Oriana is practically bursting with anticipation as she hits play on her phone.
I flinch at the unmistakable sounds of intimacy flooding the space. Roderic Riven’s deep voice is
unmistakable, even with the audio glitches.
“Oriana! Turn it down!” I hiss, glancing worriedly at my apartment door, fearing an interruption at any
moment.
She obliges, but her eyes sparkle with mischief. “Just listen to the Alpha’s powerful growl,” she remarks with a sly smile. “A stark contrast to his son’s supposed performance issues, wouldn’t you
agree?”
Heat rushes to my cheeks. “That’s not a topic I want to delve into.”
“Come on,” Oriana urges, leaning in closer. “I’m just curious. Despite his shortcomings, he is an Alpha.
Was he at least capable of satisfying his Luna?”
Her wolf’s curiosity is tangible, and I know she won’t drop it easily.
“Oriana…” I caution, but memories start to surface against my will.
The last time Alarion and I were close had been nearly three months ago, right before everything crashed down. I recall the fire in his amber gaze as he led me to our den, his commanding Alpha scent
wrapping around me.
For hours, he had been attentive and passionate, seemingly devoted. His wolf had howled with pleasure while mine purred contentedly beneath him. By the time we emerged, dawn was breaking.
“He was attentive,” I confess reluctantly.
“That good, huh?” Oriana raises her eyebrows suggestively.
What I refrain from sharing is how Alarion had arranged for his Beta to take me home afterward, stating he needed to join his pack for wolf–whiskey. At that moment, I thought nothing of it. Now, 1 ponder if he had already been involved with Cyrinne.
A wave of sorrow crashes over me. How can experiences of such profound connection coexist with
such cold indifference? My wolf whimpers softly at the memory.
Oriana’s expression softens as she notices the change in my mood. “Hey, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to
stir up bad memories.”

I shake my head. “It’s okay. It’s just strange to think about it now.”

Oriana swiftly shifts the topic. “Hey, I was curious if I could join you at that fancy werewolf event Daelor is organizing? You know, the one featuring all those prominent Alphas from the Northern
Territory?”
I appreciate the diversion. “I don’t see any reason to say no. Let me give Daelor a call and check-”
Before I can finish my sentence, my mobile phone rings, Daelor’s name lighting up the screen.
“Hello?” I respond, casting a surprised glance at Oriana.
“Aelira.” His deep voice sends a surprising shiver through me. “I wanted to inform you that the event has been rescheduled for tonight.”
“Tonight?” I repeat, looking at Oriana, who leans in closer, eager to listen in.
“I’ll have a dress sent over within the hour,” he goes on. “I noticed you’ve been showing a bit more, so I took the liberty of picking out something in a larger size.”
I instinctively rest a hand on my growing belly. At almost three months along, my pregnancy is becoming evident, especially to other wolves with their heightened senses.
“Thank you,” I respond, moved by his kindness. “Actually, Oriana just asked if she could join us.”
“Absolutely, she can come,” he replies easily. “The more allies present, the better. I’ll make sure to send something for her as well.”
After expressing my gratitude once more, I end the call and face Oriana. “You’re officially invited.”
She squeals in excitement. “This is perfect! It’s my chance to connect with some major pack players. Do you realize how many potential business contacts will be there? My neutral zone commerce management might expand beyond Riverdale territory!”
I grin at her enthusiasm. “Just keep in mind that we’re supposed to support each other. This isn’t just a
chance to network.”
Her expression turns serious. “Of course. I’ve got your back, Aelira. Always.”
True to his word, Daelor sends over two garment bags within the hour. My bag contains an elegant
maternity dress in a rich aubergine shade that will drape beautifully over my slightly rounded belly.
Oriana’s is a stunning emerald that perfectly enhances her complexion.
“How did he know my size?” Oriana exclaims, holding the dress up against herself.
shrug. “He has his ways.”

By late afternoon, we are both dressed and ready. Oriana paces excitedly by the window while I sit on the couch, suddenly anxious about attending such a high–profile event with my pregnancy becoming
more apparent.
“There he is!” Oriana announces that Daelor’s luxury SUV with the Nightshade Pack emblem arrives
outside Myrthale Residences.
I stand, smoothing my dress nervously. The fabric feels soft against my sensitive skin, clearly chosen with a pregnant wolf’s comfort in mind.
When we reach the lobby, Daelor is waiting for us. His tailored black suit highlights his powerful Alpha
physique, and his silver–gray eyes visibly warm when they rest on me.
“You look pretty,” he says in a soft tone, his gaze appreciating my appearance.
“Not too obvious?” I inquire, gesturing to my barely noticeable bump.
“Perfect,” he assures me. He pulls out a delicate silver–infused shawl from his pocket. “This will help
filter the overwhelming scents at the gathering. Pregnant wolves can be sensitive to that.”
I accept it with gratitude, once more touched by his kindness. Alarion never took such details into
account.
“Thank you for including me,” Oriana says as Daelor helps us both into the SUV.
He nods politely. “Any friend of Aelira’s is welcome.”
The journey to the event is brief, yet it allows me some time to examine Daelor’s profile as he shares details about the gathering. Something about his defined jawline and intense concentration stirs my
wolf’s interest.
The event unfolds in an opulent indoor garden, meticulously crafted to please the senses of
werewolves. Natural stone paths meander between gently flowing water features and skillfully
nurtured moon–blooms, which only reveal their beauty in the company of werewolves.
Upon our entrance, numerous heads pivot towards us. I sense the weight of inquisitive stares, undoubtedly speculating about my relationship with the formidable Alpha of the Nightshade Pack.
We hardly make it inside when Dr. Nyven Leyric approaches, his expression taut.
“Daelor, we’ve got a problem,” he whispers. “My sister Sandra is getting into a fierce argument with
your cousin. It’s becoming quite intense.”
I recall our visit to the Nightshade Pack compound. “Is your cousin Mary?” I inquire of Daelor.
He nods, looking entirely unconcerned. “Let them argue. One down, one to go,” he says dismissively

before redirecting his focus back to me.
“One down?” I ask, puzzled by his indifferent demeanor.

“I’ll clarify later,” he replies, warmth flickering in his silver–gray eyes as they meet mine. “First, allow me to take you to the refreshment area. They’ve arranged several options that cater specifically to pregnant werewolves.”
Dr. Leyric raises an eyebrow but remains silent about Daelor’s disclosure regarding my condition.
Daelor leads me through the crowd, his hand providing a steady reassurance at the small of my back. Oriana spots someone she recognizes and diverges with a quick promise to find me later.
Just as we arrive at the refreshment table, a sharp voice pierces through the ambient chatter.
“Cousin! I must talk to you at once!”
I turn to see a young, attractive woman with striking gray eyes–clearly a Briarhallow–charging
towards us. Her long, dark hair is elaborately styled, and her designer attire shouts of pack privilege.
Mary Briarhallow approaches, her face flushed with anger. “That Leyric she–wolf is insufferable! She
deliberately spilled moon–wine on my new dress and then had the nerve to claim it was an accident!”
Daelor doesn’t even glance away from selecting a plate for me. “Perhaps it was unintentional.”
“It was not!” Mary retorts. “She’s been hostile ever since I-”
Her words cut off as her gaze finally fixes on me. Her posture becomes rigid, and her wolf’s scent
sharpens with animosity.
“Aelira Sunmere?” Her voice escalates with outrage. “What are you doing here?!”
