Chapter 11 Not for Money
Cordell stared at her, as if he had something to say. His lips moved, but in the end, no words came out.
Her gaze brushed past him, and with light, graceful steps, she made her way out of the living room, the sound of her high heels tapping softly on the floor.
Once in the car, Rubin asked where she was headed. She told him she was going to a department store near the hotel.
When they arrived at the mall, she opened the car door, got out, and before closing it, said, “Rubin, you can head back now. I might be a while.”
“It’s fine, I’ll wait in the car,” Rubin said, showing no sign of impatience.
His unwavering professionalism made her a little uneasy. She couldn’t just walk into the hotel right in front of him, could she?
After thinking it over, she decided to go into the mall first. She asked a staff member for directions to the back door, then headed straight for
the hotel once she was outside.
Standing in front of the hotel, she raised her hand to knock, but the

door was ajar. She pushed it open and stepped inside.
Jackson was standing by the window, speaking on the phone. The curtains were wide open, revealing the neon–lit, bustling nightlife outside.

When he heard her footsteps, Jackson turned around, glanced at her briefly, then turned back to his conversation. He was speaking in Anora, a language Elaine didn’t understand. She sat down on the couch and started browsing entertainment news on her phone.
A moment later, a shadow fell over her. She looked up to see Jackson towering over her, his gaze sharp and intense, making her feel a sudden chill.
‘What’s going on with him?‘
Though confused, she didn’t dare to ask. Instead, she said, “I’m going to take a shower.”
As soon as she stood, Jackson suddenly moved forward. Her forehead collided with his chest, and she stumbled back onto the sofa.
Rubbing her forehead, she stared at him in a daze as his long fingers gripped her chin. “The Valentine family is about to collapse?”
She froze. “What?”

Jackson’s deep, dark eyes held a cold, calculating look, and his lips curled into a cruel smirk. “Did your father send you to my bed?”
She blinked, utterly confused. With her head tilted back slightly, the light from the crystal chandelier reflected in her pure black eyes, making them look even clearer and more innocent.
Jackson’s handsome face showed signs of impatience. “The Valentine family’s daughter is short on money?”
Cyrus’s investigation had made it clear that, although Elaine wasn’t favored by her family, she never lacked pocket money. Her life was far from financially strained.
Only then did Elaine realize what he was implying. She blinked, her clear, bright eyes filled with innocent confusion. “I never said it was about money.”
Jackson frowned, replaying the scene from that day. She hadn’t mentioned anything about money. Considering Elaine was the woman who had come to him on her own, he naturally assumed it was for financial reasons. “So, what is it for?”
Elaine stood up, resting her hand on his arm. Despite her seven–inch heels, he still towered over her by a full head, giving her an almost suffocating sense of pressure.
She stood on tiptoe and kissed the edge of his finely shaped lips. “I told you it’s because you’re handsome. I like you. You should have more
confidence in yourself.”

Jackson’s dark eyes were like a cold, bottomless abyss, emotionless and distant. “It’s best if that’s the case. I don’t like women interfering with
work matters.”
She smiled brightly. “I understand.”
After showering, the air between them was thick with unease. It was the first time she felt unsettled in his presence, a lingering sense of fear hanging in the air.
Jackson looked down at the tense woman beneath him, his eyes as cold as ice. He turned away, his voice cold. “Don’t come back here again.”
