Chapter 133 Deals and Desperation
Chapter 133 Deals and Desperation
“She’s still young. Right now’s the best time for Alice to be racing
“The last time she competed, she basically made a name for herself overnight”
“If they play the cards right, the whole racing scene might end up dominated by the Spencers”
“Mom, I really don’t think the Spencers are willing to let Alice go to jail”
Irene scoffed, her eyes narrowing in satisfaction.
“Well, look what fate just handed us on a silver platter.”
She turned to her sons and daughters–in–law.
“Go talk to Scott from the Spencers. Tell him I’m still unconscious. As for what happens to Alice that depends on how much the Spencers are willing to offer.”
Cheryl understood exactly what she meant.
Right now, they were stuck. Eric had backed them into a corner,
But if the Spencers could pressure Eric into giving back control of the fashion department and maybe even get him to apologize to Irene, then maybe Alice getting arrested wouldn’t be such a waste after all.
“Don’t worry, Mom. Cheryl said. Til talk to him myself
But Josh wasn’t too happy about Cheryl trying to grab all the credit.
“I think we should loop in the other Spencers too, one of them said. From what I’ve heard, the eldest son is currently organizing a huge international chess tournament. The world’s top players are flying in for it
Irene’s eyes lit up.
In both domestic and international business circles, many companies would host recreational events alongside their core operations.
Annual competitions were a common occurrence,
Chess, being such a classic tradition, had naturally become one of the more prestigious ones.
At first, it was just a hobbyist gathering.
But now, it had become an annual opportunity for big–name CEOs to meet, talk partnerships, and map out business strategies.
The event itself didn’t generate revenue, but the connections built during the tournament? Invaluable.
Sometimes, just a conversation during intermission could lead to major investments or collaborations.
The tournament was usually hosted our of town.
But this year, because Gary had taken first place last time, it was being held right here in Mapleford, and the Spencers were in charge of the guest list
“Good, Irene said. “We need VIP passes to the tournament. Both of your families are going.”
She said exactly what everyone had been thinking
Since Eric had taken the official company seal and likely wasn’t giving the fashion department back, they needed a new way forward.

If they could secure solid business partnerships at the chess tournament, they wouldn’t have to rely on Ruby and Nolan Group anymore.
No more begging. No more playing nice with Jimmy.
“Mom, you’re brilliant, Cheryl said, giving her a thumbs–up.
Josh seemed to have an idea too. He narrowed his eyes, the smirk on his face growing wider.
Meanwhile, Scott was waiting just outside the door. When the Nolans finally came out, he greeted them warmly.
He was here on Alice’s behalf, hoping they’d give her another chance.
Cheryl didn’t waste time. She laid it all out.
Scott sighed quietly. “I can’t make that call. I’ll have to talk to Gary,”
Cheryl’s tone cooled, laced with pressure. “We’ve got time. But Alice doesn’t.”
Josh added with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes, “Honestly, it’s not a big deal. She’s just a girl from the sticks. No need to act like she’s irreplaceable.”
Scott frowned.
“No matter what, Alice’s still a Spencer”
Cheryl, seeing how firm he was being, actually looked even more pleased
“Alright then,” she said. “Call Gary. We’ll wait.
Scott stepped aside and went to the stairwell, pulling out his phone to call Gary.
Gary had been busy with the chess tournament.
He sounded exhausted when he picked up.
“What’s up?”
“Cary, Alice just got arrested.”
Gary’s voice sharpened immediately. “What happened?”
Scout gave him a quick rundown, then explained what Irene wanted.
There was a long pause,
Scout didn’t push. He knew this wouldn’t be easy.
This tournament was Cary’s pride and joy.
No one understood how hard he’d worked on it more than Scott did.
Sure, Nolan Group already had their own tickets. But Irene’s request wasn’t about that.
She wanted Matt and Josh to attend independently as separate VIPs, essentially putting them on the same level as Nolan Group itself.
Even if Gary agreed, it would send the wrong message. If the other sponsors caught wind, they’d say the Spencers didn’t respect boundaries.
Sure, Scott’s side might benefit. But the Spencers would be toast in the future. They’d never be able to host an event like this.

Trading the family’s long–term reputation for Alice?
That was asking too much.
“Gary..maybe think about it for now, Scott offered. Til try to negotiate with the Nolans again.”
Gary sounded even more drained than before.
“Til call a friend over at the police station and see what I can find out.”
Scott’s heart sank.
All he could do was sigh
That was a no.
But still, Gary had connections. If there was any way to reduce her sentence or work something out behind the scenes, he’d
That was probably all he could do now–for old times‘ sake.
