was cold and clipped. “Don’t you have a room key?”
Mamie was startled by his sharp tone. Remembering the reason she was here, she forced herself to calm down.
The man had just come out of the bathroom, wrapped in a towel, with water droplets still clinging to his damp hair.
Her face flushed suddenly, and she stammered, “Mr…. Mr. Mason, my name is Mamie. I’m here to…”

Hearing the unfamiliar voice, Jackson paused, turned around, and glanced at the woman standing in the doorway. His brow furrowed. “What do you want?”
Mamie’s heart raced under his icy gaze. She quickly lowered her eyes, unable to meet his, her hands nervously tugging at the fabric of her dress.
“Mr. Mason, I’m here to apologize.”
Jackson’s gaze remained cool and detached, his expression unreadable.
“You’ve already apologized. You can leave now.”
He walked past her, casually drying his hair with a towel.
Mamie hesitated, not leaving right away. Instead, she glanced up at him, quietly studying him from behind.
With his back to the door, she couldn’t help but notice the smooth, exposed line of his bare back. Her heart skipped a beat.
Taking a deep breath, she stepped forward, moving further into the room. Her figure was elegantly outlined by the corset–style gown she wore, the skirt flowing from the waist, accentuating her slender frame.
“Mr. Mason, my father is Omer. I…”

“Why are you still here?” Jackson interrupted, his voice suddenly sharp.
Mamie froze, then, feeling humbled, she lowered herself into a deep bow, her tone sincere. “Mr. Mason, I’m truly sorry about today. I’ll take your clothes to the dry cleaners, and consider it my apology. Will that be alright?”
Jackson didn’t respond, walking past her without a glance. She lingered at the door for a moment, but after a brief hesitation, she quietly left.
The elevator doors dinged open, and Elaine stopped in her tracks when she saw Mamie standing outside.
Her eyes were red, as if she had been crying or upset.
Elaine remembered that Mamie was the one who had spilled champagne on Jackson’s clothes. Out of politeness, she offered a small smile before stepping out of the elevator.
She had taken only a few steps when Mamie called out to her. “Ms. Valentine.”
Elaine turned, surprised, not recognizing Mamie. She didn’t know who she was or which family she came from. “Is there something you need?”
Mamie glanced at the paper bag in Elaine’s hand, and from the open top, she could see the men’s clothes inside.

Elaine nodded. Mamie stepped closer, grabbing her hand and looking at her with an eager expression.
Confused by the gesture, Elaine blinked. She wasn’t comfortable with physical contact, especially with strangers, including women.
Without hesitation, she pulled her hand away. “If you have something to say, just say it. I’m not in a rush.”
Mamie’s face showed a flicker of awkwardness, but it quickly faded as she smiled.
“Ms. Valentine, I’m Mamie. My father is Omer from Howard Group.”
Elaine didn’t respond, waiting for her to continue.
Mamie had expected Elaine to ask her what she wanted, but after a minute of silence, Elaine didn’t say anything. The quiet stretched on, and Mamie began to feel a little embarrassed.
