Chapter 48 The Vegetable Is Awake
Chapter 48 The Vegetable Is Awake
The bidding for the third box of ink started to slow down.
People were thinking about whether one ink was really worth giving up better stuff they could buy.
So, with all the hesitation, the third ink sold for only 15 million.
When Linda heard that, she jumped up, furious.
She almost stormed the stage to argue with the auctioneer.
But she knew she couldn’t lose her cool like that.
In the end, she swallowed her anger and pretended to go to the bathroom to calm down.
Alice watched her rush away, then waved at Daniel.
“I’m stepping out for a bit. Keep an eye on Mr. Eric.”
aniel nodded seriously. “Mrs. Nolan, don’t you want me to protect you?”
Alice smiled gently. “It’s safer here than you think.”
That was true. Given the auction’s secrecy, the money involved, and the important guests, security was super tight.
Only someone desperate would dare cause trouble here.
When Alice got to the restroom, she heard crashing sounds.
Peeking inside, she saw Linda angrily smashing her makeup.
Thinking no one was there, Linda cursed loudly.
“Damn it! The auction house tricked us!
“There’s definitely something shady going on!
“This is so frustrating!”
Alice guessed why Linda was mad.

Linda wasn’t upset just because the auction price dropped.
She was mad because she had insisted on spending 70 million of the Spencers‘ money.
When Charlie agreed to the marriage alliance, knowing Eric was in a coma and might die soon. it only cost 50 million.
Seventy million was a big jump.
Linda is probably wondering what the Spencer brothers think about her
Alice walked over and deliberately turned on the faucet.
The sound of running water stopped Linda’s smashing right away.
A moment later. Linda hurried out.
She glanced at Alice and thought she looked familiar.
But since both were masked, she couldn’t be sure.
Linda gave Alice an awkward smile and then left.
now.
Alice, done with the drama, was about to leave when she overheard voices–Gary’s and Charlie’s.
She didn’t really want to listen, but she figured hearing their argument would definitely be satisfying.
So she stayed.
Gary sighed.
“Do we even left?”

Charlie sounded frustrated.
“If the Nolans hadn’t taken that 50 million, we might be okay. But now, I’m not sure…
Gary leaned against the wall, the cold surface sobering him a bit.
“Hey, don’t tell Damon about this.”
Charlie stayed quiet.

After a moment, Gary asked, “What if we don’t trade the Imperius Ink for the Twelve Muses? Do you think that would be okay?”
Charlie was silent for a long time.
“Gary, are you regretting it?”
The hallway went totally quiet.
After a while, Gary answered, “No.”
He took a deep breath.
“Linda grew up with us. I can’t just watch her marry a vegetable.”
Charlie sneered, “But now, the vegetable is awake.”
Their words hung heavy in the air as silence fell again.
Alice suddenly felt sick.
She lost interest in listening anymore.
When Eric was in a coma, the Spencers spared no expense or pride to keep Linda comfortable.
Now that he was awake–and with Eric’s dad, Oscar, conscious too–the Nolans were ready to make a comeback.
Eric would become a hot ticket.
Of course, they wanted Linda to be his wife.
In other words, they wanted to give Linda the very best.
And they were willing to sacrifice anyone for that.
Charlie spoke up again.
“Gary, maybe we should try to negotiate with the Nolans.”
Gary’s voice turned sour. “The Nolans aren’t stupid.”
Charlie said, “After the auction, let’s invite Alice to dinner.”

Gary agreed. “Sure. Better if Mr. Eric comes too.”
“That’s not guaranteed, but if he does, we’ll make plans.”
Only those two knew what kind of plans.

Alice stood there a little longer after they finished talking, then slowly walked away.
The auction had moved on through many items.
By the time she reached the second floor, they were auctioning a rare herb called Snakebite Root.
Even from far away, she could tell the herb’s quality.
If I have to rate it….
“Seventy points,” Alice said quietly.
Daniel looked confused. “Mrs. Nolan, what did you say?”
