As her voice faded, the warehouse door opened.
“Alice is five minutes away
Actually, Alice had hacked into the warehouse system, ruled out every other spot, and was zeroing in on Emma’s location.
She’d eliminated all other possibilities and was rushing here now.
The woman glanced at her pricey watch.
“Not bad–almost 20 minutes earlier than I expected.”
“Should we let her in?” her assistant asked.
The woman nodded. “Give Emma our medicine.”
“Okay!”
Emma stayed silent but was forced to swallow a pill despite the pain.
“This is special stuff, the woman sneered. “I’m waiting for Alice to beg me.
Then, looking at her men, she said, “Game’s over. Let’s move.”
She left through another door with a few bodyguards.
Almost immediately after she left, the warehouse door was kicked open.
Alice stood in the doorway, fierce and unstoppable.
Emma cried with joy, “Ms. Spencer!”
Her voice choked with emotion.
Even after all the torture, she hadn’t cried–until now, when tears poured like a flood.
Alice scanned the warehouse and went to untie her.
Emma pointed toward a wall.
“There’s a secret door here. They escaped”

They went through all that trouble just to show me Emma’s suffering?

Emma’s voice grew weaker. “It’s nothing serious. I haven’t been healthy lately and have been catching colds. Some medicine
will fix it.
Alice let go.
“You have a slow–acting poison inside you.”
Emma froze, slowly realizing Alice meant the pill she’d just swallowed.
Alice pressed her lips tight. “A foreign lab just made it, and they don’t even know all its effects yet.”
In other words, it might not be curable.
Emma paled, but she quickly pulled herself together. “Ms. Spencer, I’m okay now. I’m content with life. I-
“If there’s no antidote, you’ve got three months to live.”
Alice cut her off
Emma trembled. “Ms. Spencer
“They’re forcing me!” Alice clenched her fists, eyes burning with age.
Emma had been sad thinking she was dying.
After all, she’d just gotten through her father’s recovery, hoping for a happy family life.
But this was a shock out of nowhere.
Alice’s words snapped her back to reality.
She grabbed Alice’s wrist tight.
“Ms. Spencer, I know you’re a good person.”
Tears ran down her face, but her voice was steady.
“So I won’t drag you down with me.
Alice was caught off guard.
She thought Emma might guilt her–using ‘you’re a good person‘ to demand the antidote.
Emma kept crying.
“I used to pray to God, hoping my dad would get better.

“I even promised God that if my dad recovered. I’d be willing to die right away.
“At least it’s not happening immediately. I still have three months. I’m already grateful.”
