Chapter 58 You Didn’t Have To
Alice nodded. “I guarantee three hours is plenty.”
Peter wasn’t totally sure what she really meant.
He just let out a breath of relief.
Originally, that emerald was worth only tens of thousands, but he’d paid three million.
That hurt a bit.
Still, helping that person made him feel oddly satisfied.
His feelings were a weird mix he couldn’t quite explain.
He confirmed the time to check the account books with Alice, then left with the emerald heart pendant.
Daniel looked confused.
“Mrs. Nolan, why did you give that to him? Now that it’s gone, you don’t have any leverage.”
Alice waved her hand.
“You must wonder why this emerald is so valuable.
“Sure, gold has a price, but emerald is priceless!”
Daniel knew emeralds had been hyped up to crazy prices lately.
Alice smiled coldly. “No how great an emerald is, it’s still just a rock. It can’t work as a global currency.
“So compared to that, gold’s still the better bet.
“But even emeralds expire.”
She looked Daniel straight in the eyes, serious.
“You probably haven’t thought this through. After tonight, that heart pendant will be
worthless.”
Daniel froze.
He thought it over carefully.

This was all part of Alice’s plan.
She got the heart pendant back from the auction, giving the people from the old mansion a lesson.
Then she set a deadline.
That deadline was no later than tonight.
Peter, the auction house manager, showed up, breaking the auction’s mysterious vibe.
All because Alice had given them a tight deadline.
Daniel suddenly got it.
“So, Mrs. Nolan, you used the emerald heart pendant to get into the safe’s account books.
“And before dawn, someone from the old mansion will deliver the pendant to you.”
Alice smiled. “Bingo!”
Daniel felt like his brain was about to overheat.
Alice had pulled a clever move and made three million in pure profit.
This wasn’t just a cash cow–it was practically a money–printing machine.
Even if three million was nothing to Eric, Alice had made that much in a day.
At this rate, she could soon cover the entire mansion in cash.
Though Daniel was a loyal Eric fan, he was aware of the truth.
Since waking up, Eric seemed to hit wall after wall.
Now he was running the design department but still hadn’t gotten a grip on it.
Tomorrow was Monday, and people would be coming over.
Eric might just become the joke of the company.
Compared to that, Alice was clearly on another level.
Watching Daniel’s face change so quickly, Alice felt like his brain was rev
ng fast
Suddenly, Daniel grinned like he was meeting his hero.

Alice frowned.
Eric looked totally disgusted. “You can clock out now.”
Daniel froze.
Can’t I have a chat with my idol for a few more minutes?
Then he caught Eric’s deadly glare.

His heart jumped, and he spun around, running away as fast as possible, afraid he’d get silenced if he stayed any longer.
Late at night, Peter arrived at the old mansion carrying a package..
Ruby opened the door.
Tonight, instead of her usual strong look, she wore a flowy white dress.
The dress showed off her figure perfectly.
Her makeup was light and fresh–more like a college girl’s style.
Thanks to years of good care, she still looked quite young.
And with the night’s lighting, she looked like she’d stepped right back into her youth.
Peter was stunned.
Ruby smiled softly and took the box from him.
“Thank you.”
Her voice was gentle.
It sounded like it had been polished over time.
She sounded like a college girl
“I–it’s nothing.”
Peter suddenly got nervous.
He even stuttered a little.

Under the streetlight, his face flushed–he looked shy.
Ruby smiled faintly.
“You didn’t have to show who you really are.”
She sighed softly as she spoke.
Her voice sounded like a bird’s singing, drumming on Peter’s heart.
His heart jolted hard again.
“Don’t feel guilty.”
His voice got louder than he meant.
As soon as he spoke, he realized he’d lost his cool.
He quickly looked away, pretending nothing happened.
Ruby’s smile deepened, but it faded just as fast.
When Peter glanced back, her face was full of sadness.
“It’s Sandy’s fault for being so careless.
